Signing Day!

Panther Players signing their letters of intent.

The official "Signing day" has come and gone as several senior players from the 2010 Greendale Panther varsity football team finally committed to play football next year at their respective college. After a season is over, college coaches and recruiters take to the streets in search of players for their sports programs. This involves a lot of phone calls, letters, interviews, and visits. Each player then has to make that very important decision on where they think they will fit in the best. While this can be somewhat stressful and time consuming at times, it eventually comes down to making that big decision, which is then followed up by a signature.

Some of those players are shown here. Starting from the left and going clockwise we have Noah Jankowski who will be attending Concordia University - St. Paul in Minnesota. Next to him is Andrew Brees who will be attending University of Minnesota - Duluth. Sitting at the head of the table is Jordan Campbell who will be attending Minnesota State - Mankato. Next to him is Ernie Valente who will be attending Robert Morris University located in Illinois. And sitting on the far right is James Wilson who will also be attending Minnesota State - Mankato with Jordan. All of these schools with the exception of Robert Morris University are NCAA Division 2 schools. Robert Morris University is a NAIA school. These players have received partial scholarships to play next year.

Other players that have made decisions to play football are Luke Drumel who was a two-year 1st team all-conference running back. He has committed to play at UW-Whitewater next year. Luke plans to gray shirt in 2011, and will work to prepare himself for the rigors of playing RB in the WIAC. UW-Whitewater has won three National Championships in the past three seasons. Luke will meet up with another former Panther, Joe Hansen (2009), as a prospective Warhawk.

In addition to Luke, fellow teammate and outside linebacker Matt Wanezek will attend St. Norbert's in Depere, WI. Like UW-Whitewater, SNU is a Division 3 team in the NCAA. St. Norbert's has won eight conference titles in the past eleven years and has earned playoff berths in seven of those years.

Congratulations gentlemen and best of luck to all of your future endeavors!

Back to Normal Once Again!
R. A. Mattrisch - 12/10/10

Rodney Mattrisch

Rodney Mattrisch - GPTC website manager

I have to be honest with everyone. The older I get, the faster time flies. I wait all winter, spring, and summer for the football season and then in a blink of an eye, it's over. At least this year proved to be another successful winning season for all of the teams involved.

The varsity finished 7-1 in the regular season, which was good enough to bring home another conference championship for the Woodland Black Division. This conference championship represents their 5th in 10 years. WOW! Batting .500 with conference championships... ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I remember way back in the day when winning a championship here in Greendale was like getting a BINGO in a room filled with 200 elderly women. You just didn't have much of a chance of winning most of the time. I do remember Greendale having a few dry spells in the past so that's why this seems so amazing to me now. The offense put up 356 points this year, which puts them in a tie for 2nd with the 2008 team for total points scored in a regular 9-game season. The defense only allowed 90 points, which puts them in 6th on the list of least amount of points surrendered during a regular 9-games season. One thing to mention about this year's defense is that they shut out 4 teams. That is very hard to do in today's day and age. I was surprised that they were bumped early in the playoffs this year. I'm not really sure what happened so I think I would need to look at the game film again. Oh yeah... there isn't one! Anyway, on paper Greendale looked better and was favored, but things happened and they ended up losing by 2 points against Pius. It was a shame because they would have been looking at South Milwaukee again who they shut out during the regular season 24-0. Then if things would have gone the right way there, they would have been looking at Franklin for a rematch from last year. The bottom line though is that Greendale does not seem to have a problem making the playoffs anymore. It will be very interesting to see if this trend continues.

Of course I will miss the seniors. I've been watching these guys play since the youth days. It always amazes me to see how each player progresses during the course of their playing days here in Greendale. I really enjoy getting to know them and interacting with them. I would like to think that we are friends even though I am twice their age... Oh wait, I meant to say 3-times their age. UGH! Never-the-less, I will miss all of them and hope nothing but the best for them as they move on in their lives! Hopefully they will still come back and say "HI".

The varsity reserve did it again too by going undefeated in conference with a record of 8-0-1. I'm not sure but they may have even won the conference at that level as well. They were so much fun to watch because you just never knew what was going to happen next. Most of you may not know how the varsity and varsity reserve teams practice during the season, but for the most part, they always practice together. Then when a varsity reserve game comes up, that particular group will get together for about an hour the night before the game and just go over a few things like who is going to play where. Come game time, it looks like they have been practicing together as a unit all year long. That's amazing! It's also a testament to the players for listening and working together not to mention the coaches who also seem to put a good product out on the field. The good thing is that these guys know what it feels like to win, but more importantly, what it takes to win. All I can say is that I don't think the team will miss a beat next year at all. The names will be different on the back of the jerseys but the high quality product will remain the same. All they need to do is work hard during the offseason so that they are bigger, faster, and stronger for the next season.

All said and done, the freshmen team did not do a bad job either. I will admit that after the first game, I thought it was going to be a long season for them. It was painful to watch in fact. All it took was a few changes, a little experience, and a little attitude adjustment and they turned it around real fast to finish 5-3 for the year. The potential is very high there. It will come down to taking care of things in the offseason to make them better overall. I am impressed on how they are able to grasp the type of complicated offense that Greendale runs. I can only credit the coaches on getting that done.

And lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Greendale's "A" team at the youth level. Its been 15 years since they won their last league championship but that finally changed this year. This one makes number 10 over a period of 34 years. They have actually been in the league since the inception, which happens to be 34 years ago. Congratulations to them and the entire youth program for an outstanding season this past year. Make no mistake about it; everyone knows that this is where the whole journey begins for our players in Greendale.

The GHS bannerBehind every solid and successful program, there is a group of mentors or leaders that do the teaching. These of course would be our coaches. First of all, you will not find a better group than what we have here. If you don't believe me, do some research and see how consistently successful they are year after year. This is a very grueling, time consuming and labor intensive job that requires a lot of endurance, patience not to mention the knowledge of the game. They all have various tasks and responsibilities that they do not take lightly. I have worn that whistle for 20 years so I know first hand what it takes and what these guys go through. These gentlemen spend a lot of time away from their loved ones just so they can pursue their passion of football. I always sit back and admire what they do, but even more than that, I admire their families and friends for standing behind their passion and not saying a thing other then those special words of encouragement and support. In case you don't know this, they don't do this for the money because at the end of the day, they are probably making less than minimum wage. They do it because they love to do it. This is why they are very special people in my book.

Of course there are many others to numerous to list that help make this "green machine" run. Anyone who knows Greendale football as I do, knows who they are. I thank them all for volunteering their time and effort. Greendale football truly is a community effort and I am very proud and thankful to live here.

In conclusion, all I can say is that as long as the energy and attitude stay at the level they are now, the Panthers will always be the teams to beat. The term "success breeds success" could never be truer here. Even though I have a very small part in this program, I am very proud to be associated with it, and to be able to bring it to the screen of all of your computers.

That pretty much does it for this season here on the website. On behalf of the Greendale Panther Touchdown Club, Chuck Cairns, Chris Ksobiech, and Ben Mattrisch who all help me with the audio/visuals here, I want to wish you all well as you move on in your everyday life. If anything of interest comes along, we will certainly post that here, but for the most part, it will now slip into hibernation mode once again. Come next summer, it will slowly rise from its nap to cover the 2011 football seasons!

Feel free to browse around if you are bored or would like to refresh those fond memories. There are plenty of pictures, articles, and videos to help you along the way.

See you next year!

GREENDALE

2010 AAYFL CHAMPIONS!

On November 6th, the Greendale Panthers youth "A" team defeated a tough Wauwatosa East team 28-17 in the final championship game held at Greendale.

The 2010 AAFYL Champions!

The season began back on August 7th with 52 teams all vying for the coveted Jim Jarecki Memorial Trophy. Through an extensive regular season schedule and 3 playoff games, it came down to just two teams who would play each other 13 weeks later. Wauwatosa East, who represented the North Conference and Greendale, who represented the South Conference were those two teams. When the dust finally settled, the Greendale Panthers would finish off their remarkable season with a perfect 9-0 record as they defeated Wauwatosa East 28-17. Greendale has now earned the right to be called AAFYL Champions for 2010.

On behalf of the Greendale Panther Touchdown Club, the community of Greendale, and the parents and fans from everywhere...

CONGRATULATIONS!

The youth Panthers started their program back in 1977 and were members of what was then called, The Vince Lombardi League. In 1980, that league was reorganized and re-named to, The All-American Youth Football League. At that time, there was only one team, which consisted of just 7th and 8th graders. A few years later, they expanded to a "B" team, which then consisted mostly of 6th and 7th graders. Today, they are now running 4 teams. An "A", "B", "C" and a "D" team. This adds up to approximately 140 boys playing football at the youth level here in Greendale. The only difference between the youth teams and the high school teams is the obvious size of the players and the speed of the game. Well, there is one other difference too. The youth team dons the colors of orange and black instead of the Kelly Green and White. It's a long story but for the most part, it started way back when Greenfield picked green and white at the onset of the league, so the Panthers just decided to go with the orange instead. They actually had the opportunity later on to switch their colors to match the high school but by then, a tradition was set, so it was decided that they would just keep the color orange.

The youth Panthers have a long tradition of winning, including 10 league championships. Upon joining the league in 1977, Greendale won league championships in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 2010. Besides the championships, they also hold 10 South Conference titles including 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 2010. They have also taken the Southeast Division Championship 7 times in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2010.

The Panthers have even ventured to out of state tournaments where they've captured three Chicago area titles and took second place back in 1984 at the National Youth Super Bowl, which was held in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The AAYFL started with just 8 teams back in 1980 but have since expanded to 44 community-based teams that range from West Bend all the way to Burlington in the southeastern part of Wisconsin. For more history and information about the AAYFL click here.

Bad News & Worse News!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/26/10

First the bad news!

Pius at Greendale (Varsity)About all you are going to get from this article is the final score. The Panthers would fall short of advancing to the 2nd round of the WIAA Division 2 State Playoffs by losing to Milwaukee Pius 22-20. The game was played in Greendale at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium.

Pius scored on the 2nd play of the game and never looked back. Greendale fought hard and was keeping up, but too may mistakes here and there prevented them from taking control of the game.

For a regular news article from the GreendaleNow website, click here.

And now the worse news!

I'm thinking that most of you Panther fans out there are wondering where the normal article is... not to mention the highlight video. Well I hate to have to tell everyone this, but there won't be much of an article and for sure there won't be any video. At least for right now.

In the 13 years that I have been shooting video, I have never had a problem with video tapes when recording events whether it be weddings, special events, and of course football games. Apparently I must have been the lucky one to buy a bad pack of DV tapes. Every game, I get a new 3-pack of tapes for the 3 cameras that are used at each game. When I was going to process the tapes, I come to find that there was nothing recorded. The main elevated camera's game film was blank and a tape from one of the field side cameras was also blank. A different tape was used for the other camera did work, but the angle is such that it can not be used effectively.

Because of that, generating a detailed article and creating a highlight tape as we have been doing for the last 6 years will not be possible. No one is more sick then I am. Efforts are being made to see if we can get some kind of video from Pius, but until that happens, we will not be able to provide any kind of video.

I sincerely apologize for this mishap. Preventive measures will be taken in the future to prevent this from happening again.

Let The Playoffs Begin!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/20/10

St. Francis at Greendale (Varsity)Believe it or not, the Wisconsin's high school football season is over for all but 224 teams. These teams will continue on for at least one more game as the WIAA State Playoffs begin Tuesday. The Greendale Panthers are one of those teams. They will end up as a #2 seed in Division 2 for this year. Their record for the regular season ended up being 8-1, which includes their most recent victory over the St. Francis Mariners at Stephen J. Gavinski Memorial Stadium last Wednesday night. The score was a very lopsided 50-7 and wasn't really much of a game at all. The Panthers will now await to see who they will play next Tuesday for the first round of the WIAA Playoffs which should be announced this Friday around noon.

St. Francis at Greendale (Varsity)St.Francis would kick first to start the game. Their kicker would end up kicking it out of bounds so Greendale would start from their 35-yard line. They didn't waste any time for 7-plays later, Panther quarterback Sam Brick would find Kennedy Ringelberg in the right flat who then raced to the end zone completing a 35-yard scoring play for the first touchdown of the night. Senior Andrew Brees would send his kick between the uprights and into the darkness for the point after making the score 7-0 with 8:56 left in the 1st quarter of play.

St. Francis would have to start their first drive of the night as Brees kicked the ball well into the end zone. They would be forced to line up for a punt from their 35 as they went 3 and out. During this punt play, a few Mariner blockers didn't do a very good job of blocking, which allowed Curtis Nelson to lay out and block the kick. The ball would roll into the end zone of which fellow teammate Jordan Campbell would fall on for a Panther touchdown. Brees would convert his kick as Greendale added 7 more points to the board making the score 14-0 with 6:47 left in the 1st quarter.

St. Francis at Greendale (Varsity)Brees would sail another kick into the end zone forcing St. Francis to start from their 20. They would run 4-plays before the fumbled the ball of which Greendale's Drake BarcZack would recover.

Greendale was now looking at a short field as they would start from the Mariner's 32. Four plays later, Brick would cross the goal line from 6-yards for another Panther touchdown. Brees would make the kick making the score 21-0 with 4:27 left in the 1st quarter.

This time, the kick was returnable. St. Francis would start this drive from their 32. On the very first play, they would fumble again of which BarcZack would fall on again for his second fumble recovery of the game.

St. Francis at Greendale (Varsity)Brick would now line up his offense on the Mariner's 32. They failed to get a first down so the coaches elected to try a 43-yard field goal instead. After a perfect snap and a perfect hold by Ernie Valente, Brees would swing his kick and drill it between the uprights with plenty of room to spare. The score was now 24-0 with 3:23 now left in the 1st quarter.

This time Brees actually kicked the ball over the end ling forcing the Mariners to start from the 20 again. They would run 5-plays before being forced to punt once again.

The Panthers would begin this drive from their 38. Four plays later, they would enter the zone that pays as Brick would throw a perfect pass to catch Alex Najera in stride for a 37-yard scoring strike. Brees would do that thing that he does and now the Panthers were all over the Mariners by a score of 31-0 and still :06 seconds left in the opening quarter.

St. Francis at Greendale (Varsity)Brees would again make the Mariners start from their 20. At this point it was now in the 2nd quarter. During the punt, a Greendale player would collide with the punter causing the yellow flags to fly for roughing the kicker. This would breath new life into the Mariner's drive. It didn't seem to make much difference anyway for they would have to punt 4-plays later.

The seemingly overpowering Panthers would start this drive from their 31. Three plays later, they would score again as running back Luke "Bull Dog" Drumel would carry one in from 47-yards out. Brees would miss this extra point try making the score 37-0 and 8:25 left in the 1st half.

St. Francis would return the following kick to their 23. They would have to punt going 3 and out.

The Panthers would now begin this drive from their 36. Nine plays later, Brick would hook up with Brett Nethery in the right corner of the end zone for a 13-yard scoring strike. Brees would make this kick and now things weren't looking to good for the Mariners as they were behind by a score of 44-0 with 2:44 left in the 1st half.

The Mariners would start their next drive from their 17. They would only run 4-plays before the 1st half clock came to an end.

Greendale would kick to start the 2nd half. The rain that was on and off all night was now really on. The Mariners would try to get something going for they have yet to cross the 50-yard line in the game. They would run 6-plays against the Panther's 2nd team defense before being forced punt the ball away again.

St. Francis at Greendale (Varsity)The Panthers would now send out their 2nd team offense as well. Taking the snaps for Greendale would be Zack Henderson. They would only run 7-plays before being forced to punt for the first time in the game. Nethery almost placed another kick out at the 1, but a strange bounce put the ball into the end zone for a touchback.

With the running clock run now in force, the Mariners would begin this drive from their 20. They would run 3-plays before having to line up for another punt as the 3rd quarter would come to an end.

After the teams switched side, the Mariners would line up in punt formation. When it rains, it pours for the snap from center sailed way over the punters head and into the end zone. Out of shear panic, the punter would pick the ball up and tried running it out of the end zone instead of just taking the 2-point safety. Well that didn’t work out to good for he only got as far as the 4-yards line before being forced out of bounds.

Greendale would only need 1-play as running back Mike Scheidt would sprint in around the left side for Greendale 7th touchdown of the night. This time the coaches sent in Akil Huggins to attempt the kick, which just missed to the left. The score was now a very lopsided 50-0 with 10:19 left in the game.

St. Francis at Greendale (Varsity)The Mariners would end up starting their next drive from their 29. Seven plays later, they finally crossed the goal line on a 1-yard run. The point after try was true making the score 50-7 with 5:17 left in the game.

The Panthers would start this drive from their 29 after the kick. They would run 7-plays before turning the ball over on downs at midfield.

The Mariners had just enough time for one play but they would jump causing the yellow hankies to fly. That would eat up that last little bit of time left as the clock would finally come to rest.

Greendale would win this one 50-7. This takes their record to 8-1 for the year. They already were in the playoffs coming into tonight but as of right now, they don't know who they will play. They do know that they will be a Division 2 team, but that’s about it. Stay tuned to this website for we will post the brackets as they are made available.

"To Legit... To Quit!"
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/19/10

St. Francis at Greendale (Freshmen)Did you ever watch a sporting event in which one team looked like they were finished and were going to lose, but then this divine miracle would occur and the team that you more or less wrote off came back from the almost dead and won? Personally, I love those games. They are not only exciting to experience; they make you realize once again the power of human nature... that instinct to survive and win... that anything can happen if you put your heart, your mind, and your soul in to it.

That is exactly what happened Tuesday night at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium in Greendale. At one point, the Panther's freshmen football team was down 28-6 early in the 2nd half against a very good (6-1) St. Francis team who just scored on an half opening kick return for a TD and a 98-yard fumble recovery for a TD, and yet they kept their cool heads and fought back to score the winning touchdown with :13 seconds left in the game to win by a score of 34-28. It was one of the best examples of heart, soul, and will, that I have seen in a long time. If you weren't at this game, you blew it because I would much rather watch something like this then "Jersey Shore". OK, lucky for me that show is on Thursday nights and not Tuesday nights! I can't miss my Snooky you know!

You just can't draw up a better way to end a season then this, as the freshmen of Greendale High School would finish their season with a 5-3 record. Congratulations to the players and coaches for another winning season. Hopefully the players will remember this feeling so that it will motivate them for next year because guess what? The 2010 season is over, which now means the 2011 season officially begins. That's kind of how Varsity Head Coach Rob Stoltz and the rest of the coaching staff run Greendale's program. If you ever question why they do that, take a look around at all of the other high school football programs in the area. It won't take long for you to realize why Greendale is always a powerhouse year after year at all levels in the sport of football.

All things considered, it was another perfect night for football. The Panthers would be receiving first to start the game. They would begin their first drive of the night on their 33. They would put a huge 11-play scoring drive together right off the bat that was capped off by quarterback Zack Henderson running it in from 7-yards out. The try for 2-points failed making the score 6-0 with 5:52 left in the 1st quarter of play.

Following the ensuing kick, the Mariners would begin their first drive of the game from their 31. At this point, the Panther's defense was throwing bodies around, as they backed up St. Francis forcing them to punt from their 25 going 3 and out.

After a beautiful spiral punt that seemed to sail forever, Greendale would have to begin from their 17. They could only manage a 6-play drive before being forced to punt the ball away from their 30.

St. Francis at Greendale (Freshmen)After a poor kick, St Francis would start their next drive from Greendale's 49. The Panther defense forced them to punt again after just 4-plays. At this point in time, Greendale is looking to be the more dominate team on the field.

Henderson would line his offense up on their 12 following the punt. They managed to get the ball to midfield in 6-plays taking the game into the 2nd quarter before being forced to punt the ball away.

The Mariners who looked to be having problems on offense would now take over on their 40 after the kick. It looked like they got it together finally, as they put a 9-play scoring drive together that was capped off by a 1-yard running play around the left side. They would go for the point after try and make it, taking the lead by a score of 7-6 with 5:05 left in the 1st half.

Greendale would begin their next drive from their 34. It looked like the green machine was marching again, but 4-plays later, they would fumble the ball away to the Mariners on the Mariner's 44.

Two plays later, the Mariners would make Greendale pay, as they would reach the end zone in 2-plays for another quick touchdown. They would convert the kick so Greendale was now behind by a score of 14-6 and 2:52 left in the 1st half.

After the ensuing kick, the Panthers would begin their next drive from their 31. They would be forced to punt, however, going 3 and out.

After another short punt, the Mariners would line up on Greendale's 45. They would run 4-plays before being forced to punt back to the Panthers with 1:22 left in the 1st half.

Greendale would now end up deep at their end of the field as they would have to start from their 15. They would hook 10-plays together before the clock finally ran out in the half. St. Francis was still on top of Greendale by a score of 14-6.

St. Francis at Greendale (Freshmen)The Panthers would be kicking to open the 2nd half. Lightening would strike the Panthers here as the St. Francis return man would return the opening kickoff 70-yards for another Mariner touchdown. This time Greendale would block the the extra point kick making the score 20-6 with 9:47 left in the 3rd quarter.

After a nice return by Jake Zywicki, Greendale would try and answer back starting from midfield. They looked real strong and determined during this drive as they just pounded it on the ground. All of a sudden, 8-plays later, Henderson would fumble on the 2-yard line of which a St. Francis player would pick up and run 98-yards the other way for what looked to be a game breaking touchdown. The Mariners would go for the 2-point conversion and make it and now it seemed that St. Francis was on the roll as they scored 28 unanswered points with a score of 28-6 and 6:21 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Panthers now had their work cut out for them as they would start from their 36. The one thing I noticed right away was that no one was hanging their head. In fact, the offense put a ground pounding 12-play scoring drive together that was capped off by a 5-yard pass from Henderson to Gabe Kaliebe. The 2-point try was no good making the score St. Francis 28 – Greendale 12 with 2:49 left in the 3rd quarter.

The visiting Mariners would begin their next drive from Greendale's 44 following a nice return. It looked like they were going for the juggler, but Greendale's defense rose to the occasion and stopped them 4-plays later on downs at the Panther's 12-yard line.

St. Francis at Greendale (Freshmen)Greendale would now have a long way to go. They managed to claw their way to the Mariner's 39 before looking at a 4th and 10. On the very next play, Henderson would roll out to his right buying time before he unleashed a pass to the end zone where he would find Nate Miller for a huge 39-yard scoring strike. Henderson would "will" his way into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and Greendale was now back in this trailing by a touchdown with a score of 28-20 and :12 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

This time the Panthers weren't going to take any chances of kicking the ball deep so they kicked it out of bounds forcing the Mariners to start from their 35. They would run 1-play before the quarter would come to an end. After the teams changed sides, St. Francis still seemed like they were in control of the game, but 4-plays later they would be forced to line up for a punt near midfield. It was here where something went way wrong for the Mariners as the center launched the ball over the punter's head so he had no choice but to run the ball down and fall on it, but by this time the ball was on his 21 and Greendale would now be taking over 1st and 10.

St. Francis at Greendale (Freshmen)There was now 7:57 left in the game and Greendale was still down by 8 points. Three plays later, Henderson who now seemed possessed with super human strength, would take it in from 6-yards out for another Panther touchdown. Zywicki who also seemed possessed by whatever Henderson had, took a pitch and scampered in for the 2-point conversion and just like that, the game was all tied up at 28's with 6:59 left in the game.

The Panther coaches again told their kicker to kick a squib kick so that #1 would not have a chance to touch the ball. He was very fast and was the player that was mauling them on kick returns. St. Francis would end up starting from their 38. They would put 5-plays together before looking at a 4th and 16 from Greendale's 30-yard line. The Panther defense would need to make a huge stop here if they wanted any chance of winning this game. The Mariner quarterback would make a play action fake and loft it down field, but the ball was knocked away by a Panther defender. Greendale would now have the ball on their 30 with 4:48 left in the game.

All I could think of was what I was thinking before. I will be honest in that the way things were going, I thought Greendale was going to get rolled. Now here they are starting what could be a possible game winning drive. I stood back and watched the coaches work their magic. The offensive coordinator Steve Stoltz had everything under control and knew exactly what he wanted to do. The trick was to make sure that you had enough clock to score, and then not leave any clock for St. Francis if you did score.

Well the march would begin as both Henderson and Zywicki would be splitting the running duties. The got down masterfully to the Mariner 20 before Greendale called a time out. The reason they called a time out was because it was 4th and 5 with just :41 seconds left in the game. This was pretty much a big play to say the least. On the snap of the ball, Henderson would roll to his right looking for someone to pass too. Then he just tucked the ball away and took off up the field with an attitude. St. Francis players were actually bouncing off of him like he was made of steel or something. He would then get tackled gaining enough for the 1st down. They would run another play when Greendale called their last time out.

St. Francis at Greendale (Freshmen)It was now 2nd down and goal from the 3-yard line and there was only :18 seconds left in the game. After the time out, Henderson would line his boys up. The thing you have to keep in mind here is that Henderson and Zywicki have been pounding the ball up the middle behind their offensive linemen. These guys were stating to get a little tired. St. Francis also figured that Greendale was going to keep doing what they have been doing the whole drive, so they brought everyone up to the line of scrimmage for what would be a game deciding play. On the snap of the ball, Henderson would take it up the middle and fight through nothing but arms and helmets until he crossed the goal line for a touchdown. I kid you not that his legs were still going as he was laying on the turf. I guess he wasn't planning on stopping during that play. Greendale would try for the 2-point conversion and fail, but they did take the lead by a score of 34-28 and :13 seconds left in the game.

During the extra point try, Greendale picked up an unsportsmanlike penalty so that meant that they would have to kick from their 25. That also meant that St. Francis would probably end up with the ball at midfield. Well, that is what happened as the Mariners would get the ball on Greendale's 46 with :07 seconds left in the game. The first play they ran was a long pass down the right sideline that was slightly overthrown. The next play, Greendale had 5 guys deep. That pass would be picked off by Zywicki to end the game.

Greendale after getting punched in the mouth early, would shake it off and answer back by scoring 28 unanswered points to win the game. The Panthers could have taken the easy way out and just rolled over and died, but they chose to fight instead. My hat goes off to the entire team and the coaching staff for not only an exciting game, but for the entire exciting season.

St. Francis at Greendale (Freshmen)

On behalf of the Greendale Panther Touchdown Club and Panther fans everywhere, CONGRATULATIONS and we can't wait to watch you guys next year.

There's A New Sheriff In Town!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/15/10

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)It's hard to believe that we are getting close to the end of the regular high school football season. We are looking at just 1 game left for the regular season. Then for some teams, the playoffs will begin. Greendale has already made the playoffs by virtue of their winning record. All a team has to do in order to make the playoffs is be above .500. Although there have been cases where .500 teams have made the playoffs through extenuating circumstances.

As for tonight's game, well it was real evident that the Greendale Panthers were no match for the hosting Wauwatosa West Trojans, as they would win easily by a score of 42-8. With this win and the fact that Whitnall lost to South Milwaukee, Greendale would end up being crowned the new 2010 Woodland Conference (Black Division) Champions. This would be their 5th conference championship in the last 10 years.

Wauwatosa West would be kicking first to start the game. After a nice little return by Greendale's Luke Drumel, Greendale would begin the first drive of the night from their 36. It didn't take long for Greendale to flex their muscle for on their 2nd play, Drumel would take an inside handoff and race to the end zone from 40-yards out for Greendale's first touchdown of the night. Kicker Andrew Brees would make the point after giving Greendale an early lead by a score of 7-0 and 11:35 left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kickoff, Tosa would start their first drive of the night from their 31. They would be forced to line up for a punt after just 3-plays. During the snap on the punt play, the center would roll the ball back of which the punter had no choice but to fall on it on his 1-yard line.

The field doesn't get much shorter than this as it only took 1-play for Greendale to score, as Drumel would take it in off of left tackle. Brees would make his kick making the score 14-0 with 9:32 still left in the opening quarter of play.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)Tosa would get a huge return on the following kick. They would end up starting this drive from Greendale's 39. After picking up a free 10-yards on two offside penalties by the Panthers, they would finally get a real play off. Well that real play turned into a real interception as Greendale's Matt Wanezek would pick the pass off giving his offense the ball on their 31.

The Panthers would eventually turn the ball over on downs 6-plays later giving West a 1st and 10 from their 40-yard line.

The Trojans couldn't muster up anything and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale would now line up on their 15 following the kick. Two plays later, a major miscue would occur. While quarterback Sam Brick was rolling out to his left, he would find himself getting in trouble and would turn and go the other way. During that time, he would drift into his own end zone and found himself in the grasp of a would-be tackler and just threw the ball away trying to avoid the safety. Unfortunately, the ball would end up in one of his linemen's hands, which is illegal so he would be called for intentional grounding. Because he was in the end zone at the time, it was ruled a safety anyway so Tosa would pick up 2 free points off of the Panthers.

After the free kick, Tosa would find themselves on their 37. Two plays later, Panther defensive back Manny Medina would intercept another Trojan pass to give his offense the ball on their 43.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)Nine plays later, Greendale would cross the goal line again, as Brick would carry it in from 6-yards out. Brees would split the uprights making the score 21-2 with 1:02 still left in the opening quarter of play.

Tosa would start their next drive from their 20 as Brees would make the end zone on his kick. The ever-present Panther defense would force them to punt going 3 and out.

It was now in the 2nd quarter as Greendale would line up on their 33. Six plays later, Greendale would hit pay dirt again as Brick hooked up with a wide open Kennedy Ringelberg down the middle of the field for a 14-yard scoring strike. Brett Nethery was now in doing the kicking chores and would make his kick as Greendale now started to look like they were running away with this by a score of 28-2 and 8:09 left in the 1st half.

Tosa would now try to get something going from their 23. Again they could not move and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

The Panthers now had the ball on their 23. Two plays later, they would flex their aerial muscle again as Brick would again find Ringelberg for a huge 65-yard scoring strike for a score. Nethery would make the kick making the score 35-2 with 6:09 left in the half.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)Tosa, who was in trouble now would start their next drive from their 27. Three plays later, Panther safety Peter Pekar would snatch a tipped pass for another interception for Greendale.

Brick and his entourage would now line up on Tosa's 46. They couldn't anything again and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

Like a true PGA pro with a pitching wedge in hand, Nethery would angle his kick towards the sideline. All the Tosa return man could do was watch it go out of bounds at the 1-yard line.

Tosa would have to be very careful here for one mistake could prove costly. On their very first play, something must have gone wrong because all of a sudden the referrers were signaling a touchdown as Wanezek would fall on a fumble in the end zone for the Panthers. Nethery would make the kick and now this game was blown wide open as Greendale was all over Tosa by a score of 42-2 with 2:37 still left in the 1st half. By rule, because it was still in the first half, the 35-point running clock rule could not be enforced.

The struggling Trojans would now have the ball one their 19. They ran 6-plays before the 1st half finally came to an end.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)Greendale would be kicking first to start the 2nd half. The Trojans would be forced to start from their 20 as Nethery would make the end zone with his kick. With a running clock now in play, Tosa would put 6-plays together before Panther cornerback Jo Jo Sardina would steel another pass from Tosa.

Greendale would now have possession on their 38. They would run 9-plays before eventually turning the ball over on downs on Tosa's 28.

This time Wauwatosa was able to string 5-plays together before being forced to punt once again.

Greendale would now take over on their 40. The Panther coaches would now send in sophomore quarterback Heath Cone to call the signals. They would end up turning the ball over on downs 4-plays later on Greendale's 47-yard line.

The Panthers now had their entire second defense in the game. Five plays later, Greendale's David Michaels thought he would get into the act as he intercepted another Tosa pass on Greendale's 13.

The Panthers couldn't do anything on this drive and were forced to punt from their own end zone.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)After a short kick, the Trojans would find themselves on Greendale's 35 with just over 3 minutes left in the game. Four plays later, Tosa would finally reach the end zone on a halfback dive up the middle from 6-yards out. The ball would hit the right pole on the kick and would end up no good making the score 42-8 with 1:06 left in the game.

The Panthers would now start from their 35 after the ensuing kick. Senior Noah Jankowski was now living the dream as he was in at quarterback for the Panthers. They would run 2-plays before the clock would finally come to rest at zeros.

The final score would be Greendale 42 - Wauwatosa West 8. They have one regular season game left against the (3-5) St. Francis Mariners. This game will be played next Wednesday at 6:30pm in the friendly confines of Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium in Greendale.

And For Dessert... Turnovers!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/14/10

Greendale at Wauwatosa (Freshmen)The time... 5:30pm (not 4:15pm)... The place... Wauwatosa West High School... The event... a freshmen game between the Greendale Panthers and the Wauwatosa West Trojans... The weather... ARE YOU KIDDING ME! It's the middle of October and all you need in a hoody sweatshirt to survive, unless of course you are a Greendale coach. All they had on was their black, short sleeve Greendale polo shirts that don the proud Panther logo.

I looked behind me and counted about 75 Panther fans sitting comfortably in the visitor stands that are located about 1/2 mile from the field. Behind them, I couldn't help noticing the traffic jam on southbound 45. Geeesh! There are just too many cars out on the road today. Whatever happened to horses anyway?

At any rate, for those who headed out to the game, they already know the score. For those of you that didn't, I will tell you. The final score was Greendale 14 - Wauwatosa West 6. The game was just loaded with turnovers. In fact, I even checked the ball to see if someone put grease on it or not. Whatever the case was, Greendale did end up coming away the victor and are now 4-3 for the year with 1 game remaining.

The Panthers would be receiving first to start the game. They would line up on their 39 with Bryan Goyette at the helm. On the very first play, Goyette would take off behind the right tackle picking up some nice yards before fumbling of which Tosa would recover on their 46.

Tosa was not immune to fumbles either for on their drive, the center would end up rolling the ball back to the quarterback a few times causing them to go the wrong way. They eventually were looking at a 4th and 20 and were forced to punt.

Greendale at Wauwatosa (Freshmen)Greendale would take over on their 20. It was here where the Panthers put together a clock eating 15-play drive together that was capped off when Goyette saw Mitchell Brees who ran a skinny post for a 19-yard scoring strike. Greendale would go for 2 and convert as Goyette would keep it on an option making the score 8-0 with just :56 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Trojans would start their next drive after the ensuing kick from their 34. They would run 2-plays before the 1st quarter finally came to an end. After the teams switched sides, Tosa would run 3 more plays before being forced to punt.

Greendale would now have the ball on their 20. Two plays later, Goyette would pick up a nice 8-yard gain before fumbling the ball again.

West now had a short field in front of them as they would start from Greendale's 33. On their very first play, the exchange between the quarterback and running back was botched causing a fumble of which Greendale's Parker Bychinski would recover. Greendale now had the ball back on their 37.

Two plays later, Goyette would be intercepted by a Trojan defender on Tosa's 30-yard line. It was now Trojan's ball.

Wauwatosa was now having major issues moving the sticks as they were forced to punt from their 31 going 3 and out.

Greendale at Wauwatosa (Freshmen)During the punt play, Greendale's return man tried making a catch in traffic and was hit as soon as he caught the ball. That of course caused the ball to pop out of his hands and right into the hands of a Trojan. As a result, Tosa would retain possession only now they were on Greendale's 44 with a new set of downs.

Three plays later, the Trojan quarterback would keep the ball on an option play, but would then fumble it away to Greendale who would take over on their 44-yard line.

Zack Henderson was now in at quarterback for the Panthers. He would run 4-plays before being intercepted by a Trojan defender who returned it 15-yards to the Greendale 45.

Here again, the Trojan center ended up rolling a snap back on the ground causing the poor quarterback to run it down know all to well that he was going to get crunched. They would have to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale was calling timeouts in an attempt to keep as much time as possible as they were going to have another shot at the end zone yet. After the kick, they would line up on their 31 with 1:43 left in the 1st half. They cold only string 6-plays together before being forced to punt with :31 seconds left in the half.

The Trojans would just run 2-plays before the 1st half game to an end. The score was still 8-0 in favor of Greendale.

Greendale at Wauwatosa (Freshmen)The Panthers would kick first to start the second half. After a nice return, the Trojans would start their first drive of the half from their 43. Apparently their center still hasn't figured out how to snap the ball yet as he rolled a few more back to his quarterback. Because of that, they would have to punt looking at a 4th and 20 from their 33.

Greendale would now take over on their 30. They would run 6-plays before turning the ball over on downs near midfield.

Wauwatosa would take over 1st and 10 from Greendale's 49-yard line. They were not able to do anything so they ended up punting going 3 and out.

Greendale now had the ball on their 21. They too couldn't move the ball and were forced to punt going 3 and out with 2:15 left in the 3rd quarter.

Greendale at Wauwatosa (Freshmen)The Trojans would now take possession of the ball on Greendale's 44. The Trojan quarterback would get loose up the left side line for a huge gain taking the ball all the way to the Panther's 10 where it would be 1st and goal. On the very next play, Greendale's Colin Butkiewicz would jump a slant route to intercept a pass and then would scamper 95-yards the other way for a monster pick-6 for Greendale. The 2-point conversion failed, but Greendale would now lead 14-0 with 1:04 left in the 3rd quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Tosa would start their drive from their 45. They managed to get the ball all the way to Greendale's 9 before turning the ball over on downs back to the Panthers.

Greendale at Wauwatosa (Freshmen)Greendale now had their back against the wall. They managed to work their way out but eventually had to line up for a punt after 5-plays. On this play, a very interesting thing would happen. The ball was punted away without any problem and it was not caught by Tosa so it was just rolling along on the ground and almost came to a stop. Meanwhile, you could see that the return man was kind of sneaking up on the ball while watching the 4 or so Panther players focusing on the ball waiting for it to stop so they could down it. The next thing I knew was that this Tosa player reached down and picked the ball up cleanly and took off rather quickly catching Greendale with their pants down so-to-speak. The return man would take it 60-yards to the end zone for Wauwatosa's one and only touchdown of the night. The 2-point try was no good making the score 14-6 with just 6:02 left in the game.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would start from their 27. They would put a 7-play drive together before being forced to punt the ball away.

Tosa would now take over on their 34 with just 1:24 left in the game. They would run 5-plays before Greendale's Chad Newton would intercept a long pass attempt locking Greendale's victory up for good. All the Panthers had to do was take 2 knees and the game was over.

Greendale would win by a score of 14-8. They will now return home next Tuesday to play the St. Francis Mariners for their last game of the season. That game is scheduled to start at 5:30 pm.

Varsity Reserve Finishes The Season UNDEFEATED!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/11/10

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)It's hard to believe that this year's high school football season is getting close to the end. It seems like it just started. Maybe it's because of the ridiculously warm weather we are having. Usually you can tell when a football season is close to ending by the number of layers of clothing you have on. Well, you didn't need that this past Monday night at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium as it was still in the mid 60s for the scheduled varsity reserve game between the Wauwatosa West Trojans and the Greendale Panthers. This contest would finish with Greendale handling the Trojans rather easily as they defeated them 49-18. It was a game of big plays by both teams, which made it more fun to watch.

The Trojans would kick first to start the game. They had a pretty good kicker so the return man Doug St. Onge would have to wait for the ball. As soon as he made a clean catch, he would take off full speed up the field and take it all the way to the house for a game opening 79-yard kick return for a touchdown. Because St. Onge, who does the kicking, was winded from the run, the coaching staff would send in the offense for the 2-point try. Quarterback Zack Henderson, who drives the bus for Greendale's offense, would line up in a the shotgun formation and await the snap. On the snap of the ball, he would take off left and then pitch the ball to Mike Scheidt who then sprinted into the end zone for the 2-points making the score 8-0 with 9:47 left in the opening quarter of play.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Wauwatosa would start from their 30 after the ensuing kick. They would only manage to run 3-plays before they would be forced to line up for a punt. After the kick, Greendale's return man Gaelan Seibold would make the catch and he would sprint 51-yards up the field to the end zone for another specialty team touchdown. This time St. Onge would make the kick and Greendale found themselves on top 15-0 with 6:28 left in the 1st quarter and their offense hasn't even touched the ball yet.

The Trojans would start their next drive from their 31. They would run 6-plays before being forced to punt the ball away.

The Panthers would start from their 17 after the kick and would have to punt going 3 and out.

This time, the Trojans would start from Greendale's 45. They would eventually turn the ball over on downs after 4-plays.

Greendale would attempt to get something going from their 38. They would run 2-plays before the 1st quarter would come to an end. After they switched sides they would continue their march and eventually reach the end zone as Henderson would find St. Onge for a 12-yard scoring strike. The kick would be wide right making the score 21-0 with 9:20 left in the 1st half.

Wauwatosa would now begin from their 32 after the kick. They would be forced to line up for another punt after going 3 and out. During the punt, the ball would end up bouncing off a Greendale player who didn't see where it was and the Trojans would cover the ball to retain possession with a new set of downs at midfield. That mistake would cost the Panthers, as the Trojans would score on a 30-yard scamper by the quarterback. The try for 2-points would fail making the score 21-6 with 7:49 left in the 1st half.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)After the kick return, Greendale would start from their 36. Five plays later, they would cross the goal line again as Scheidt would take a pitch and sprint in from 19-yards out. St Onge would make this kick making the score 28-6 with 5:56 left in the half.

West started from their 20 as St. Onge kicked the ball into end zone. They could only put 3-plays together before being forced to punt going 3 and out.

Henderson and company would begin their next drive from their 48. Four plays later, he would throw his one and only interception of the game.

Tosa would take over 1st and 10 from their 42. Again they would be forced to punt going 3 and out.

After the catch, Greendale would find themselves on their 47 with :02 seconds left in the half. This was just enough time for one last play. On the snap of the ball, Henderson would roll to his left and then unleash a bomb towards Seibold way down field. He would make the catch and take it to the zone for a 1-play 53-yard scoring strike with no time on the clock. St. Onge would convert the point after try making the score 35-6 as the first half came to an end.

Greendale would kick to start the 2nd half. The Trojans would begin their first drive of the half on their 37. Two plays later, the quarterback would run an option keeper around the right side and sprinted 60-yards for a Trojan touchdown. They would fail to convert their 2-point conversion try making the score 35-12 and 8:57 left in the 3rd quarter.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers would answer back, however, as they hooked up 9-plays with Scheidt capping off the drive with a 7-yard run for the score. St. Onge would make the point after try making the score 42-12 with 5:31 still left in the 3rd quarter.

Tosa would get a nice return on the following kick all the way to Greendale's 48. They would put a 9-play together before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 11-yard line.

Greendale now had possession deep in a hole. Two plays later, Scheidt would take a handoff up the middle and sprinted 69-yards to pay dirt for a score. St Onge would make his kick and Greendale was now out in front 49-12 with :40 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. Because the lead was more than 35-points, the clock would now run without stopping except for time outs and injuries.

The Trojans would take over after the kick on their 35. The Panthers were now changing out their starters on defense. Ten plays later, Tosa would finally cross the goal line on a 1-yard run up the middle. The 2-point attempt was no good making the score 49-18 with 4:40 left in the game. At this point, the clock would now go back to normal operating procedures.

Greendale would now put their 2nd offense in the game. They would run 3-plays before having to punt the ball away.

Tosa would end up doing the same going 3 and out as well.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers would then get the ball back and run 3-plays before the game would finally come to an end.

Greendale would win convincingly by a score of 49-18. This would also be their last game of the year because St Francis does not have enough players to support a varsity reserve team. Never the less, the Panthers will finish the season going undefeated with a record of 8-0-1, which includes the forfeit for next week. They would put 212-points up on the board while only allowing 111-points on defense. Some of the guys will still suit up for the varsity and some of the them will be handing in their gear.

On behalf of the Greendale Panther Touchdown Club and Panther fans every where, Congratulations Panthers on a job well done! We all can't wait to see you guys in action next year.

Arial Circus!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/8/10

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)It was just a matter of time before the Greendale Panthers and the Whitnall Falcons would meet for the season. Both teams were favored to win the Woodland Black Division because both have high-powered offenses. Whitnall's Joel Stave is very close to the top of the list of Wisconsin's top high school quarterbacks. Of course this would pose a huge test for the Panther's defense as they have yet to see the likes of a throwing quarterback like this. Greendale, on the other hand, is no slouch on offense either, as they have been averaging just over 35-points per game. Whitnall has been having a little trouble on the defensive side of the ball so when it is all said and done; it was going to come down to which team was better-prepared and ready to play tonight.

When the clock finally read zeros, it would be Greendale that looked the best as they defeated the Falcons by a score of 52-21. As a result, Greendale is now in first place by themselves in the Woodland Conference Black Division with just two games left in the regular season.

Whitnall would kick first to start the game. You never know what the Falcon's coaching staff will do so you always have to be ready for everything. As it ended up, Whitnall would try catching Greendale off guard by trying an onside kick right off the bat, but Greendale was ready and recovered the ball on their 48-yard line.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Panther quarterback Sam Brick would line his offense up and would be looking at a different style of defense. Whitnall was playing what is called a "Radar Defense." The thing that makes this defense unusual is that everyone stands up. This type of defense always makes good conversation for some say its biggest advantage is that everyone can see and react better because the players are already standing up with their hands in a ready position to address the blockers, and others say that this makes it easier for the offense linemen because they are already looking at tall targets and you don't get that low charge from a down lineman, so in essence, it is easier to block then digging guys out of stances. No mater how you look at it, at the end of the day, it will always come down to who is physically better and tougher.

The Greendale coaches anticipated that Whitnall would do this so that was addressed during the previous week's practice. They also knew that this may affect their run game, but it shouldn't affect their passing game. Well that was very evident right off the bat as Brick would complete his first 3 passes on the Panther's opening march towards the zone. Five plays later, Greendale was looking at a 4th and 10 so they elected to call in their senior super kicker Andrew Brees, for a 37-yards field goal try. After a perfect snap and hold, he would make the kick giving Greendale an early lead by a score of 3-0 with 10:43 left in the opening quarter of play.

Whitnall would have to start from their 20 after the ensuing kick, as Brees would kick it in to the end zone. He has been doing this on a regular basis lately, which is always nice to have for you don't have to worry about any kind of a big return. It was now Greendale's turn to see if they could stop one of the state's top quarterbacks in Joel Stave. He is putting up huge numbers and undoubtedly was the best quarterback that the Panthers have faced all year. The key for Greendale is to keep pressure on him so that he can't just sit back there and pick you a part. Well that's what happened on the third play as Stave was rolling to his left when Panther defensive end Jordan Campbell came in from behind and nailed Stave causing him to fumble of which fellow teammate Bobby Hintz would recover.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale was now looking at a short field as they would line up on the Falcon's 25. Two plays later, Greendale would make Whitnall pay for that turnover, as Brick would find senior wide out JoJo Sardina down field for a 30-yard scoring strike. Brees would convert the point after try making the score 10-0 with 7:45 left in the 1st quarter.

The Falcons would again have to start from their 20 as Brees legged another kick into the end zone. Twelve plays later, Whitnall would cross the goal line, as Stave would take it in from 2-yards out. Danny Miskov would make his kick as Whitnall would reel in Greendale a bit by a score of 10-7 and 2:52 still left in the 1st quarter.

The Whitnall kicker ended up kicking the ball out of bounds, which results in the ball automatically being placed on the 35. This time the Panthers could only hook 5-plays together before being forced to punt the ball away.

The Falcons would start their next drive from their 25. This time they would only be able to run 5-plays before they would have to punt the ball back to the Panthers.

After the kick, Greendale would begin this drive from their 38. This time they would have to punt going 3 and out.

It was now into the 2nd quarter as Whitnall would begin their next drive from their 24. All of a sudden it seemed as both defenses were able to stop these two powerful offenses as Whitnall would have to punt going 3 and out as well.

After the kick, Greendale would find themselves on their 42. Four plays later, Brick would find Brees in the right flat and after a nifty move, he would shake loose and head up the field completing a 30-yards scoring strike. Brees would split the uprights making the score 17-7 with 7:17 left in the 1st half.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Brees would force the Falcons to start from their 20 once again. They would run 5-plays taking the ball all the way to the Panther's 33 before turning it ball over on downs back to Greendale.

The Panthers would now take over 1st and 10 on their 33. Seven plays later, Greendale would hit the promised land again, as Brick would throw a little swing pass to Sardina who would then take it in from 9-yards out. The point after try was good and Greendale now jumped out in front by a score of 24-7 with just 2:20 left in the 1st half.

Never under estimate Whitnall for they are very capable of scoring quickly. This same situation happened last year only there was :42 seconds left. Whitnall ended up scoring a touchdown on the Panthers from 80-yards out so Greendale knew they couldn't relax. Brees wouldn't help their cause as he made sure that they would have to start from their 20. Low and behold, 10-plays later, Whitnall would do it again as they would cross the goal line with a perfect throw from Stave and a perfect catch by Joey Kitten for a 20-yard scoring strike. Miskov would make the point after as Whitnall would get back in this with a score of 24-14 and just :04 seconds left in the half.

Greendale would receive the following kick but the clock would then run out during that play.

Whitnall would get the ball first to start the 2nd half. The question now was, could they keep their momentum going? The answer to that was yes for 10-plays later, Whitnall would make the end zone again on a 20-yard pass play from Stave to Ben Schafer. Miskov would make the point after try making the score 24-21 with 7:56 left in the 3rd quarter.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale would now have to try and get the momentum back as they would have to start from their 24. Eight plays later, Brick would find Brees again for a 22-yard scoring strike. Brees would make his kick making the score 31-21 with 4:43 left in the 3rd.

For the first time in this game, Brees would not make the end zone on his kick so the return man would have a chance to make something happen as he returned it to the Whitnall 25. Greendale was finally able to make a stop 6-plays later that forced the Falcons to punt the ball away.

Greendale would now start deep in the hole from their 9-yard line. It was here where they would put a huge 13-play scoring drive together that was capped off by a 10-yard TD run from Brick. The extra point kick was good, as Greendale was now starting to put some distance between Whitnall by a score of 38-21 and 9:56 now left in the game.

Brees was back to his normal self on the following kick as he easily made the end zone. Whitnall was now in need to engage to get back into this game for there was till plenty of time left for their offense. It was here, however, that they may have sealed their fate for 5-plays later, they were looking at a 4th and 14 from their 31. Instead of playing the field position game and kicking, they would instead roll the dice and go for it knowing fair well that if they didn't get it, Greendale would have a real short field for their offensive scoring machine. On the snap of the ball, Stave would drop back and was running out of time real quick. He would launch a pass way down field where Greendale would have 3 defenders covering 2 receivers in the same proximity. The pass would fall incomplete and Greendale would take over just 31-yards away from the goal line.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Two plays later, Greendale would be in the end zone again as Brees made a great catch from Brick for a 26-yard scoring strike. The point after try was good increasing Greendale's lead with a score of 45-21 and 7:15 left in the game.

Then disaster would strike against the Falcons for on the ensuing kick off, no one from Whitnall seemed to be in a hurry to get the ball so Greendale's Tyler Fink figured that he would take it instead. This was now looking like the beginning of the end for Whitnall.

Two plays later, Brick would hit a new receiver from his stable in Kennedy Ringelberg for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Brees would add another point and Greendale now looked to be running away with it by a score of 52-21 and 6:19 left in the game.

As usual, the Falcons would start their next drive from the 20 for the same reason. They would put a long time consuming 16-play drive together as both teams were now substituting players. This drive would end on the Panther 4 as the clock finally ran out.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale would win this time by a score of 52-21. While everyone knew about Joel Stave coming into this game, they may have not heard too much about Sam Brick. You can bet that after this game, people will take note for Sam finished the night going 14-26 for 329 yards and 6 touchdowns while running for another. As in the case all year, Whitnall's defense is just having trouble keeping teams out of the end zone while their offense doesn't seem to have too much trouble putting the ball into the end zone. The problem of course is the ratio.

Greendale will be traveling to Wauwatosa next week to play the Wauwatosa West Trojans. The Trojans are 2-5 and coming off of a win last week against Greenfield. The game is schedule to start at 7:00.

Persistence Pays Off!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/7/10

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)Sometimes you can get in a football game where you work and work and work, but everything you do ends up coming up short. You tell yourself to forget what happened and you keep plugging forward in an attempt to make something happen. Well that was how the freshman game went this past Thursday night as both Greendale and Whitnall just couldn't keep anything going long enough to reach the end zone. There was one drive however, where Greendale managed to keep it going just long enough to score the one and only touchdown of the game as Greendale eventually defeated the Whitnall Falcons 8-0 at home under a beautiful fall sky. What made this evening even better was that I could stand on the sidelines in my shorts as the temperature at game time was just below 70 degrees. Boy, I remember back in 1991 when I was still coaching varsity, we were wearing Gortex, Sorrel boots, long underwear, and snowmobile mittens already just to avoid freezing to death. I guess times have changed. GLOBAL WARMING? And the problem is what?

The Panthers would be receiving first to start the game. After the return, Panther quarterback Bryan Goyette would set his offense up on their 22. They would fail to get the necessary yardage for a first down so they were forced to punt going 3 and out. This would be the beginning of the ping pong match between the two teams.

After a very poor punt, the Falcons would start their first drive from the 50. Things were going the wrong direction for Whitnall, as the Panther's defense backed them up 20-yards forcing them to punt as they were looking at a 4th and 30.

Greendale would now take over on their 27 after the kick. They could only manage 5-yards before being forced to line up for another punt. This time, the Falcons would collide with punter Chad Newton drawing a 15-yard rouging the punter penalty so as a result, the Cats would keep their drive going only now they would have the ball on their 49-yard line instead. They couldn't get anything going after so thay eventually turned the ball over on downs on Whitnall's 46.

The Falcons offense failed to get their first down so they ended up punting the ball back to the Panthers.

After a great kick and a nice roll, Greendale would have to start from their 3. They would hook up a 7-play drive before being forced to punt from midfield.

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)It was now the start of the 2nd quarter as both teams have yet to score or mount any kind of a drive. The Falcons would begin this drive from their 18. They could only muster up 5-plays before looking at another punt.

The Panthers would now have the ball on their 44. On the very first play, Goyette would be intercepted by Whitnall who would now take over on their 45.

Again, the Falcons could not do anything so they ended up punting going 3 and out.

Greendale would take over on their 17-yard line. This time, Greendale ran two consecutive pass plays and just like that, the Panthers found themselves on Whitnall's 20 with a new set of downs. Well that was all she wrote on that drive as they would end up turning the ball over on downs as all 4 pass plays failed. Whitnall would now take over from their 20.

The Panthers almost had a break as the Whitnall quarterback got crushed on a pass play and fumbled the ball, but the Falcons ended up recovering it but lost 9-yards in doing so. The Cat's defense did what they were coached to do and forced Whitnall to punt once again.

After a week punt, Greendale would take over from their 47. Yep! Three plays later they were lining up for another punt.

Whitnall would now attempt to get something going from their 25 after the kick. This time they were able to string 6-plays together before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 45 with just :15 seconds left in the 1st half.

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)Greendale would get 1-play off before the scoreless half would come to an end. Since there was no scoring on the field, I thought I would go score a hot dog at Greendale's infamous concession stand. All I can say is that you will never have to worry about going scoreless there. A big salute to all of the volunteers who run that operation for without their help, it would have been a complete scoreless evening!

It was the Panthers turn to kick as the 2nd half began. Whitnall would bring their offense out and start from their 42. The Panthers pushed a rather anemic Whitnall offense backwards forcing them to put once again.

After a very poor punt, Greendale would take over at midfield. Guess what? Three plays later, Newton was back out on the field, but not before he removed the ice bag that was wrapped around his leg... Not really! I was just trying to add a little something to this story to make it a little more interesting.

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)Whitnall would now own the ball on their 33. They would run 3-plays before looking at a 4th and 3. Instead of punting, they would go for it, but the Panthers defense would swarm in and drop the runner for a 3-yard loss instead. Greendale would now have good field position as they would begin from Whitnall's 38-yard line.

NEWSFLASH! Greendale just put a 10-play scoring drive together as Goyette would hit Nate Miller on a hard 4-yard slat route for the game's first score. Greendale would then line up for two and guess what again? Goyette would take off running to his left and cross the goal line untouched for the 2-point try making the score 8-0 with 2:14 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Falcons would now have to see if they could answer back. They would begin their drive following the kick from their 35. It started out looking like Whitnall got the party started, but it would soon be shut down, as they would eventually turn the ball over on downs on Greendale's 39.

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)It was now the 4th quarter with Greendale in possession of the ball. They went back to their old ways as they were forced to punt going 3 and out at their 46.

After a nice kick by Newton, the Falcons would take over from their 19. The Falcons just couldn't get any kind of forward momentum going so they were forced to punt going 3 and out.

After the punt, Greendale would take over at midfield. At this point, all they needed to do was avoid mistakes and run the clock out. Well, that was the plan anyway, but 5-plays later, Greendale would fumble of which Whitnall would recover on their 29-yard line.

The Falcon's offense failed to get their 10-yards needed, as they ended up turning the ball over on downs on their 35.

Greendale would now start dragging their feet in an attempt to get this game over with. Of course you need to get first downs, which didn't happen here, as the Panthers would give the ball up on downs on Whitnall's 32 with 3:13 left in the game.

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)On the very next play, the Panthers would regain possession as Greendale's Alex Roloff would intercept the ball on Greendale's 44. This time the Panther offense was able to tie a few plays together. In fact they were on the Whitnall 3 with :33 seconds left in the game. After a time out, Greendale would pull their normal quarterback out and line up in their version of the wildcat formation. Everything was looking good until the ball was snapped. It sailed over everyone's head and ended up on the Falcon's 19 with a Falcon player laying on it. This would give Whitnall a few plays in the game as there was still :26 seconds left on the clock.

Four plays later, of which all were passes, the game finally come to an end as the Greendale Panthers would defeat the Whitnall Falcons 8-0. This takes the Panthers to 3-3 for the season with just 2 games left on their schedule. They will play next week at Wauwatosa West High School. This game will start at 4:15pm instead of the normal 5:30pm.

Varsity Reserve

A Yellow Tie
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/4/10

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)The undefeated Greendale Panther Varsity Reserve team hit the road Monday to Hales Corners where the Whitnall Falcons reside. After all of the hoot'in & holler'in and ... OH YEAH! yellow flags... both teams walked away without a win or a loss! Personally, that doesn't make sense to me for I would think that the idea of playing football games is to determine a definitive winner. Needless to say, there wasn't one as both teams finished with 22-points thus resulting in a tie. How that tie happened was very interesting to say the least for it involved a few trick plays, a few untimely penalties, and plenty of turnovers.

As for who I thought was the better of the two teams? Well, because the score ended in a tie, I will keep my opinion to myself for I would just get in trouble by somebody... if you know what I mean! At the end of the day, Greendale still remains undefeated for the 2010 season with just 2 games left on their schedule.

The game would begin with the Falcons kicking first to Greendale. After a nice little return, Greendale would begin their drive from their 40. Five plays later, Greendale quarterback Zack Henderson would keep it himself and scurry in from 10-yards out for a Panther touchdown. The kick for the point after was blocked making the score 6-0 with 7:42 left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Whitnall would start their first drive of the night on their 20. They would only run 3-plays before being forced to punt back to the Panthers. Of course things always can go wrong on this play. That's why they call these special plays. During the retun catch, the ball would come loose and instead of Greendale having the ball 1st and 10, Whitnall had the ball 1st and 10 again only now they were on Greendale's 48 instead of their 20 where they originally punted from. They were still having some issues moving the ball and ultimately turned it over in 4-plays on downs back to Greendale on the Panther's 42.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)It looked like Greendale had it going again as they continued to run Mike Scheidt on toss plays, but 3 plays later, Henderson would throw an interception to Whitnall and now they would take over on their 25-yard line.

Four plays later, Whitnall would complete a 12-yard scoring strike for their first points of the game. They would try for a 2-point conversion and make it making the score 8-6 with :56 seconds left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would start from their 35. They would run 9-plays that took the game into the 2nd quarter before Schiedt would sprint into the end zone from 6-yards out for another Panther touchdown. Scheidt would again run with the ball for the 2-point try and made it making the score 14-8 with 7:40 left in the 1st half.

The Falcons would start 1st and 10 from their 37 on their next drive. They would put 13-plays together before eventually crossing the goal line for their second touchdown of the night. They would go for 2 again and convert giving them the lead back by a score of 16-14 with 3:16 remaining in the 1st half.

The Panthers would start their next drive following the kick from their 48. They would end up having to punt from Whitnall's 46 as they ended up going 3 and out.

After the punt, the Falcons would take over on their 18. They too could not get a 1st down and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale would take over following the kick on their 40 with :50 seconds left in the half. They would run 7-plays before the clock finally ran out for the half. Whitnall was leading by a score of 16-14.

The Panthers would kick first to start the 2nd half. After the kick, the Falcons would set up from their 35. They would run 4-plays before fumbling the ball on their 40 giving the Panthers great field position.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)That field position didn't do that much as they ended up having to punt after 5-plays and a couple of penalties.

The Falcons now had their backs against the wall as they would have to line up from their 11-yard line. The Panther's defense would push then back even farther, as they would eventually have to punt from the end zone snapping the ball from the 3.

Following the kick, Greendale would end up with great field position, as they would start from the Falcon's 24. It only took 6-plays before Scheidt would cross the goal line for another Panther touchdown. They would convert the extra points by running the same play again for the 2-point conversion making the score 22-16 with 5:28 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Falcons would start their next drive after the kick from their 20. On the very first play, there was a little thievery as Greendale's defensive nose guard Matt Beard would tackle the quarterback and in the process, took the ball away and came down with it as they both hit the ground. Greendale now had the ball back 1st and 10 on Whitnall's 19-yard line.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)It was about here when it looked like there were fireworks as yellow flags started to take off and land all over the field. On the first play, Scheidt would reach the end zone for an apparent touchdown, but there was a penalty on the Panthers nullifying the score and backing them up to the Falcon's 22. On the very next play, the Panthers would be flagged again backing them up even farther to the Whitnall 27. Two plays later, Greendale got nailed with another holding and a unsportsmanlike penalty backing them way up. It was obvious that something was going on and Greendale was starting to get frustrated. What was happening was that Greendale was running this pitch play the whole game with Scheidt and they were pounding out big yards. Whitnall was just not able to stop this play based on their personnel and defensive set. Naturally their bench was frustrated and starting chirping in the ref's ears and just like that, it seemed like there was a hold every time that play was ran from this point on in the game. At any rate, Greendale did turn the ball over on downs on Whitnall's 23-yard line.

The Falcons would only manage 5-plays before being forced to punt the ball away.

Greendale would now own the ball on the Falcon's 39. They were called for more penalties backing them up and forcing them to punt from their 47.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)The Falcons would now take over following the ensuing kick from their 26. On the very first play, the ball would be intercepted by Greendale and returned the other way. During that play, flags started flying all over the place again, as there was a block in the back by Greendale on the return. They would keep the ball and start their drive from the Whitnall 39.

The Panthers would fail to get a first down on this drive and ended up turning the ball over on downs on Whitnall's 31.

It was now into the 4th quarter. The Falcons looked to be marching in until Greendale's David Michaels would intercept the ball giving it back to the offense on Greendale's 16.

The Panthers would move forward and then backwards via the flag. They would have to punt after 5-plays from their 19-yard line.

After the punt, Whitnall would take over from their 49. They would again look to be going in for a score when Greendale's Kennen Goyette would come up huge for the Panthers as he would intercept a pass in the end zone for the Panthers.

Greendale would now have the ball on their 20 with the lead and a new set of downs. With time starting to get low, all they needed to do was get 1st downs to keep the clock moving. That didn't happen as they were forced to punt from their 27 going 3 and out.

Whitnall, who was trailing, would now have the ball on their 36 with 4:12 left in the game. They would run 5-plays getting the ball to Greendale's 38 before reaching into their bag of tricks and calling a hook & lateral that was executed perfectly for a game tying touchdown. During this play, Panther defense back Robby Blackwood would suffer an injury that would require an ambulance. This whole even would hold the game up for about 45 minutes as the medical staff tended to Robby. Eventually he was taken away to the hospital, but not before the temperature dropped about 15 degrees just like that.

Both teams would get a warm up period before Whitnall would try for the 2-point conversion and the lead. On the snap of the ball, the quarterback would jump and try throwing a pass over the middle that fell incomplete keeping the score all knotted up at 22 apiece with 2:40 left in the game.

Greendale had plenty of time on the clock for a possible game winning drive, as they would start on their 44. Two plays later, which included a long run by Henderson, Greendale would have the ball on Whitnall's 23 with 1:34 left in the game. It was here where they would run that pitch play to Scheidt. He would get around the right side and looked to be heading up the side line, but out came the yellow flag again right on schedule nullifying that gain and would push Greendale back to the Falcon's 33 looking at a 2nd and 20. Two plays later, a huge mistake would happen as the ball looked to have been snapped to early and over the head of Henderson so Greendale was now looking at a 4th and 30 as the ball was resting on the Whitnall 43 with 1:00 left in the game. They would have to punt.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)After a great punt, Whitnall would now have to line up on their 1-yard line with :54 seconds left in the game. At this point, a safety would be all that's needed for the Panthers to win the game. The Falcons could only make it to their 30 before having to line up for a punt with enough time for one last play.

They would get the ball off, but the return would not reach the end zone as the clock would finally run out.

This game would end in a tie at 22-22 as both teams seemed exhausted after a hard fought close game. It came down to Greendale having trouble stopping the pass while Whitnall had trouble stopping the run. Needless to say, neither team won and neither team lost as Greendale's would now walk away with a 6-0-1 record. The Panthers will now host the Wauwatosa West Trojans next week at Gavinski field for their 2nd to the last game of the season. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.

Another No No...
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/1/10

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)For the 4th time this season, the Greendale Panthers ended up pitching another shut out in the wind and the rain, as they defeated the Greenfield Hawks 35-0 in Greenfield. The defense, which is looking to be the stingiest defense in the area, has only allowed 48 points in six games, which comes to an average of 8-points per game. Of course their offense is also a force to wreck-in with as they have compiled a total of 212 points for a 35.3 point per game average. That is usually a winning combination by any means. Greendale came into the night with a 5-1 record while Greenfield was coming in at 1-4.

The Panthers would kick first to start the game. Greendale's thunder foot Andrew Brees would easily make the end zone forcing the Hawks to settle for the 20 to start their first drive of the night. It didn't take long for Greendale to make something happen for on the very first play, the Hawk's quarterback had a little trouble with the snap and Panther linebacker Drake BarcZack would make sure he wouldn't pick it up as he collided with him forcing the fumble of which teammate Jordan Campbell would eventually recover.

Panther quarterback Sam Brick would set his offense up on the Hawk's 20. It took all of 3-plays for Greendale to capitalize on the turnover, as Brick would run behind big Matt Pulizos, Jordan Campbell, and Kennedy Ringelberg, who operate on the left side, for a 7-yard scoring jaunt into the end zone. Brees would hit the scoreboard after splitting the uprights for the extra point making the score 7-0 with 10:48 left in the opening quarter of play.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)Brees would make the end zone on the ensuing kick forcing Greenfield to start from their 20. The Cat's defense looked fully charged up as they forced the Hawks to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale would start their next drive from their 46. Two plays later, Brick would unleash a bomb to junior wide-out Brett Nethery for a huge 54-yard scoring strike. This time Brees would have a rare miss on his kick making the score 13-0 with 7:56 left in the 1st quarter.

The Hawks would have to start from their 20 one again compliments of Brees and his size 12 shoe. They would run 6-plays before BarcZack would drop the quarterback for a 9-yard loss forcing them to have to punt once again.

Greendale would now own the ball on their 45. Six plays later, Panther running back Luke "Bull Dog" Drumel would dive over the goal line from 3-yards out for another Panther touchdown. Brees would make the kick as Greendale was starting to blow this game wide open with a score of 20-0 and :46 seconds still left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)This time, Brees would come up a few yards short on the end zone with his kick, which then gave the return man something to do for a change. He would get the ball to the 25 where Greenfield would begin their next drive. The Panther defense was able to force another 4th down but instead of punting, Greenfield elected to go for it instead. That probably wasn't a good move as they were dropped for a yard loss by a very aggressive and overpowering defense. Greendale would end up looking at a short filed as they would line up on the Hawk's 31.

On the very next play, Brick would under throw his intended receiver resulting in an interception so the Hawks would now take over on their 12.

Greenfield ended up going backwards under the pressure of Greendale's defense. As a result, they would have to punt from their end zone going 3 and out.

The Panthers would begin their next drive from the Hawk's 43. They would string 9-plays together before turning the ball over on downs at Greenfield's 6-yard line.

Greendale again would pick up right where they left off as they backed the Hawks up again. They would have to punt from their end zone going 3 and out.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)Under a heavy rush, the Hawk's punter ended up getting the ball away on a huge kick. There was a running into the kicker penalty, which would have only netted 5 yards, but Greenfield would decline the penalty knowing that they got a great kick away and didn't want to risk another attempt.

With just 1:58 left in the 1st half, Greendale would take over near midfield. Five plays later, Brick would follow the left side of his line again and score from 5-yards out. Brees would make the kick making the score 27-0 with just :33 seconds left in the half.

The Hawks would receive the following kick and would only run one play before the clock finally ran out.

Greenfield would kick first to open the 2nd half. With the rain starting to fall and the wind starting to blow, Greendale would start their first drive of the half from their 20. Behind some strong running performances by Drumel and Brick, they would put a 16-play drive together only to have it stall out on Greenfield's 10-yard line.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)Greenfield was now desperately trying to get something going. It finally looked like they got the car started but only for 8-plays before Greendale's Joel Sirus would run down and drop the quarterback for a 9-yard loss forcing the Hawks to punt once again.

Greendale's offense would now line up on their 42 after the kick. On the very first play, Head Coach Rob Stoltz, who doesn't let the weather affect his play calling, would signal in a pass play that would have Brees running a deep fade route. Brick would throw his way of which Brees would catch and then sprint 40-yards for another Panther TD. Based on the way the game was turning out, the Panthers would elect to go for 2 in an attempt to engage the 35-point rule. The fact that the weather was getting nasty and the fact that Greenfield seemed overmatched... it just seemed to make sense to try and shorten the game so that no one gets hurt or sick on both teams from the weather. Brick would line up in his shotgun formation and take off behind the left side of his line and crossed the goal line for the 2-points. The score was now 35-0 with 10:55 left in the game.

During the previous touchdown play, Greenfield committed a personal foul penalty, which would be assessed on the kickoff. Apparently, those extra 15-yards were enough for Brees to kick it through the uprights making what would be a 55-yard field goal. It didn't count of course but it was sure funny to see.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)As a result of that effort, Greenfield would have to start from their 20 as the clock would now continue to run. The Hawks didn't have much of a passing game so the elected to pound it out on the ground. They would put 10-plays together before eventually turning the ball over on downs against Greendale's 2nd team defense.

Greendale would just run 4-plays before the game finally came to an end.

Greendale would win rather easily by a score of 35-0. Everyone always talks about the Panther's offense but they don't mention too much about the defense. Well this game marks their 4th shut out of the season, which is something that you don't see to often. The Panthers will now return home next week to host the Whitnall Falcons. Whitnall has one of the state's top quarterbacks running the offense so you can expect a real test for the Panther's defense. Whitnall is coming in off of a victory over Eisenhower last week so they will be flying high and ready to go. Last year, Whitnall beat Greendale for the first time in 9 years year so the Panthers will have an ax to grind this year. This game should draw a huge crowd so get there early.

Freshmen

It Just Wouldn't Start!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/30/10

Greenfield at Greendale (Freshmen)Usually when you need to go somewhere, you get in your car, turn the key, and the starter attempts to start your car. If everything is working properly, it should start. If something is wrong, the starter will just crank and crank and the motor will not start. That's kind of what happened Thursday night to the freshmen football team. They could turn the key, but they just couldn't start the motor. Without the motor running, they weren't able to get where they wanted to go. That would be the end zone. As a result of that, they failed to score and lost to the visiting Greenfield Hawks by a score of 6-0. This game was supposed to be played at Greenfield, but they had new sod laid down this year on their main field and they wanted to try and limit the number of games on it for this year. The varsity is playing there, but some of the lower level games have been played on the road instead. Even at that, Greendale couldn't take advantage of the home turf and would come up short.

The game would begin with Greenfield kicking first. The Panthers would start their first drive of the night from their 30-yard line. They would run 11-plays before looking at a 4th and 11 from the Hawk's 34. On the following play, Greendale's quarterback Chad Newton would throw a pass down field that was intercepted instead of being knocked down by a Hawk's defender. In essences, Greenfield did Greendale a huge favor as they would have to start from their 5 instead of the 34, which is where they would have had it if they just knocked the ball down instead.

Greenfield at Greendale (Freshmen)Greenfield could only manage 6-plays before looking at a 4th and 11 from their 20. They would make the smart decision and punt the ball away.

After a very poor punt, Greendale would take over at the midfield strip. They too would have to punt going 3 and out.

After the partially blocked kick, Greenfield would take over on their 35. They would go 3 and out again and have to punt from their 45-yard line.

The Panthers would start their next drive from their 27 with :03 seconds left in the 1st quarter. They would run the 1-play as the clock went to zeros. After switching sides, Greendale would end up throwing an interception on their 35, which was returned to the Panther's 13.

Four plays later, Greenfield would cross the goal line from 2-yards out for the game's first score. They would go for the 2-point conversion and fail making the score 6-0 with 8:12 left in the 1st half.

Greenfield at Greendale (Freshmen)The Panthers would start their next drive following the kick from their 39. They would run 6-plays before turning the ball over on downs as they could not convert the 4th and 1. The Hawks would now take over.

Again Greenfield would have to punt going 3 and out.

After a terrible punt, the Panthers would find themselves starting from Greenfield's 43-yard line. They would only manage 6-plays before turning the ball over on downs once again on the Hawk's 24.

Greenfield would run 5-plays before being forced to kick the ball away from their 45.

There was now only :55 seconds left in the 1st half as Greendale would take over on their 36. They couldn't do a thing once again and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

The Hawks who were up 6-0 would get the ball after the kick and just took a knee to end the 1st half.

Greenfield at Greendale (Freshmen)The Panthers would kick to open the 2nd half. Greenfield would set up their offense on their 36-yard line. Five plays later, Greendale's Bryan Goyette would make a spectacular diving interception giving the offense the ball on their 30-yard line.

It was here where Newton and his band or brothers would put an 8-play drive together only to have it end on downs just 12-yards short of the goal line.

Greenfield now had the ball deep in their end of the field. They would grind out a time consuming 13-play dive only to end up fumbling the ball of which Greendale's Tim Venturi would recover on the Panther's 36.

It was now into the 4th quarter as Greendale was attempting to get on the board. They could only get to their 41 in 6-plays before looking at a 4th and 17. They had no choice but to punt the ball away.

The Hawks would take over on their 40 with 6:20 left in the game. They would start to grind out another time consuming drive. It looked like they were going in again, but on their 8th play, the ball would squirt on of the ball carrier's hands and roll into the end zone of which Greendale would fall on for the touch back. Just like that, instead of being scored on, Greendale would have the ball on their 20 1st and 10 going the other way with 2:40 seconds left in the game.

Greenfield at Greendale (Freshmen)That would all come tumbling down on the next play when Newton was dropping back for a pass and would get sandwiched between to Greenfield players and ended up fumbling the ball right back to the Hawks on Greendale's 9-yard line.

Greendale's defense stepped up huge at this point and kept the Hawks out of the end zone as they forced them to turn the ball over on downs with 2:09 left in the game.

Two plays later, however, Newton would throw another interception that was returned to the Panther's 14 where all Greenfield had to do was take 3 knees to end the game.

Greendale would loose quietly to the Hawks by a score of 6-0. It was a game where the Panthers just couldn't keep the motor running during their drives. They now fall to 2-3 for the season. With just 3 games left, the Panthers will host the Whitnall Falcons next week. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.

Panthers Declaw The Hawks
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/27/10

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)A pair of greens took to the gridiron at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Field Monday night, as the Greendale Panthers faced off with the Greenfield Hawks. It started off fast and furious as both teams scored touchdowns on their very first offensive plays but that would be it for one of the teams as the Panthers defeated the Hawks 26-6 in this week's varsity reserve football game. Greendale did most of the damage through the air while Greenfield's ground game was stymied by a very quick and aggressive Panther defense. It almost looked like the Panthers were moving twice as fast as Greenfield, as they just swarmed the ball all night long. As a result of the win, Greendale remains undefeated with a 5-0 record with just 3 more games left on their schedule.

The Hawks would win the toss and elected to defer so Greendale would elect to take the ball first. After the opening kick return, Greendale would begin their first drive of the night from their 31. On the very first play, Panther quarterback Zack Henderson would see Gaelan Seibold breaking away on a fly pattern for a 65-yard scoring strike. Panther kicker Doug St. Onge would make the extra point kick to put Greendale on the board first with a score of 7-0 and 7:41 left in the 1st quarter of play.

After the ensuing kick, the Hawks would start their first drive of the game from their 20. Greenfield would show the Panthers that they could do the same thing only they did it with a run. After the hand off, the Hawk's running back would slip through off of right tackle and race 80-yards to the end zone for Greenfield's first touchdown of the game. They would line up for a 2-point conversion that ended up no good making the score 7-6 Greendale, with 9:21 left in the 1st quarter. So far 13-points were scored in just :39 seconds. OK, one could only wonder what the final score of this game would be if this trend continued.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would now line up after the kick on their 30. Twelve plays later, Panther running back Mike Scheidt would score on a sweep to the left for Greendale's second touchdown of the game. Greendale would get caught with too many men on the field so they would have to back up 5-yards for the extra point try. The snap would be somewhat mishandled which resulted in the kick being blocked so the score would end up being 13-6 with 5:48 left in the 1st quarter.

The Hawks would line their offense up after the kick on their 25. Four plays later, they would fumble of which Greendale would recover and take over on the Hawks 40-yard line.

The Panthers would put 8-plays together before turning the ball over on downs after a pass fell incomplete on a 4th and goal from the 5.

Greenfield now had their backs against the wall. They failed to advance the ball in 3-plays forcing them to punt from their own end zone.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)After what was a poor kick, Greendale would take over on the Hawk's 32. Seven plays later, Henderson would throw a perfect strike to Seibold on a quick slant from 3-yards out for Greendale's third TD of the night. The Panthers would go for 2 and failed making the score 19-6 with 8:55 now left in the 2nd quarter.

The Hawks would now take over on their 35 following the kick. They would grind out 11-plays before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 26 where the Panthers would now take over.

The Panthers would only run 5-plays before being forced to punt from their 45. During the punt play, the Hawk's return man would fumble the ball of which Greendale would recover on the Hawk's 17-yard line. On the following play, Henderson would keep it on an option around the right side before fumbling the ball on the 2, but Greendale's David Michaels would be in the area to pick the ball up and fell into the end zone for a Panther touchdown. St. Onge would convert the kick making the score 26-6 with 1:11 left in the 1st half.

With the clock running low, the Hawks would take over on their 31 following the kick. They failed to gain a yard and were looking at a 4th and 10 with just :05 seconds left in the half. Instead of risking a punt, they would leave their offense out and run one more play to burn the rest of the clock up. The score at halftime was Greendale 26 - Greenfield 6.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would kick first to start the 2nd half. The Hawks would start their drive on their 43-yard line. They would run 10-plays before fumbling the ball of which Greendale's Akil Huggins would recover. The Panthers now had the ball on their 43.

Henderson and his offense would string 6-plays together before turning the ball over on downs on Greenfield's 33 where they would now take over.

The Hawks could do no better then 7-plays before they turned the ball over on downs back to Greendale on the Panther's 45.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)It was now into the 4th quarter. It looked like Greendale was going in but Henderson would fumble the ball away on the Hawk's 5 where the birds would take over 1st and 10.

The Panthers would make the Hawks work as they only allowed 33-yards in 13-plays before the Hawks ended up turning the ball over on downs at Greenfield's 38.

There was now only 1:04 left in the game and Greendale had the ball. All Henderson needed to do was take 2 knees to end the game.

The Panthers would remain undefeated for the season as they defeated the Hawks 26-6. They will now hit the road next Monday as they will play the Whitnall Falcons. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30.

An Ugly Win
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/24/10

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)The Greendale Panther's offense is a well rounded scoring machine that can travel the field in many ways. They have a fine tuned running game and a very complicated passing game that always gives opponents fits. Coming into tonight's contest, they have been averaging about 35 points per game. The one thing that is always overlooked is that other then the Brown Deer game, the second team offense usually ends up playing the majority of the 4th quarter.

Tonight was a different story. It almost seemed like someone else was playing in Greendale helmets, as they had all sorts of trouble sustaining drives. They had to punt 5 times and missed out on several opportunities that were given to them by their defense. From the stands, it looked like they were their own worst enemy resulting from lack of concentration and execution. Nevertheless, the Panthers did walk away with the win over the visiting South Milwaukee Rockets by a score of 24-0 at Stephen J Gavinski field.

Greendale would receive first to open the game. They would begin their first drive of the game from their 29. They would have to punt after 5-plays because penalties and dropped balls that were uncharacteristic of the Panthers.

South Milwaukee would now start their first drive of the evening from their 41. They could only put 6-plays together before turning the ball over on downs to Greendale on the Panther's 23-yard line.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale, who was going against the wind, would end up throwing an interception on the second play of their next drive, as a Rocket defender would snatch a Sam Brick pass to give the Rockets a short field on Greendale's 23.

Greendale's stingy and aggressive defense only allowed 5-yards before forcing South Milwaukee to line up for a field goal. On the snap, the holder would bobble the ball allowing enough time for the Panther front line to get in and block the kick. Greendale would now take over on their 22.

Greendale's high-powered offense didn't look to powerful on this drive for they were forced to punt after just 4-plays.

Greendale's punter Brett Nethery would pin the Rockets deep on their 11. They too couldn't go anywhere and were forced to punt back to Greendale going 3 and out.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale would now attempt to get something going from their 47. Six plays later, Brick finally would hook up with Nethery for a 24-yard scoring strike for the first points of the game. Senior kicker Andrew Brees would split the uprights making the score 7-0 with 11:54 now left in the 2nd quarter.

Brees would kick the ball out of the park forcing the Rockets to start from their 20. The Panther defense again forced South Milwaukee to punt going 3 and out. This time, however, the punter was roughed causing the yellow flags to fly and giving the Rocket's new life, as their drive would continue on. Three plays later, Greendale's Joel Sirus would step in front of a Rocket pass and returned it all the way to the Rocket's 14 where Greendale would now take over.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)The Panther's troubled offense would now attempt to capitalize on the turn over. Again they failed to get a first down and were forced to line up for a 35-yard field goal attempt. The Rockets ended up dodging a bullet as Brees pulled the kick to the left giving the ball back to the Rockets on their 18-yard line.

This time, South Milwaukee was able to put 7-plays together before eventually being forced to punt one again.

Greendale would begin this next drive on their 14. They managed to connect 7-plays taking the ball all the way to the Rocket's 8 before looking at a 4th and goal. They elected to send the field goal unit in to attempt what should be an easy kick for Brees. On the snap of the ball, Ernie Valente who does the holding would flip the ball over his shoulder without even looking to Brees who would sprint around the right end and with a clever little spin move, would cross the goal line for another Panther touchdown. Brees would then make the extra point making the score 14-0 with 1:27 left in the 1st half.

The Rockets would again have to start from their 20 compliments of Brees and his monster kick. They would have to punt again after going 3 and out.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)There was now just :18 seconds left on the clock and Greendale had the ball on the Rocket's 44 with no time outs left. Brick would roll right and then take off down field where he was eventually tackled on the Rocket 29. He would then get up and quickly spiked the ball to stop the clock with just :02 seconds left. The Panther coaching staff would send in the field goal unit to attempt what would be a 45-yard field goal. On the snap of the ball, Brees would bang it through the uprights for 3 more points as the first half would come to an end. The score at half was now 17-0 in favor of Greendale, as both teams headed to the locker room.

With the wind at their back, the Panthers would kick to open the 2nd quarter. The Rockets would again have to start on their 20 after another kick sailed into the end zone. The Panther's defense seemed to be manhandling the Rockets as they forced them to kick going 3 and out.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale would now start their first drive of the half on their 35. Their rather lethargic offense again was forced to punt going 3 and out as well. It was starting to look like this game was taking on a defensive tone, as both teams couldn't get anything going on offense.

South Milwaukee would now try again as they lined up on their 25. Six plays later, they would have to send in their punter again to kick back to the Panthers.

Greendale would line up on their 26 after the ensuing kick. Four plays later, they would have to call their punter in to kick the ball back to the Rockets.

There was now 3:59 left in the 3rd quarter, as the Rocket's offense would take the field. Five plays later, they would need their punter who you would have to think was starting to get a sore leg.

After a poor punt, Greendale would take over at midfield. Again Greendale could not get a first down and had to punt back to the Rockets. The fans in the stands were now starting to get bored as they were expecting some offense.

South Milwaukee would now be pinned deep at their 6-yard line. They had to be careful down here for one mistake could prove costly. Well, they did end up making a mistake as Greendale's Bobby Hall would intercept a pass and return it to the South Milwaukee 10-yard line. The question now was could they take advantage of this opportunity.

After 3-plays with a couple of penalties, the question was answered with a resounding "NO", as Brick would throw an interception in the back of the end zone wasting another scoring opportunity.

As a result of that play, the Rocket would take over 1st and 10 from their 20-yard line. They managed 4-plays before Greendale's Peter Pekar would snatch a tipped ball out of mid air for another Panther interception. This would give his offense the ball on their 46.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)Finally, Greendale was able to grind out a time consuming 15-play scoring drive, as running back Luke Drumel would eventually take it in from 1-yard out. Brees would make the kick making the score 24-0 with just :46 seconds left in the game.

After the ensuing kick, the Rockets were hoping that they could put any kind of points on the board to avoid the shut out. They would start from their 37 and would end on Greendale's 22 as they tried one last desperation pass into the end zone that fell incomplete.

Greendale would end up winning this game 24-0 in what was a very lack luster performance by the offense. The Panthers have been averaging about 35 points a game coming into tonight so tonight was not a good night at all. The defense, on the other hand, did a nice job forcing the Rockets to punt 6 times, and were able to keep them from scoring.

Greendale will now have to it the road for a 5-minute drive to neighboring Greenfield to play the Hawks. Greenfield is coming off of an upset victory at Whitnall last week beating them 38-33. The Panthers will need to get their offense back on track because the Hawks will be flying high. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Wind Blows Panthers Back
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/23/10

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)As a spectator watching a football game, you really don't care about the wind as long as the temperature is warm out. Football coaches, on the other hand, could care less about the temperature and worry more about the wind instead, especially if they like to pass. I have to think that the fans enjoyed their wish last Thursday night because the temperature at game time was in the mid to upper 70's. The Greendale Panther coaches, on the other hand, were not so happy because of the 20-30 mph winds. That would undoubtedly affect the turnout of the game as South Milwaukee's freshmen beat Greendale’s freshmen by a score of 27-16 at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium.

The Rockets showed up with 42-players and it was evident that they came ready to play. Greendale seemed somewhat overwhelmed during the game, which was evident by their inability to bring down this huge and talented running back that wore the number 41 on his back. He was a load and must have been related to Mike Alstott who was the big bruising running back that once played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in the day. It took 2 or more players to bring this guy down, which I have to say was impressive at this level of play.

Greendale would receive first to start the game and would have the wind at their back. They would line up for their first drive of the night on their 35. Two plays later, Greendale quarterback Chad Newton would throw a perfect pass to Nate Miller for a 56-yard scoring strike as Miller out ran the defender for what looked to be an easy score. Greendale lined up for the extra point kick but faked it as the ball was snapped directly to the kicker. That attempt failed thus making the score 6-0 and 9:35 left in the 1st quarter of play.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)After the ensuing kick, South Milwaukee would begin their first drive of the game from their 28-yard line. They would run 9-plays on the back of this #41 to take the ball all the way to Greendale's 12-yard line before looking at a 4th and goal. The Rocket quarterback would throw a screen pass to #41 who basically ran people over for a touchdown. South Milwaukee would try the point after and failed tying the score up at 6’s with 4:02 left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale would start their next drive from their 35. Disaster would hit the Panthers for on the very first play, running back Jake Zywicki would get a nice gain on a run but he would fumble giving the bale back to the Rockets on Greendale’s 46-yard line.

Nine plays later, the Rockets would grind out another touchdown as they would score with an old fashion reverse. They would go for 2 this time and converted as big number #41 would carry in off right tackle. The score was now 14-6 with 8:58 now left in the 2nd quarter.

Greendale would start their next drive after the kick from their 35 and were now heading into the wind. They could only put 5-plays together before looking at a 4th and 11 and a punting situation. Greendale almost caught a break as the Rocket's return man fumbled, but he was able to fall on it thus retaining possession on their 27-yard line. The Panthers would come up big 6-plays into the drive as they sacked the quarterback for two major losses thus bringing up a 4th and long situation and forcing the Rockets to punt the ball away.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)The Panthers would begin their drive after a nice down wind punt from their 25. The Panthers were bound and determined to pass even if it was into the stiff wind, but you could see the ball just float off target almost every time. Four plays into the drive Newton would be forced to leave the game with a slight injury so Greendale would bring in their #2 quarterback Jake Hagmayer into the game. On his first play, he would throw an interception thus giving the ball back to the Rockets at midfield.

South Milwaukee would squeeze off 3-plays before the quarterback would end up fumbling the ball back to the Panthers near the midfield stripe with just :59 seconds left in the 1st half.

The Panthers would attempt to put more points up before the half, but that would all come to an end as they would throw an interception on the Rocket's 8-yard line with just :28 seconds left in the 1st half. They would run 2-plays before just letting the clock run out for the half. The score at halftime was South Milwaukee 14, Greendale 6.

The Panthers would be kicking to start the 2nd half and would be heading into the wind once again. After a nice return, the Rocket offense would start their first drive of the half from Greendale's 46. After a big gain on their first play, the Rockets would end up fumbling as Greendale's Nate Miller would recover it on the Panther's 34.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)It was on this drive that strange things started happening. Greendale would be forced to punt going 3 and out. On the punt play, a Greendale wide out would move before the ball was snapped. Then the Rocket's return man would fumble the ball of which Greendale would recover. So at first it was though that the play would come back because of the motion penalty, but instead, the referee waived off the flag which had the Greendale bench looking at each other. Then as Greendale's offense lined up on the ball, the refs blew the whistle and decided to have a conference all of a sudden. After the conference, they decided to move the ball back to the original line of scrimmage even though the side line markers were all moved. Then the refs got a little help from the scoreboard for the original yard line information was still up so they placed the ball on the 35 and had Greendale re-kick. The only thing that was missed now was that they didn't march off the 5-yard penalty against Greendale but at this point who cared. Everything seemed out of control anyway. I have to love the thought process of the Greendale's coaches for during all of the confusion; they would call a fake punt thinking that this would be the last thing South Milwaukee would expect. Well, in theory that was good, but you still have to execute the play, which Greendale didn't do so now the Rockets would own the ball on Greendale's 47 with 7:43 left in the 3rd quarter.

Six plays later, the Rockets would cross the goal line once again from a half yard out for anther touchdown. They would line up for an apparent kick but would fake it instead as the holder rolled out to his right and threw an incomplete pass in the end zone. South Milwaukee would now increase their lead by a score of 20-6 with 6:06 left in the 3rd.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)The Panthers would start their next drive from their 20. They would be forced to punt going 3 and out.

The Rockets would now have the ball on there 49 after the return and would be relegated to punt as well going 3 and out also.

The Panthers now owned the ball on their 28 with 2:59 left in the 3rd. They would put a huge 13-play drive together that took the game into the 4th quarter. They stalled out, however, on the Rocket's 8 as they failed to score in a 4th and goal from the 8.

The Panther defense seemed to turn up the wick a bit as they were now stuffing every play. Then the Rockets tried to run their reverse play again for the 3rd time but Greendale was there and actually tackled the ball carrier in the end zone for a 2-point safety. The score was now 20-8 with 6:23 left in the game. There seemed to be a momentum change as the Rockets would now have to punt back to Greendale who now had the wind at their back.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)After a nice little return, Greendale would take over on the Rocket's 33 with 6:11 left in the game. Six plays later, Newton would score off of right guard for another Panther score. Greendale would go for 2 and convert as Newton would hit Miller a slant route for the score. Greendale was now down by only 4-points with a score of 20-16 and plenty of time left in the game.

The Rockets would now start their next drive from their 39 with 5:09 left in the game. All Greendale needed to do is make a stop and this game would get interesting real quick. Well, it got interesting alright for on the very first play, the ball would be handed off to number #41 again and he just took off running up the left side line and reached the end zone but not before running 61-yards. Panther players just seemed to bounce off of him the whole way. They would convert the extra point thus quieting the Panther faithful making the score 27-16 with 4:56 left in the game.

Greendale was not going to throw in the towel yet for there was still time, but they would need to make some big plays. Well, things went totally south for there was a fumble on the return of which Greendale was able to recover, but they were in a deep hole backed up all the way on their 9. Then on the very first play, they would throw another interception and the Rockets would take over on Greendale's 30 with 4:41 left in the game.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)The Rockets elected to keep the ball on the ground and would run 4-plays before giving it up on downs back to Greendale on the Panther's 32.

The Panthers would now put 7-plays together but ended up giving the ball up on downs back to the Rockets with 1:47 left in the game. The Panthers had guys wide open down the field pretty much the whole game, but the wind was just raising havoc too much with the passes.

The Rockets would just run 5-plays before the game would finally come to an end.

The Rockets would win by a score of 27-16. They did all of the damage on the ground behind a huge effort from number #41. The Rockets also seemed a little more physical on the field tonight, which helped them in their win.

Greendale now falls to 2-2 and will host the Greenfield Hawks next Thursday night. That game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.

Varsity Reserve

One Is Enough!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/20/10

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)Things got a little interesting for the varsity reserve football team Monday night. First of all, South Milwaukee contacted Greendale last Friday to let them know that the game will not be played at the high school field. Instead, it would be played at Hickory Park, which is about a half mile away. When I arrived at this field, I noticed first of all that this field wasn't even close to being flat. The next thing I noticed was that there was no scoreboard. Then when I looked for a bathroom, there wasn't any. Oh boy! I shouldn't have drank all of those Mountain Dews at work. You could barely see the lines, which weren't even close to being straight. In fact, depending on where the ball was on the line, you would either have a first down or you would be 4th and 3. When asked why we were playing here instead of the high school field, they said it was because their field does not handle rain very well and they didn't want the varsity reserve teams to tear it up. I guess if you have a football field, you're not supposed to use it. Greendale then offered to use their field, but they declined for some reason. Needless to say, there wasn't much that could be done so you might as well play with the cards that you were dealt with.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)At the end of the game, which had the start time moved up because of the daylight issue, Greendale escaped with a very narrow win by a score of 13-12. This by far was the poorest performance by the Panthers this year. Nonetheless, a win is a win.

Greendale would receive first to start the game. They would begin their first offensive drive of the game from their 45-yard line. They would run 4-plays before being forced to punt the ball away.

After a nice kick and some good coverage, the Rockets of South Milwaukee would start from their own 10-yard line. They would only manage 3 plays before being forced to punt from their end zone.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)After a poor punt, Greendale would be looking at a short field, as they would set up shop on the Rocket's 26. Seven plays later, Greendale quarterback Zack Henderson would take it off left tackle for the game's first score. Doug St Onge would make the point after try making the score 7-0 with 4:40 left in the 1st quarter. By the way, I had to ask the referee how much time was left on the clock the whole game. I think he hated me after a while.

South Milwaukee would start their next drive from their 30 after the ensuing kick. They would run 9-plays that took the game into the 2nd quarter before being forced to punt the ball away.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)Greendale's offense would now start their next drive from their 36. They would be forced to punt after going 3 and out.

On the return, the Rocket return man would fumble but was able to somehow recover it giving them the ball on their 49-yard line. They were only able to get 1-yard before being forced to punt once again.

Henderson would bring his gang out and line up on their 33. Once again they were forced to punt going 3 and out. This time, however, the ball sailed over the head of St Onge who was doing the punting forcing him to chase it down near his goal line. He did manage to pick it up and carry it to the Rocket's 31, but that wasn't enough for the first down so South Milwaukee was now looking at a short field.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)Greendale's defense did a nice job of stopping the Rockets forcing them into another punting situation.

It was here when lightning struck the Rockets as Greendale's Robby Blackwood would pick the ball up on his 26 and scampered 74-yards the other way for another Panther touchdown. This time St Onge would just miss the kick making the score 13-0 with 3:42 left in the 1st half.

South Milwaukee would begin their next drive on their 39. They would put 9-plays together before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 27. They would get off 3-plays before the 1st half came to an end.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers would be kicking to start the 2nd half. After the play, South Milwaukee would be starting from their 37. Five plays later, Greendale's Liam Duffy would intercept a pass giving it back to the offense on their 45.

The Rocket defense was giving the Panthers problems as they would be forced to punt going 3 and out once again.

After the kick, the Rockets would start from their 21. Four plays later, the Rockets finally broke loose up the middle as they would run a running play up the middle and scored from 45-yards out. They would line up for 2 and failed, making the score 13-6 with 3:30 left in the 3rd quarter of play.

The Rockets would then attempt an on-side kick of which Greendale was ready for. They would now take over from their 49-yard line. Six plays later, Henderson was attempting a pitch of which Mike Scheidt was unable to handle resulting in a turnover and giving the Rockets the ball on their 25-yard line. That would end the 3rd quarter with Greendale still holding on to a 13-6 lead.

Ten plays later, South Milwaukee would cross the goal line again on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. They would go for two but failed as the pass was broken up nicely in the end zone. The score was now Greendale 13 - South Milwaukee 12 with 4:17 left in the game.

The Rockets did kick the ball deep this time of which Greendale was able to return to their 35. They would survive a close call as they fumbled, but were able to recover it. Unfortunately, it was 4th down and they would have to kick the ball away anyway.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)After a poor kick, the Rockets would attempt a game winning drive as they were just 48-yards away with 2:11 left in the game. They would try 3 deep pass plays that weren't even close so now the Rockets were looking at a 4th and 10. They managed to pick up 11-yards on the following play, which was good enough for the 1st down to keep their drive alive. They now had the ball on Greendale's 37 with 1:20 left in the game. They ran 3 more plays before the Rockets called their last time out. Looking at a 3rd and 5 with :55 seconds in the game, they would run a short pass play that was short of the 1st down forcing them to go for it on 4th down. Greendale's defense came up huge on that play, as they sacked the quarterback for a 10-yard loss forcing them to turn the ball over on downs. All Greendale had to do was take a knee to end the game.

Greendale would escape with a narrow victory by a score of 13-12 to stay undefeated for the year. They are now 5-0 and will play host to the Greenfield Hawks next week at Gavinski field. That game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm

Who Would Have Thought That This Would Be A Brees!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/17/10

Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)The Greendale Panthers were finally home after playing their first 3 games on the road. They were coming off a very disappointing loss last week at the hands of the Brown Deer Falcons. They were to play their arch nemesis, the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions, which always are battles and usually draw huge crowds. These two teams just love to hate each other so they are always very close games.

Well that wasn't the case this year as Greendale, behind an amazing effort by Andrew Brees, ended up winning the game in a very convincing fashion by a score of 48-13. Eisenhower never seemed to be able to get on track, as they didn't have an answer for Greendale's high power offense. In fact all of the teams that Greendale has played thus far weren't able to stop the Panther spread attack. The question going in would be if Greendale's defense would shake off their rather poor performance from last week to help win the game. At this point, Greendale has scored 105-points which averages out to 35-points per/game which is usually enough to win. The defense has only given up 41-points so far, but unfortunately, that all happened in last week's game.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)The Lions would kick to start the game. Panther quarterback Sam Brick would set his offense up on their 25-yard line. Greendale's head coach Rob Stoltz, who calls the plays, noticed right away that Ike was playing a tight bump and run style of defense on his receivers especially on Andrew Brees who feeds off of that. Knowing what Brees and the rest of his receivers can do, he would signal in a pass play. When playing a pressing bump and run coverage, it's real important that the defenders jam the receivers on the line of scrimmage. The defenders didn't do that for some reason so Brees was able to get off the line clean and just ran by the defender. That was evident as Brees got behind the defender and Brick threw a perfect pass for a nice 75-yard scoring strike to start the game. Brees who also does the kicking chores would make the point after try and just like that, Greendale was up 7-0 just :16 seconds into the game.

After the ensuing kick, Ike would start their first drive of the game from their 23. They couldn't do anything so they had to punt going 3 and out.

After the kick and a nice turf roll, Greendale would find themselves pinned back on their 10-yard line. With a nice mix of the run and the pass, they would scale the field in 10-plays for their second touchdown of the night. Panther running back Luke "Bull-Dog" Drumel would take it in from 10-yards out capping off a 10-play 90-yard scoring drive. Brees would make his kick and Greendale was now up 14-0 with 7:22 left in the opening quarter of play.

During the following kickoff, disaster would strike for the Lions as the return man had the ball stripped by Greendale's Matt Wanezek of which "Johnny on the spot" Bobby Hall would scoop up and race 24-yards the other way for another Panther score. This time the kick would be blocked making the score 20-0 with 7:10 left in the 1st quarter.

Eisenhower would start their next drive from the 20 as a result of Brees kicking it into the end zone. They needed to stop the bleeding and quick or this game could gat out of hand real fast. Three plays later, the exact same thing would happen to them by the exact same Panther players. Wanezek would strip the ball and Hall would recover it at the midfield strip.

Six plays later, Greendale found the end zone again as Drumel would do the honors from 2-yards out. They would go for 2 but failed making the score a surprising 26-0 with 3:43 still left in the same quarter.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)The Lions would start their next drive on their 23. They would run 6-plays before being forced to punt the ball back to Greendale. Another Ike miscue would occur on this play for the punter would mishandle the ball giving it to the Panthers with another short field in front of them.

The Lions got a huge break, however, for on the very first play, Brick would throw a pass towards Brett Nethery who was forced to dive for the ball but somehow the ball bounced off his leg and right into the hands of a would-be defender.

Ike now had the ball on their 21 with :33 seconds left in the 1st quarter. They couldn't do anything again and were forced to punt going 3 and out. This time the Panthers got to the punter and blocked it giving Greendale the ball on Ike's 25-yard line.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)Five plays later, Brick would run around the left side and scamper in untouched from 6-yards out for another Panther touchdown. Brees would make his kick and the rout was on as Greendale was now on top 33-0 with 9:08 now left in the 1st half.

Greendale would now make their first major mistake of the game on the following return. Eisenhower's return man would get loose up the right side line and looked as though he would score before Brees would knock him out of bounds. To add insult to injury, he would be flagged for a late hit out of bounds, which would tack on 15 more yards. Just like that, Ike was on Greendale's 15-yard line.

Looking at their best field position of the game, Ike would now see if they could find a hole somewhere in Greendale's defense. During this drive, Greendale would suffer a couple of minor injuries as two of their top line backers in Drake BarcZack and Curtis Nelson, would have to leave the game creating the hole that Ike needed. Seven plays later, the Lions finally scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Phil Bergant. The kick was missed wide left making the score 33-6 with 5:34 left in the half.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale would now bring out their offense after the kick and start from their 23. This time they only managed 6-plays before Nethery would be called on to punt the ball away.

Eisenhower now found themselves on their 26. They ran 3-plays before looking at a 4th and 2 on their 33. In what seemed to be an act of desperation, they would go for it but the massive front line of Greendale would stuff Bergant for a loss giving Greendale another short field and plenty of time to inflict more damage.

Brick and the boys would now line up on Ike's 34. Five plays later, the coaches saw that Ike was pressing the receivers again so they would signal in another pass play. On the snap of the ball, Brees would get behind the defender and snagged another perfect pass from Brick for an 18-yard scoring strike. The extra point try was good making the score 40-6 with :22 seconds left in the first half.

Ike would take the ensuing kick and run 1-play before the 1st half would come to an end.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)The 2nd half would start with Greendale kicking first. Ike would end up starting from their 20-yard line. They finally got something going and were able to move the ball. Soon they were looking at a 4th and 8 from Greendale's 22. Bergant would take the snap and was in trouble forcing him to scramble to his right. He would then unleash a pass into the end zone where his receiver was able to catch the ball in the middle of three would-be Panther defenders for a 22-yard scoring strike. They would convert the kick making the score 40-13 with 8:17 left in the 3rd quarter.

Greendale would now start their first drive of the half from their 20. They would run 8-plays before Brick would throw an ill-advised pass that ended up in the hands of Eisenhower for an interception. After the short return, Ike now had the ball on Greendale's 46. Two plays later, the Lions would fumble again and guess who would come up with it? None other then Bobby Hall for what would be his third fumble recovery of the game.

Greendale now had the ball on their 40 and were going the other way. They couldn't do anything this time and were forced to punt the ball away. With Nethery standing on his 21-yard line, he would get off a monster kick that rolled all the way to Ike's 3 netting a total of 55-yards.

The Lions could only muster up 6-plays before having to punt once again.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)It was now in the 4th quarter with Greendale in possession of the ball on their 43. Four plays later, Brick would find Brees again who caught the ball in double coverage for a 37-yard scoring strike. While it wasn't certain who would benefit the most from the next decision, Greendale would elect to go for 2 in hopes that they could engage the 35-point running clock rule. Brick would run it in off or right tackle and convert making the score a rather lopsided 48-13 with under 10 minutes left on the now running clock.

Ike would get the ball back after the kick and start from their 19. Both teams now looked to be playing their back-up players. Ike would put a 10-play drive together before looking at a 4th and 10 from Greendale's 17. The Lion coaches sent in their field goal team to attempt the field goal. The kick was no good so Greendale would not take over on their 17-yard line.

Freshmen quarterback Zack Henderson was now in at quarterback for Greendale. He and the rest of the offense could only manage 3-plays before being forced to line up for a punt. Nethery would get the kick off but the clock would ran out during that play thus ending the game.

Greendale would win and rather convincingly at that by a score of 48-13 over Eisenhower. This takes Greendale's record 3-1 while the Lions drop to 2 and 2 for the year. Greendale will be home again next week, as they play host to the South Milwaukee Rockets for their Homecoming. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Freshmen

A Slim Win!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/16/10

Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)The freshmen Panthers finally returned home after a 2 week road swing to host the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions. In what proved to be a game of big plays, the Panthers out did the Lions by one play as they defeated the Lions 20-19 in a real nail biter. Greendale now improves their record to 2-1 with the victory.

Greendale would take the opening kick and were intercepted on the very first play. It was here that Ike made their first big play with a long pass for a touchdown. They would miss the extra point kick making the score 6-0 lead with less than a minute gone from the clock.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)Greendale would shake that punch in the mouth off on their next series as Panther quarterback Chad Newton would hook up with Gabe Kaliebe for a 40-yard touchdown strike. The Panthers were going to send out their extra point team but the kicker developed a bloody nose so they had to change out the kick team for their offense and go for 2. They did convert making the score 8-6 midway through the 1st quarter.

Later in the 1st half, Ike would score another touchdown on a short off tackle dive. They would make the point after attempt making the score 13-8 midway through the 2nd quarter.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)Greendale's offense was doing a much better job of moving the ball in the 1st half, but they always ended up turning the ball over on downs. Eisenhower, on the other hand couldn't seem to sustain any kind of drive. The score would end up being 13-8 Eisenhower, as the 1st half came to an end.

Greendale would then be the first to score in the 2nd half after a nice long drive as Newton would sneak it up the middle from 2-yards out. The try for 2 failed giving Greendale the lead by a score of 14-13 with 4:45 left in the 3rd quarter. Ike would then have to punt from midfield on their next drive.

Greendale put another nice drive together before giving the ball up on downs once again at Ike's 22-yard line with 6:27 now left in the game.

The Lions would then come back and connected with a 39-yard touchdown pass to regain the lead with 2:49 left in the game. Ike would go for 2 and failed making the score 19-14.

Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)Greendale now had their work cut out as they would start from their 37-yard line. A few plays later, Newton would find Brian Goyette down field who made an unbelievable catch for a 49-yard scoring strike. The Cats would go for 2 and fail leaving them with a slim 1-point lead by a score of 20-19 and 1:35 left in the game.

Greendale now had to keep the Lions out of the end zone to hang on for the win. The Lions looked to be moving pretty good, but the Panther D would come up big as Kaliebe would intercept an Ike pass on his 20-yard line to kill Eisenhower's chances of coming from behind for the win. All the offense had to do is take two knees to preserve the win.

Greendale would win by a score of 20-19. They will now entertain the South Milwaukee Rockets next Thursday at 5:30pm.

Did Anybody See The Defenses?
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/10/10

Greendale at Brown Deer (Varsity)For the 3rd week in a row, I had to get in my truck and take another cross-country trip. This time I got gas before I left versus white knuckling it on the way home last week as the needle on my gas gauge was firmly parked in the red zone. Then I had to deal with the retarded traffic. Are you kiddin me? There sure are a lot of people that have to get somewhere. I know where I had to go. I needed to get to Brown Deer High School to see the best of the black and the best of the blue play each other. I would be referring to the two divisions within the Woodland Conference. Greendale, represents the Black Division, and Brown Deer represents the Blue Division. Both teams were undefeated coming into the game and both teams are favorites to win their respective divisions so I knew this game should be good.

So I pay my money, take my seat and watch a game that was full of offense. OK, I paid the full price so I wanted to see some defense too. That didn't really happen because when I looked at the scoreboard at the end of the game, I discovered that there was 76 totally points scored, 41 for Brown Deer and 35 for Greendale. Needless to say the game was not boring at all. Both team's defenses seemed to have problems addressing the opposing team's offense as the Brown Deer Falcons would defeat the Greendale Panther 41-35 in overtime. The game was everything it was built up to be and more. There was a combined 928 yards of total offense which made things quite exciting and left you wondering whatever happened to both defenses? I guess the best and simplest answer is that both teams have very talented and loaded offenses. All I know is that I had a good time even though my favorite team came up short. About the only thing that would be better then that would be eating a Marco's while sitting on a deck and watching dragon flies buzz around. Anyhoo, I must apologize ahead of time for the length of this article but it's not my fault. There were to many highlights to write about. OK... here we go!

Greendale at Brown Deer (Varsity)Greendale would receive first to start the game. Their first drive of the night would begin from their 25. They would shoot themselves in the foot a few times with motion penalties and ended up punting going 3 and out.

After the Brett Nethery punt, the Falcons would start their first drive of the night on their 22-yard line. On the very first play, feature running back Chris Smith would take a handoff around the right end and zip down the field for a 78-yard touchdown run breaking 5 tackles along the way. The extra point try was good and just like that, the Falcons scored on a defense that hasn't been scored on in the first two games.

Greendale would now bring their offense and set up on their 19 after the ensuing kick. They would run 2 plays before another miscue as running back Luke Drumel would fumble giving the ball back to the Falcons on Greendale's 29-yard line.

Six plays later, Falcon quarterback Brett Youngbeck would fake a handoff and walk into the end zone from 5-yards out. The point after try was good and Greendale now found themselves trailing 14-0 with 5:04 left in the opening quarter of play.

Following the kick, the Panthers would line up and start from their 21. They finally managed to get their first 1st down of the night but 2 more motion penalties backed them up too far forcing them to punt once again.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Varsity)Brown Deer would now start from their 28 after the kick. The defense bent a little bit before forcing a fumble, but instead of just falling on it, the ball was misshandled and ended up going out of bounds. Brown Deer would maintain possession. That did hurt too bad for it was now 4th and very long so the Falcons would have to punt for the first time in the game.

Greendale would begin their next drive from their 21. Six plays later, quarterback Sam Brick who was now in for Ernie Valente, hooked up with Andrew Brees down the right side line for a 51-yard scoring strike. Brees would make the extra point try making the score 14-7 as the 1st quarter came to an end.

After the ensuing kick, the Falcons would start from their 35. Two plays later, Youngbeck would run the same play he scored on earlier and scampered 61-yards for another Falcon touchdown. The point after try was good and Brown Deer would take the score to 21-7 with 10:59 left in the 1st half.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Varsity)Brick & company would start their business from their 35 as Greendale looked to answer back. Answer back they did as they started gashing the Falcon defense with the run. Seven plays later, Brick would find Brees again in the end zone for an 8-yard scoring strike. Brees would make his kick reeling in Brown Deer with by score of 21-14 and 9:02 left in the first half.

Brown Deer would start from their 20 as a result of Brees kicking into the end zone. They would run one play before Smith would light up the Panthers again as he sprinted 76-yards for another Brown Deer touchdown. The extra point try was converted and Brown Deer now led by a score of 28-14 with 8:12 still left in the half.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Falcon kicker would slip thus causing a miss hit on the ball. It almost accidentally worked out perfect for it was like an on-side kick, but Greendale managed to steel the ball under the pile thus retained possession. As a result, they would have the ball near the midfield strip. The Panther's high powered offense would not go away for 3-plays later, Brees would make a remarkable catch reaching over the defender to move the team to the Falcon 2-yard line. On the very next play, Drumel would cross the goal line for another Panther touchdown. Brees would make the point after making the score 28-21 in what was looking to be an offensive shootout.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Varsity)Brees would reach the end zone with his kickoff so Brown Deer would start from their 20 again. Four plays later, Smith was running around the right side and lost the ball that somehow ended up in the hands of Greendale's big James Wilson who started running the other way before being brought down on Brown Deer's 39. This was a major break for the struggling defense, as they finally made a stop and gave their offense a chance to tie the game up.

With 5:00 left in the half, Greendale would begin their quest for the end zone. Two plays later, however, Brick was attempting to pass when the ball was deflected at the line of scrimmage and fell into the hands of Brown Deer on their 41-yard line.

Ten plays later, the Falcons were looking at a 4th and goal from the 5. It was here that Panther safety Peter Pekar would deliver a big hit on a receiver in the end zone that was good enough to shake the ball loose from a certain touchdown catch thus terminating that Falcon drive.

Greendale would now take over in a deep holes on their 5-yard line. They would get a little breathing room before having to punt the ball away going 3 and out. The clock would run out on that play ending the 1st half.

Brown Deer would get the ball first to start the 2nd half. Something must have been said in the Panther locker room for it looked like the defense had a serious attitude problem now. Panther Linebacker Drake BarcZack would come up big as he ran down Youngbeck for an 18-yard sack forcing the Falcons to punt from their end zone.

After the punt and the return, Greendale would be looking at a short field as they lined up on Brown Deer's 30. Seven plays later, Brick would power his way in from 3-yards out for a game tying score. Brees needed to make the kick, which he did, and the game was now tied 28-28 with 6:49 left in the 3rd.

Because of Brees, Brown Deer would start from the 20 once again. Sixteen plays and the whole 3rd quarter clock later, the Falcons would finally score from 5-yards out, as Smith would do the honors. The extra point try was good and Brown Deer would regain the lead by a score of 35-28 and 11:14 now left in the game.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Varsity)Greendale would start from their 20 for their next possession. Brown Deer hasn't really stopped the Panthers all night so it was going to get interesting here real quick. The Panthers would continue to mix the run and the pass as they moved down the field. At one point, the Panthers were looking at a 4th and 13 when Brick would find Kennedy Ringelberg who made a great catch and run good enough for a first down and keeping the Panther drive alive. That would end shortly as Greendale turned the ball over on downs on the Falcon 3-yard line thus ending a nice 16-play drive.

Brown Deer had to be careful now for any mistake here could prove costly. The defense, which is playing a lot better, forced the Falcons to punt going 3 and out.

There was now 2:43 left in the game and Greendale owned the ball on Brown Deer's 46. Two plays later, disaster would strike and the exchange between Brick and Drumel was botched causing a fumble of which Brown Deer would recover.

Greendale was now in big trouble as there was now only 2:00 minutes left in the game and they were still down by 7. The defense came through again as they forced the Falcons to punt going 3 and out. During that possession, Greendale had to burn all of their time outs to preserve as much clock as possible.

Things didn't get any easier for after the punt and the roll, Greendale would end up starting from their 5-yard line and no timeouts left. For most high school football teams, the task of going 95-yards in 1 minute can be somewhat daunting, but not for the Panthers. On the very first play, Brick would find Ringelberg down the left side line for a huge 40-pass completion. The best part about that was he ended up out of bounds so the clock would stop. Brick would find Ringelberg again for another completion and all of a sudden, Greendale was on the Falcon's 26. On the next play, Brick would find a different receiver in Brett Nethery who would catch the ball in the right flat and used his speed to get out of bounds but not before gaining 16-yards up field as well. On the next play, Brick would throw a nice touch pass over a defender to Brees for a 10-yard touchdown pass completion. All that was needed was the extra point and this game would be all tied. Brees spit the uprights as Greendale finished off a 95-yard scoring drive in just :25 seconds.

The stunned Brown Deer players were all just standing there in disbelief. There was only enough time for the Falcons to run 3-plays before the clock read zeros ending regulation play.

We are now heading into overtime. The rules are simple. A coin toss is done to determine who does what first. Ideally, you want to go on defense first because you will know what needs to be done when you have to go on offense. Each team will start from the 25-yard line and score in any way they can. Brown Deer won the toss so they went on defense first.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Varsity)Greendale would run 1-play before Brick would end up throwing an interception as he was being hit thus ending Greendale's chance at scoring. All Brown Deer needs now would be a field goal to win the game.

Well that wasn't needed for on the very first play, Smith would burn the Panther defense once again as he ran around the right side all the way to the end zone thus winning the game.

In what was nothing more then an offensive shootout, the Brown Deer Falcons would defeat the Greendale Panthers in overtime by a score of 41-35. It was very impressive how Greendale's offense never panicked as they kept answering the bell. The defense on the other hand, showed some life in the 2nd half, but a lot of damage was done in the first half that led to their demise.

Greendale will finally return home next week after being on the road for all three games they played thus far. They will play host to arch rival New Berlin Eisenhower Lions next Friday night. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Freshmen

Freshmen Win A Close One
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/9/10

Greendale at Brown Deer (Freshmen)The freshmen Panthers are coming off of a disappointing loss against Pewaukee last week and they weren't going to let that happen again as they made another cross country trip to defeat the Brown Deer Falcons 26-22 in what ended up to be a barn burner up at Brown Deer High School. They did it with special teams and their offense. Their defense did a lot of bending against the pass, but they were able to get a few turnovers and hang on for the win.

It all started right off the bat as Greendale was going to receive first. Panther return man Jake Zywicki would return the kick 65-yards all the way to the house to put the Panthers on the board first. The extra point try was no good and Greendale was out in front by a score of 6-0 with not even a minute gone from the clock.

Brown Deer would start their first drive of the night from their 20-yard line. They would only run 3-plays before having to punt the ball away.

Greendale's offense would finally get to play as they would start from their own 43. They would only get 3-plays off before having to punt the ball back to the Falcons.

Brown Deer would now start their drive from their 21-yard line. With the help of a few Greendale penalties, the Falcons would get all the way to the Panther's 34 before turning the ball over on downs.

Greendale would now rattle off 8-plays before fumbling the ball to the Falcons on Brown Deer's 26-yard line. They would squeeze off 2-plays before the 1st quarter came to an end.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Freshmen)The Falcons were looking at a 2nd and 10 to start the 2nd quarter. On the snap of the ball, the Falcon quarterback look to be setting up a screen pass when Greendale's Nate Miller would time his jump perfectly and actually intercepted the ball just 5-yards from the quarterback and somehow managed to hold on and take it to the end zone for another Panther touchdown. The Cats would go for 2 this time and succeeded as Zywicki would take a pitch from quarterback Chad Newton and scamper around the left end for a score. Greendale was now up 14-0 with 9:54 left in the 1st half.

The Falcons would start their next drive from their 34 after the ensuing kick. They would run 3-plays before lining up to punt. Brown Deer would end up faking the punt and tried to get the first down through the air, but Panther defensemen Jake Hagmayer would intercept the pass giving it back to Greendale's offense on Brown Deer's 33.

Greendale would not start moving up the field. They would run 3 plays before Newton would throw a perfect pass to Miller who took it to the house for a 34-yard scoring strike. Greendale would go for 2 but failed making the score 20-0 with 7:25 left in the first half.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Freshmen)After the ensuing kick, Brown Deer would start from their 41. They would run 3 plays before looking at a 4th and 6 from their 45. They ended up getting their first down by way of a 30-yard pass completion. Five plays later, the Falcon quarterback would sneak it up the middle from 2-yards out for their first points of the night. They would go for 2 and fail making the score 20-6 with 2:35 left in the half.

Greendale would start their next drive from their 43. They would put 7-plays together before they were intercepted with just :05 seconds left in the half.

Brown Deer owned the ball on their 17 with just enough time for 1-play. It actually ended up being 2-plays as their quarterback was hit late out of bounds causing the yellow flags to fly. The period cannot end on a defensive penalty so Brown Deer would get 1 more un-timed down. They ran that play and were stopped thus finally ending the 1st half of play, as Greendale would be on top 20-6.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Freshmen)Greendale would be kicking to open the 2nd half. The special teams would cover the kick forcing the Falcons to start from their 33-yard line. They would only manage 3-plays before being forced to punt the ball away. It was here where another big special teams play occurred. Greendale's Mitchell Brees would receive the punt and return it 46-yards up the left sideline for another Panther touchdown. Greendale would try for 2 and failed again making the score 26-6 with 8:25 left in the 3rd quarter.

Following the kick, the Falcons would start their next drive from their 29-yard line. They would run 6-plays before they were looking at a 4th and 25. Instead of punting the ball, they left their offense in and converted the 1st down with a 35-yard pass completion to keep their drive alive. There were now looking at a 1st and 10 from Greendale's 42. Greendale would dodge a bullet for three plays later, Brown Deer looked to have scored with a 35-yard pass play, but it was called back because there were offensive linemen down field. That is a automatic loss of down so the Falcons were now looking at a 4th and 10 from Greendale's 29. Greendale didn't get out of the way of the next bullet, as Brown Deer would complete a pass to the end zone for their second touchdown of the night. They would go for 2 and convert making the score 26-14 with 1:55 left in the 3rd.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Freshmen)Greendale would start their next drive from their 45. They would run 7-plays before the 3rd quarter would finally come to an end. On the very next play, Newton would have to leave the game with a minor leg injury so Greendale would bring in their number 2 quarterback Colin Butkiewicz to run the offense. He managed to get the team down to the Brown Deer 10-yard line. That would be as close as they would get as they turned the ball over on downs at the Falcon's 11.

There was now 7:35 left in the game as Brown Deer reverted to their passing game of which Greendale was having trouble defending. Ten pass plays later, Brown Deer finally scored with a 13-yard pass for their third touchdown of the game. The Falcons would go for 2 and convert again narrowing Greendale's margin by a score of 26-22 with 4:12 left in the game.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Freshmen)Greendale would start their next drive from their 32. They would run 2-plays before Butkiewicz would have to leave the game with an injury so Greendale was now sending in their 3rd quarterback Jake Hagmayer. Greendale was now looking at a 3rd and long when Hagmayer took off running for a huge gain keeping Greendale's drive alive. They now had the ball on Brown Deer's 38 with 3:15 left in the game. Greendale need to make sure that they did not give Brown Deer the ball back for they were having a lot of success passing so it was very important to keep possession on the ball. Of course things had to get interesting as they ended up fumbling twice pushing them back into their side of the field on their 43 with 2:30 left on the clock. Brown Deer was out of time outs already so Greendale was doing all they could to take the time off the clock. It was now 4th and a mile and Greendale had to line up for a punt with 1:01 left in the game.

Greendale at Brown Deer (Freshmen)After the punt, Brown Deer would be starting their drive from their 21 with :52 left on the clock. They would run 3-plays before Greendale's Gabe Kaliebe would come up big and intercept the ball on Brown Deer's 45.

With :12 left on the clock, all Greendale had to do was take a knee and the game was over.

The final score was Greendale 26 – Brown Deer 22. The 1-1 Panthers will now return home next week, as they will play host to the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions at Gavinski field. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30.

Varsity Reserve

A Windy Win!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/7/10

Brown Deer @ Greendale (varsity reserve)It was interesting when I looked out of the window from my office Tuesday and watched road signs move, barrels fall over, trees bending, and leaves racing across the lawn. Because I am in a very solid soundproof building with thick windows, I had no sense of the severity of the wind that was causing these things to happen. Then my day was over and I had to get over to the football field to checkout the varsity reserve game between Greendale and Brown Deer. As soon as I stepped outside, I was greeted with a wind that actually made it difficult for me to walk to my truck. Then I'm thinking that the football game will even be more interesting with a wind like this.

Well, there were some interesting things that happened as a result of the wind during the game but it didn't seem to affect Greendale as they overwhelmed the Brown Deer Falcons by a score of 32-0 at Stephen J. Gavinski Memorial Stadium. It was a total effort by the Panthers offense, defense, and special teams that help contribute to their 3rd win of the season.

Because of the wind, strategies would come into play with the coin toss. Brown Deer won the toss and deferred so that meant that Greendale had their pick on whether to kick or receive. They chose the later, which meant that Brown Deer go take the wind.

The Panthers would bring their offense out first and start from their 39-yard line after the poor kick with the wind. They put a nice 11-play ground pounding drive together and managed to get to the Falcon 16 before turning the ball over on downs to Brown Deer.

Brown Deer @ Greendale (varsity reserve)Now it was the Falcon's turn on offense. Things went sour right away as they were sacked for a 5-yards loss by a very aggressive Panther defense. Then on their second play, they would fumble of which Greendale's Matt Friede would recover on the Falcon's 11-yard line.

Two plays later, Panther quarterback Zack Henderson would power his way into the end zone from 5-yards out for the game's first score. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful resulting in a score of 6-0 with 3:56 left in the 1st quarter of play.

Brown Deer would take the ensuing kick and start their next drive from their 30. They were forced to punt, however, after going 3 and out.

After the punt, the Panthers would end up starting from deep in a hole on their 10-yard line. Because of the strong wind, they were pretty much stuck running the ball, which they were having success in doing. They put 4-plays together picking up two first downs along the way before the 1st quarter would come to an end. Well if you are a Panther fan, you know what that means. It means that the wind is now at their back and that they can pop the top off of their passing game. Well that was the case for on the very first play of the 2nd quarter, Henderson would hook up with Gaelan Seibold for a 69-yard scoring strike as Seibold just ran past the defender and made a perfect catch from a perfect pass. The try for 2-points was good as Panther running back Mike Scheidt would run it in for the points. The scoreboard now showed Greendale on top 14-0 with 9:50 left in the 1st half.

Again the Panther defense would force the Falcons to punt going 3 and out.

Brown Deer @ Greendale (varsity reserve)This time Greendale would start from mid field. They reverted back to the run and would be looking at a 4th and 6. They decided to go for it as Scheidt would get the necessary yards to move the sticks. Two plays later, Scheidt would take a pitch from Henderson and scamper around left end into the end zone from 11-yards out for the Panther's 3rd TD of the night. Doug St. Onge would attempt the extra point kick only to have it blocked. The score was now 20-0 Greendale, with 6:44 left in the half.

Brown Deer who was still looking for their first 1st down, would start from their 27. This time they managed to put 5-plays together picking up one 1st down along the way before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 46.

The Panthers would now begin their quest for the end zone but failed to do so as Scheidt would fumble on their fifth play of the drive giving the ball back to Brown Deer on their 19-yard line.

Brown Deer @ Greendale (varsity reserve)The Panther defense forced the Falcons to punt once again as they went 3 and out.

The next Panther drive would start from their 30 but was short lived as Henderson threw an interception with less then 2 minutes left in the 1st half of play.

Never fear, however, for the Cat's defense would force another 3 and out against the Birds.

With :39 seconds left, Henderson would end up throwing another interception that almost looked like was going to be returned for a touchdown, but a tackle was finally made on their 21.

Brown Deer would run 3-plays before the clock finally ran out for the half.

Brown Deer @ Greendale (varsity reserve)The Falcons would receive to start the 2nd half. They would be heading into the wind so that they would have the wind for the 4th quarter. They repeated what hey have done several times earlier. They ran 3-plays before having to punt the ball away.

With the wind at their back, Greendale would start their first drive of the half from their own 45-yard line. Nine plays later, Henderson would roll out right and find St. Onge in the end zone for a 8-yard scoring strike. The try for 2-points failed increasing the Panther's lead by a score of 26-0 and 5:36 left in the 3rd quarter.

St. Onge would get off a nice kick and ride the wind as Brown Deer would start their next drive deep in a hole on their 10-yard line. They ran 3-plays and were looking at a 4th at 4. For some reason, they decided to go for it and failed, which gave Greendale a very short field to work with.

With the ball resting on Brown Deer's 13, it would only take 1-play for Greendale to reach the zone again as Scheidt would run up the middle from 13-yards out. The try for 2 again would fail making the score 32-0 with 4:01 left in the 3rd.

Brown Deer @ Greendale (varsity reserve)It was becoming real apparent that the defensive front represented by Matt Beard, Akil Huggins, Ben White, Mason Johnson, and Alex Kay, were controlling the line of scrimmage. This takes the pressure off of the defensive backs who always have to worry about runs coming there way. Now they just have to concentrate on covering the receivers' instead.

That trend would continue on as the Falcons were forced to punt after 3 plays again.

Greendale would now start their next drive from Brown Deer's 36. They would get all the way to the Falcon 16 before turning the ball over on downs back to Brown Deer as it was now in the 4th quarter.

This time the Falcons would string 5-plays together before Panther defensive back Robbie Blackwood would hit the ball carrier causing him to fumble of which Josh Wicks would recover. Greendale now owned the ball on their 45-yard line.

This time the offense would end up turning the ball over on downs after 4-plays near midfield.

Brown Deer @ Greendale (varsity reserve)With the wind now at their backs, the Falcons would squeeze off 3-plays before Friede would intercept a pass and return it 25-yards to the Brown Deer 37.

Greendale would fumble 2-plays later as Henderson had a little trouble handling the snap.

Brown Deer would run the 3-play then punt play, as they failed to get the necessary yardage for a first down.

On the next series, all Greendale needed to do was take a knee and the game was finally over.

The final score was Greendale 32- Brown Deer 0. This is the varsity reserve's 3rd straight victory taking there record to 3-0 for the season. They will finally leave the friendly confines of home next week as they will play the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions next Monday night. The game is slated to start at 5:30pm.

Varsity

1 - 2 - 3 - DOMINATE!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/3/10

Greendale at Pewaukee (Varsity)It was billed as the "Game Of The Week". The Greendale Panthers and the Pewaukee Pirates. Two programs that hold a rich tradition of quality high school football in the state of Wisconsin. While everyone was thinking that this would be a war, it ended up being more of a walk in the park for lack of a better term, as Greendale would snap Pewaukee's 19 conference game winning streak by shutting them out 33-0 at Feuerstine Field in Pewaukee. In case anyone was wondering, Greendale has the record for a conference winning streak at 28 consecutive games.

Plain and simple, the game was determined up front as Greendale seemed way more physical then the young Pirates. This, by the way, is something to keep in mind next year. The Pirates are coming off of a Conference Championship last season and were hit very hard by graduation leaving them with a younger and inexperienced team. That will of course change next year, as they will then be older and more experienced. That's just the way high school football is.

Greendale held the Pirates to just 122-yards of total offense and forced 4 interceptions, which usually isn't going to win a game. Greendale, on the other hand had a total of 298-yards of offense with just one interception. This is also the second time in as many games that Greendale has not given up a point.

The Panthers would be receiving first to start the game. After a nice return by Jo Jo Sardina, they would start their first drive of the game from their 26-yard line. They seemed a little anxious for some reason as they committed a few silly penalties that put them deep in a hole. Looking at a third and 20, they would quick kick catching Pewaukee without and deep return man. This move paid dividends as quarterback Ernie Valente would get 57-yards after the roll.

The Pirates would now start their first drive of the night from their 18. The stingy Panther defense would force Pewaukee to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale at Pewaukee (Varsity)Greendale would now line up on offense after the kick on there own 33. They seemed to have settled down this time as they marched 67-yards in 6-plays for the game's first score as running back Luke Drumel would carry it in from 3-yards out. Kicker Andrew Brees would split the uprights making the score 7-0 with 6:19 left in the 1st quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Brees would reach the end zone forcing Pewaukee to start from their 20. Three plays later, Panther defensive back Sardina would intercept a Pewaukee pass and return it to the Pirate's 20-yard line.

On the very first play, Valente would connect with Brees on a fade route in the left corner of the end zone for Greendale's second touchdown of the night. Brees would have a rare miss on the point after try making the score 13-0 with 5:15 left in the opening quarter of play.

Again Brees would reach the end zone and again Pewaukee would have to start from their 20. This time they managed 8-plays before the Panther defense stiffened up and forced the Pirates to punt the ball away.

With just under a minute left in the 1st quarter, Valente & company would line up on their 21-yard line. This time they failed to get a 1st down and were forced to punt back to the Pirates.

Greendale at Pewaukee (Varsity)Pewaukee would begin their drive from their 44. They ended up stringing 8-plays together before turning the ball over on downs at Greendale’s 21.

The Panther offense could only put 6-plays together before calling on Brett Nethery to punt the ball away. At this point, the skies opened as it started to rain.

Pewaukee would start this drive from their own 39. Greendale's defense seemed to be getting stronger and stronger as they logged in two tackles for losses thus forcing Pewaukee to kick once again after 3-plays.

Greendale now would take possession on their 32. They would fall victim to their own mistakes again and decided to quick kick on 3rd down.

Pewaukee now owned the ball on their 26 as the rain continued to fall. Two plays later, Panther linebacker Drake BarcZack would intercept a pass on a huge effort giving the ball right back to his offense on Pewaukee's 31-yard line.

Greendale at Pewaukee (Varsity)Three plays later, Greendale would make Pewaukee pay as Valente would power his way in from 7-yards out for their third touchdown of the game. The Panthers would try for 2 but came up short making the score 19-0 with just :57 seconds left in the 1st half.

The Pirates would just run two plays following the kick before the clock finally ran out.

Greendale would kick to open the 2nd half. The special teams sure looked hungry as they hustled down to drop the return man on Pewaukee's 11-yard line. Two plays later, BarcZack would pick off his second pass of the night. Greendale was now looking at a short field as they would start from the 24.

Greendale at Pewaukee (Varsity)The Panthers would only manage 3-plays before turning the ball over on downs on the Pirates 17.

The struggling Pirate offense was still trying to find a way to move the ball. It was becoming real apparent that the Panther's defense was just too physical as they forced Pewaukee to kick going 3 and out again.

With the wind and the rain still coming down, Greendale would take over on their 47. They would be forced to kick, however, going 3 and out as well.

Nethery would pin Pewaukee deep as they would have to start from their 18. On the very next play, Sardina would get his second interception of the night giving the ball right back to the offense on Pewaukee’s 33-yard line.

Three plays later, Valente would throw his one and only interception of the night as the pass fell into the wrong hands in the end zone.

Pewaukee has yet to cross the 50-yard line in this half and would fail to do so on this drive as they ended up turning the ball over on downs on the Pirate 40.

The Panthers looked to be threatening again when Valente was forced to leave the game with a minor ankle sprain. Backup quarterback Sam Brick would now come in and drive the bus. He managed to get the offense to the Pirate's 15 where they were looking at a 4th and 12. The coaches sent out the field goal unit but then called a timeout for some reason. After the timeout, the offensive unit would come out instead as they changed their mind and decided to go for it. On the snap of the ball, Brick would roll to his right and connect with Brees who made a great catch at the 1-yard line, which was enough for the 1st down. On the very next play, the dagger would be inserted, as Drumel would power his way off left tackle for another Panther touchdown. Brees would make the point after try giving the Panthers a comfortable lead by a score of 26-0 with 11:05 now left in the game.

The Panther's kick coverage team did another outstanding job as they tackled the return man on the Pirate's 15. Three plays later, Pewaukee found themselves lining up for a punt in their own end zone as Panther linebacker Jordan Campbell came in untouched and smothered the quarterback for a major loss.

Brick would now line the offense up on their 41 after the ensuing punt. They would run 3-plays before Brick would take it himself on a keeper and zigzagged his way 43-yards for Greendale's fifth touchdown of the night. Brees would convert the point after try and the score was now a lopsided 33-0 with 7:29 left in the game.

The Pirates who just looked to be manhandled, would start from their 30 after the ensuing kick. They were forced to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale at Pewaukee (Varsity)Greendale was now starting to send in their backup players. They managed 6-plays before being forced to punt from midfield.

Nethery's kick would again pin them deep as the Pirates who spent the whole 2nd half on their side of the field would start from their 11. They would string 6-plays together before the clock finally ran out.

The final score would end up Greendale 33 – Pewaukee 0. This would snap Pewaukee's 19-game conference winning streak and put Greendale in a three-way tie for first place with Whitnall and Eisenhower. The Panthers will now take to the road for the third straight time, as they will play Brown Deer next Friday night. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Freshmen

A Not So Good Start!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/2/10

Greendale at Pewaukee (freshmen)The 2010 freshmen football season began Thursday evening at Feuerstine Field on the friendly confines of Pewaukee High School but the results were not what they wanted. They ended up on the short end of the score losing to the Pewaukee Pirates 35-0.

OK... I have to first apologize to the freshmen football fans for I was planning on covering the game just as I always have in the past. Unbeknownst to me, the starting time of the game was moved up an hour so I ended up missing the 1st half.

As I arrived, I managed to talk to the coaches and they told me that there wasn't much to talk about in the first half. It sounded like there were just a lot of mistakes that hurt the Panther's effort. I was also informed that Pewaukee's offense scored on every possession, which accounted for the 28 points that were on the scoreboard so needless to say, the score at half time was Pewaukee 28, Greendale 0.

Greendale at Pewaukee (freshmen)So far, I was an hour late, I couldn't find a parking spot because there was a youth scrimmage going on so their parking lot looked like Southridge during the opening day of Christmas shopping, the mosquitoes were feasting on my legs, and then it started to rain. UGH!

At least I was able to cover the 2nd half. Greendale would be kicking to start the half. It didn't take long for Pewaukee to pick up right where they left off as the returned that kick 65-yards for a touchdown. Pewaukee would convert the extra point try making the score 35-0 Pewaukee, with 9:50 left in the 3rd quarter.

Greendale at Pewaukee (freshmen)Because of the 35-point rule, the clock would now run continuous and only stop for a time out or an injury. Greendale would start their first drive of the half from Pewaukee's 48-yard line after a nice return. The Panthers would then hookup a 30-yard pass completion and looked to be threatening. On the very next play, they would end up in the end zone, but there was a flag thus nullifying the touchdown. On the next play after that, they would fumble of which Pewaukee would recover on their own 10-yard line.

The Pirates would run 6-plays before they fumbled back to Greendale.

The Panthers had the ball on Pewaukee's 30 but they gave it up up on downs after 4-plays.

Pewaukee's offense would now set up on their 26. They ran 1-play before the 3rd quarter would come to an end. Two plays later, they would be intercepted by Greendale on Pewaukee's 27-yard line.

Greendale at Pewaukee (freshmen)The Panther offense was trying to get something going, but 6-plays later they would be intercepted of which was returned 98-yards for an apparent touchdown, but it would be called back for a block in the back penalty so Pewaukee ended up starting back on their 20 instead.

The Pirates would run 4-plays before being forced to punt the ball back to the struggling Panthers.

By virtue of the running clock, Greendale managed just 2-plays before the game finally came to an end.

The Panthers will have to write this one off as a learning experience for they have to play another game next Thursday evening at Brown Deer. OH! That game will start at 5:30 and I WILL be there on time!

Varsity Reserve

2 And 0 - And On A Roll!
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/30/10

Pewaukee at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The varsity reserve Panthers returned to the home turf Monday night as they would entertain the Pewaukee Pirates for their 2nd game of the season. Pewaukee is a member of our conference, but they are a member of the Blue Division where as Greendale is a member of the Black Division. What determines the divisions are the school enrollments. The Black Division are the bigger schools while the Blue Division are the smaller schools. In any case, it doesn't really matter because each school can only play 11 players on the field at one time so in essence, everything is equal at the end of the day.

When it was all said and done, the Panthers defeated the Pirates by a score of 32-19 on a beautiful evening at Greendale's Stephen J. Gavinski Memorial Field. You know what the best part about playing at Greendale is? There are no mosquitoes! Apparently, the artificial turf isn't the same as the grass, which is where they like to hang out. If they ever decided to like rubber, then we would be in big trouble.

Greendale won the toss and wanted to receive first to start the game. They would begin their quest for the end zone from their 34-yard line. Things didn't go to well right off the bat for on their second play from scrimmage, Panther quarter back Sam Brick would be intercepted on the Pirates 31-yard line.

Pewaukee would bring their offense out and put together a 8-play drive before eventually being forced to punt the ball away.

The Panthers would then give it a try, but they too had to punt after stringing 6-plays together too.

The trend finally changed on Pewaukee's next series. They would run 5-plays before one of their running backs broke lose around their right end and scampered 53-yards for the game's first score of the evening. The extra point kick sailed wide right making the score 6-0 Pewaukee, with 1:45 left in the 1st quarter.

Pewaukee at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would take their turn on offense as they lined up on their 29 after the ensuing kick. They only could hook up for 4-plays before Doug St. Onge would have to punt the ball away again.

The Pirates would start their drive from their own 33. They ran 2-plays before the first quarter would come to an end. The Panther's defense must have had something said to them because when the game resumed, they had 3 consecutive tackles for losses eventually forcing the Pirates to turn the ball over on downs deep in Panther territory.

Greendale's offense finally got the show going on their next drive. They ran 7-plays picking up 4 first downs along the way before Brick would pitch the ball to Mike Scheidt who zigzagged his way 25-yards for the Panther's first touchdown of the game. This ended up being a 7-play 78-yard scoring drive. The extra point kick was blocked leaving the score tied at 6-6 with 5:28 left in the 1st half.

Pewaukee would start their next drive from their 36-yard line. On their very first play, Greendale's David Michaels would intercept a pass at midfield giving the ball right back to the offense who were all still hanging out by the water buggy.

It only took Greendale 4-plays to reach the zone as Brick would take it in off right tackle from 2-yards out. Brick would call his number again for the 2-point try and was successful making the score 14-6 Greendale, with 4:41 left in the half.

Pewaukee at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Pewaukee again put another nice drive together, but 7-plays later they would have to punt the ball away.

With less than 2 minutes left in the half, the Panthers would start from their 30-yard line. They only ran 4-plays before having to punt back to the Pirates.

The Pirates would end up starting from midfield with just :53 seconds left. They managed one first down before Greendale's Kenan Goyette intercepted the ball as the clock zeroed out to end the 1st half.

Greendale would have to kick to open the 2nd half. Pewaukee would start their first drive of the half from their 27. The Panthers would force them to punt after they failed to gain the necessary 10-yards for a first down.

Pewaukee at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would come up big on the return as return specialist Robby Blackwood would take the ball up the left sideline for a 60-yard touchdown jaunt. The extra point kick would be blocked increasing Greendale's led by a score of 20-6 with 8:12 left in the 3rd quarter.

The next Pirate drive would be full of ups and downs because right off the bat, they would rip off a huge 40-yard run. Then the Panthers would have 3 consecutive tackles for losses forcing the Pirates to a 4th and 20 situation. On that play, they would complete a pass all the way to the 5-yard line, which was enough for the first down. Two plays later, they would cross the goal line for their second touchdown of the game. The extra point kick was good making the score 20-13 Greendale, with 4:36 left in the 3rd.

Greendale would line their offense up on their 33 after the ensuing kick. On the second play of that drive, Scheidt would receive a pitch and take of up field for a nice 40-yard gain. Brick would add another nice 20-yard run to that and all of a sudden, the Panthers were on the 6-yard line. Brick would keep the ball and take it over the goal line from 6-yards out for the Panther's fourth touchdown of the night. The 2-point try was no good making the score 26-13 Greendale, with 2:54 left in the 3rd.

Pewaukee at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Pewaukee would start their next drive following a nice return on their 40-yard line. They would have to punt after 5-plays as the Panthers were raising havoc all over the Pewaukee backfield.

It was now the 4th quarter as Greendale owned the ball on their 37-yard line. Freshmen Jake Henderson was now in at quarterback. He would take his offense on a 7-play drive before throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Michaels for another Panther touchdown. Henderson would then call his number for the 2-point try, but was stopped short making the score 32-13 Greendale with 7:20 left in the game.

Pewaukee at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Pirates would start their following drive on their 29. They would put a nice 11-play drive together before eventually turning the ball over on downs just 5-yards short of the goal line.

With 5:00 left in the game, Greendale would attempt to crawl out of the hole. They managed to get close to mid field in 7-plays before running back Pancho Villa fumbled the ball of which a defender would scoop up and take it all the way to the Panther's 5 before Gaelan Seibold would hustle down and pushed the runner out of bounds.

Pewaukee at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)One play later, Pewaukee would cross the goal line for a Pirate touchdown. The pass attempt for the 2-point conversion fell incomplete resulting in a score of 32-19 Greendale, with 1:23 left in the game.

The Pirates would attempt an on-side kick which failed giving the ball to Greendale near midfield. Greendale would only need to run 2-plays before the clock said zeros.

Greendale would end up winning the game by a score of 32-19. They will be home again next week as they will host the Brown Deer Falcons. The game is scheduled for Tuesday September 7th at 5:30pm.

Varsity Reserve Take Home Opener
R.A. Mattrisch - 8/27/10

Campbellsport at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)There is nothing like "Home Sweet Home" aka: Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium. Especially after the long haul from the night before when the varsity had to take a huge trip out to Campbellsport. I know I didn't mind because for this game, it only took me 6 minutes to get too. So what game are we talking about? We are talking about the varsity reserve's season home opener against the Cougars of Campbellsport. When it was all said and done, the Panther's varsity reserve team was victorious as they defeated Campbellsport 30 to 20 last Friday afternoon here in Greendale.

Greendale won the toss and elected to receive. They would start their first drive from their 22-yard line as freshmen quarterback Zack Henderson would line up behind center. They managed only 3-plays before being forced to put the ball away.

Campbellsport at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Cougars would start their first drive of the game from their 48-yard line. Ten plays later they would find the end zone as the quarterback would sneak it in from 1-yard out. They would try a 2-point conversion and fail making the score 6-0 with 4:02 left in the first quarter of play.

The Panthers would start their next drive from the 20 as Campbellsport's kicker kicked the ball into the end zone. They put 5-plays together before turning the ball over on downs at the Cougar 27.

Campbellsport then put a 4-play drive together before they too ended up turning the ball over on downs at Greendale's 27-yard line.

Campbellsport at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers ran 1-play before the 1st quarter came to an end. As the clock started for the 2nd quarter, Greendale would run 4-plays before running back Poncho Villa broke loose with a 55-yard touchdown run. Doug St. Onge would convert the point after try giving the Panthers the lead 7-6 with 7:25 left in the 1st half.

After the ensuing kick, the Cougars would start their next drive from their 31. They ran 4-plays before fumbling a pitch attempt. Greendale's David Michaels would recover the ball giving it back to the offense on there own 45-yard line. The offense only managed 4-plays before giving the ball up on downs at the Campbellsport 47-yard line.

On the Cougar's first play of the drive, they would complete a 53-yard scoring strike as the quarterback connected with a nice pass over the middle. This time they would convert the 2-point try giving the Cougars the lead back by a score of 14-7 and 4:51 left in the half.

It didn't take Greendale long to answer the bell for on the following position, Henderson would take off up the middle on a quarterback keeper and raced 47-yards for a Panther score. St. Onge would make his kick tying the game up at 14's with just under 4 minutes left in the half.

The Panther's defense started to engage as they forced the Cougars to 3 and out on their following drive.

Greendale took position of the ball with 2:54 left and ran 5-plays before Henderson would be intercepted.

The Cougars now had the ball at midfield when Greendale's Matt Friede drop the quarterback for a major loss. They managed 2 more plays before the 1st half came to an end.

Campbellsport at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers would kick to open the 2nd half. On the Cougars very first play, they would fumble another pitch of which Greendale's Ryan Kopczynski would recover on the Cougar's 28-yard line. Seven plays later, Henderson would power his way up the middle from 2-yards out for a Panther touchdown. Greendale would line up for the extra point kick, but the snap ended up rolling back so the kicker St. Onge, picked the ball up and managed to run into the end zone for an impromptu 2-point conversion. Greendale now had the lead by a score of 22-14 with 5:47 left in the 3rd.

Things got a little more defensive by both teams at this point. The Cougars went 3 and out, the Panthers ran 5-plays before turning the ball over on downs and then The Cougars ran 5-plays before being forced to punt.

It was now the 4th quarter and Greendale had possession of the ball. Henderson would soon cross the goal line once again from 7-yards out completing a 4-play 54-yard scoring drive. The attempted extra point kick was no good as the ball was poorly snapped back to the holder. The score was now 28-14 Greendale with 8:53 left in the game.

Campbellsport at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Campbellsport would start their next drive from their own 38. The Panther defense was all jacked up now and ended up pushing the Cougars 25-yards back and forced them to line up for a punt in the end zone. The punter ended up fumbling the snap and had no choice but to run. And run he did for he took off up the field and zigzagged his way all the way to Greendale's 10-yard line completing a 95-yard run. Two plays later, they would score a touchdown with a 2-yard run. The try for the 2-point conversion failed as the attempted pass feel short of the mark. The score was now 28-20 Greendale, with 6:00 left in the game.

Greendale would start their next drive from their own 19. They rattled off 8-plays before turning the ball over on downs at the Cougar 32.

The Cougars would end up turning the ball over on downs after 4-plays.

Campbellsport at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greendale did the same thing after the same amount of plays.

The Cougars now would start a drive from deep in a hole on their 8. On their first play from scrimmage, Friede would make another defensive play and tackled the quarterback in the end zone for a 2-point safety. The score was now Greendale 30 - Campbellsport 20 with just :38 seconds left in the game.

Following the free kick, Greendale only needed to take a knee to end the game. Greendale would win the game by a score or 30-20. They will now entertain the Pewaukee Pirates Monday night (8/30) at home. The game is to start at 5:30pm.

Panthers Victorious In Season Opener Over The Cougars!
R.A Mattrisch - 8/26/10

Greendale at Campbellsport (Varsity)Finally! The high school football season is finally here. The first thing that I did in the morning was hang my brand new Greendale Panther flag out on the house. I then had to go into work early because someone made arrangements for Greendale to play Campbellsport for their first game. While I was at work, I had to look up Campbellsport on the map to see where it is. Oh boy... it was out there a ways.

I thought I better leave work a little early because I figured that the traffic would be bad on the interstate, which it was. All I knew was that I couldn't be late or I would get fired from my website reporting job. I finally got up to freeway speeds around Capital Drive. Soon I noticed that the traffic was now getting thinner. As I reached Hwy 45, it was apparent that I wasn't in Kansas anymore as the presence of farm fields and barns were peppered along the countryside. I did have one close call with a dead raccoon in the middle of the road, but my expert driving skills came into play as I was able to miss it and avoid a potential mess.

Needless to say, it ended up being one of the prettiest drives I have taken in a long time. The only thing that I did come across was this smell. All I know is that it sure didn't smell like a freshly brewed pot of coffee. Finally I reached my destination. The whole drive ended up being about 70 minutes, which wasn't too bad. I do have to say that I was very impressed with Campbellsport's high school. It was a lot bigger then I would have thought and it almost seemed new. I'm not sure how old it really is but it was obvious that it was very well maintained. I managed to find the team bus and then parked my truck. They have a beautiful football field nestled in the back of their school that has the stands actually built into a hill. The backdrop was that of a tree line and farm fields. All I know it that I liked what I've seen thus far. Now all we have to do is win a football game and it will be the perfect day.

OH YEAH! Here is my game report.

Greendale at Campbellsport (Varsity)Greendale won the toss and elected to receive first to start the game. After a nice return by senior Jo Jo Sardina, the Panthers would begin their first drive of the season from their own 28 yard-line. The Panther's spread offense, under the direction of senior quarterback Ernie Valente, would take to the field to see what they could do. The spread attack, which is geared more for passing looked more like a running offense because 11 running plays later, Senior running back Luke Drumel would cross the goal line from 2-yards out giving the Panthers their first touchdown of the year. Senior kicker Andrew Brees would make the point after try giving Greendale an early lead by a score of 7-0 with 6:46 left in the opening quarter of play.

After the ensuing kick, the Cougars of Campbellsport would start their first drive of the year from their own 35-yard line. The Panther's defense flexed their muscle right off the bat as they forced the Cougars to 3 and out after only allowing 1-yard.

Greendale would start their next drive from their own 32-yard line after the punt. They managed 7-plays before junior punter Brett Nethery would be called on to punt the ball away.

After a nice kick, Campbellsport would start their next drive from their 9-yard line. Again, the stout Panther defense forced another punt after 3-plays. Brees would take that kick and return it 35-yards to the Cougar 16 as the 1st quarter came to an end.

Looking at a short field, it would only take 2-plays for the Cats to hit pay dirt as Valente would scamper in from 12-yards out. Brees would make the point after making the score 14-0 with 11:18 left in the 1st half.

Greendale at Campbellsport (Varsity)Campbellsport would start their next drive from their 20-yard line as Brees kicked it into the end zone. The Cougars were still looking for their first 1st down of the night, which looked like wasn't going to happen as they were forced to line up for another punt. This time, however, the Panthers would collide with the punter bringing out the yellow flags and breathing new life into the Cougars. The Panthers came out and repeated their earlier performances by forcing them to line up for another punt after 3-plays once again.

Valente would set his offense up on the Cougar's 44-yard line. Two plays later, Valente would be intercepted on the Cougar's 14 thus ending that drive.

This time, Campbellsport's offense would finally engage as they strung 9-plays together taking the ball all the way to the Panther's 29 before giving the ball up on downs.

With 5:11 left in the 1st half, Greendale would take to the field once again. Ten plays later, they would reach the Promised Land as Brees would catch a Valente pass and stretch over the goal line completing a 7-yard scoring strike. Brees would split the uprights increasing their lead by a score of 21-0 with :56 left in the 1st half. The Cougars would squeeze off 3-plays before the half finally came to an end.

Greendale would kick to start the 2nd half. The Cougar's would begin their first drive of the half from their 25-yard line. Their struggling offense could only muster up 8-plays before being forced to punt once again.

Greendale at Campbellsport (Varsity)After a poor punt, Greendale would set up shop on their own 38. With a nice mix of the run and the pass, they would put 9-plays together before Nethery apparently fumbled the ball after a catch. This seemed to be a questionable call for it looked like he was down but nonetheless, the officials made the call and it was now Campbellsport's ball on their own 4-yard line.

The Panther's defense seemed a little upset about the call and took their wrath out on the Cougar's offense. They stuffed them for two straight losses before senior Jordan Campbell would smoother their running back in the end zone for a 2-point safety. The score was now 23-0 with 7:00 left in the 3rd.

After the ensuing free kick, Greendale would start their next drive from their own 48-yard line. Nine plays later, it appeared that Drumel had himself another touchdown, but it was called back by a holding penalty. Three plays later, however, Drumel crossed the line again from 3-yards out capping off a 12-plays scoring drive. Brees would make the kick thus blowing this game wide open with a score of 30-0 and 2:10 still left in the 3rd quarter.

Greendale at Campbellsport (Varsity)On the ensuing kick, the Panther's specialty teams thought that they should get into the act. As they ran down to cover the kick, they would punish the return man who ended up fumbling the ball of which senior Joel Sirus would recover. It was now Greendale's ball, and once again they were looking at a short field as they lined up on the Cougar's 13-yard line.

Junior Sam brick was now in at quarterback as Valente was done for the evening. Three plays later, Drumel would cross the goal line once again from 8-yards out. Brees drilled it through the uprights making the score a rather lopsided 37-0 with still 1:16 left in the 3rd.

After the ensuing kick, the Cougars would begin their next drive from their 23. It was here where they put their longest drive of the game together, but after 10-plays, they ended up giving the ball up on downs.

Greendale would now take possession on their 42-yard line. With their 2nd offense now in the game, they would fumble after 2-plays giving the ball up to the Cougars. Three plays later, however, the Cougars gave it right back as they fumbled on their 28-yard line.

The Panthers could only put 3-plays together before Nethery was forced to punt from his own end zone.

Greendale at Campbellsport (Varsity)After another nice kick, the Cougars found themselves on Greendale's 48. With the running clock by virtue of the 35-point rule ticking away, they would rip off 3-plays before the game finally came to an end.

The final score would be Greendale 37 - Campbellsport 0. Greendale was just too much for the Cougars of Campbellsport. The Panthers will now have to travel to Pewaukee for a conference-crossover clash with the Pirates of Pewaukee. Pewaukee open their season by playing at New Berlin Eisenhower last Friday night. They ended up winning that game by a score of 25-15 behind a strong performance from their featured running back, Derek Watt. This by far will be one of the toughest games of the season for Greendale as the Pirates have a 20-game conference-winning streak going. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 at Pewaukee High School.

By the way! Kudos to all of the Panther faithful who made the trip to the game. I would say that we had the Campbellsport fans beat 3 to 1. In a rough estimate, I would say that there were over 800 Greendale fans there.... WOW!

The GHS Mash Unit

Greendales trainers

Travis Hering - Chris Mackenzie L.A.T - Kevin Ciriacks

There are a few unsung heroes that need to be introduced. They are the members of this year's athletic training staff for Greendale High School. With their expert training and knowledge of the human body, these gentlemen are the ones responsible for keeping all of the GHS athletes in the game.

Of course we have to start with the "boss" Chris Mackenzie L.A.T (center) for he as been with Greendale for 11 years already. Working with him as interns are Kevin Ciriacks (right) who comes to us from Marquette University, and Travis Hering (left) who comes to us from the University Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both of these gentlemen will be working under Chris as part of their training for they both will soon become certified athletic trainers.

Please make sure you all say "HI" and let them know what a great job they are doing.

GPTC Hosts Family Day Picnic
GPTC - 8/21/10

2010 Family PicnicTo help kick off the up and coming football season, the Greendale Panther Touchdown Club hosted a huge family picnic that was held down at Gavinski Stadium. All of the fix'ins were provide for the players, their families, friends and fans.

This day signifies the last of the two-a-day practices and would be the final weekend before the regular football season begins. The season will kick off Thursday night at 7:00pm as the Panthers travel to Campbellsport for a non-conference clash. Friday, the varsity reserve team will open their season at home against Campbellsport's reserve team, which starts at 4:00pm.

2010 Family PicnicNot only was there a picnic being held, it was also the day where all of the team photos were taken. Family and friends were able to walk on the field and take all the pictures they wanted with all of the players and coaches. There were formal team pictures taken as well that were needed for the yearbook and programs.

2010 Family Picnic"This was something that we wanted to make a little more special this year," said GPTC's Tim Nethery. "It was done in the past but we just wanted to enhance it a little more by inviting all of the parents from all of the levels so that it would give everyone an opportunity to get to know each other. Of course I have a lot of people to thank who volunteered their time to help put this whole thing together. I thought the turnout was great making the day a huge success. Hopefully we can get more people to join our worthwhile cause because after all, it's all for the players and the football program."

Let The Party Begin!

The Greendale Panthers Begin Their Season
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/10/10

2010 training camp at Carroll CollegeThe summer vacation is finally over for the Greendale Panther football team as they reported to the high school for a bus ride that would take them to Carroll College located in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Why.. you ask? WHY NOT! The coaches feel that it helps them concentrate a little better not to mention gives the players a change a scenery. It also gives them a little taste of what college life is all about too for they ended up staying overnight in the college dorms. The only thing missing was the air conditioning. OUCH! ... Yes it was very warm and VERY humid as temperatures reached 90 degrees. That was the air temperature anyway. The temperature on the field reached somewhere in the neighborhood of 105 degrees. Not to worry though for there was plenty of water around and it was cold. I checked it several times myself just to make sure.

The first few days are geared to getting physically ready to play the game and to work on all of the various skill drills. One thing that the coaches are doing this year is platooning. This is something that can be difficult for high school teams to do, but the Panther staff has looked very carefully at their players and they felt that they could do it.

Platooning has major advantages. First of all, players won't have to play a whole game. Playing a whole game at certain positions can wear on you after a while. This can result in sloppier play and even more importantly then that, the risk for injuries. It is also easier to practice because the position coaches can concentrate on their players at their position. This gives them a better feel and more confidence because they are all able to get more reps in during practice. It also helps when the offense goes against the defense in practice. You are pitting the starters against each other, which helps each squad on both sides of the ball play as close to a real game situation as possible. Of course there maybe a few players that might play both ways, but that will be kept to a minimum. The bottom line is that a certain pride is developed amongst each squad and they will be nice and fresh during the course of the game.

The next big hurdle for the coaches will be determining positions and a starting line up. This can only be done through lots of practices and drills. Eventually the goal will be to come up with a starting group and to make sure that the backups are up to speed and ready to step in if needed. Let's not forget that football is a team sport and every player is a member of the team. Somewhere during the season, each and every player will have a vital role in helping them achieve their ultimate goal. That would be a trip to Camp Randall in November for a crack at a state championship.

Friday, August 20th. the Panthers will take their annual pilgrimage down to Kenosha Tremper for a full contact scrimmage. This is usually when the last minute decisions on who will start for the season will finally be made. It's one thing to be in shape and look good in drills, but it's another thing to see how a player looks under fire in game like conditions.

2010 training camp at Carroll CollegeIt's looking more and more like Greendale will end up as a Division 2 team this year. That's where they ended up last year and word has it that the enrollment is higher for this coming school year. It's nothing to really get excited about because the Division 2 teams can only play with 11 guys at a time just like the Division 3 teams. I don't know about you, but not having to face arch nemesis Wisconsin Lutheran will be kind of nice for a change. Of course, the playoffs are a long way away and talking about them right now is kind of ridiculous. A lot of things have to happen first... like playing a full 9 game schedule AND not getting hurt in the process.

Greendale will open their season on Thursday August 26th at 7:00pm with a non-conference game against Campbellsport. Campbellsport is about a 1-1/2 drive north of Greendale so make sure all you Panther fans get an early start.

As in the past, cameras and a reporter will be there to cover the game so make sure you stop by this website to check out the highlight videos, pictures and articles.

While I hate to see the summer pass, I am officially ready for the 2010 Greendale Panther football season to begin. As for the summer passing, I actually don't mind because I can't take the heat and humidity anymore.

The Greendale Youth Teams Begin Practice
GPTC-8/2/10

2010 youth season beginsOn August 2nd, the 2010 Greendale Panther youth football squad began their 2010 pre-season practice season. This year they come in with 140 players that cover grades 4 through 8. Just like last year, they will be carrying 4 teams that are broken down by grades. The 4th and 5th graders will make up the "D" team, the 6th graders will make up the "C" team, the 7th graders will be making up the "B" team, and the 8th graders will be making up the "A" team. Each team will play a team that should match the talent level. When possible, all 4 teams will play at the same location, but there are a few teams in the league that do not carry a "D" team so they might end up playing a different "D" team instead.

2010 youth season beginsThe GYFL has been around since 1977. They are part of the AAYFL League that represents many communities in the south eastern corner of Wisconsin. If you would like to read more about the history of the program, click here.

Their season will begin on September 11th on the road against neighboring Franklin. For the complete schedule click here.

Disappointing Finish For The Panthers At Their Own Passing Tournament
GPTC-7/24/10

Greendale's Passing Tournament briefing at mid-field.Greendale just finished up their off-season 7-on-7 passing leagues with a disappointing finish at the turf. This was the 2nd Annual Panther Passing League Tournament that was held last Saturday at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium.

Despite the record breaking rain totals from the previous two day, the tournament was still scheduled to go thanks to the benefits of Greendale's new artificial turf field. "It was funny because I had a few coaches call me and asked me if the tournament was still on" said Head Panther Coach Rob Stoltz. "Of course! I told them. It doesn't even look like it rained up here. Apparently some of them didn't know we had a turf field."

There were a total of 8 teams invited from around the area. Each team would play each other for two 15 minute halves. They would start from the 40 yard-line and try to score a touchdown. Just one first down was available at the 20 yard-line. If a teams scores, they get 7 points.  If they fail to score in any way, shape or form, the defense gets 4 points. The quarterback has 4 seconds to get rid of the ball on each play.

It was set up with a double elimination format but even at that, Greendale had a little trouble offensively, which pretty much took them out of contention. Nonetheless, everyone had a good time dusting off the cobwebs and getting ready for their up and coming seasons. Members of the Greendale Panther Touchdown Club provide the concession help for the all day event.
