The Awards Banquet!
R. A. Mattrisch - 12/20/11

In keeping with tradition, the Greendale Panther football season isn't really officially over until the awards banquet, which was held on November 30th. This is when all of the players, coaches, families, and friends get together to enjoy one last moment together. I really enjoy these because you get to see the player's faces versus just their eyes through a helmet. It's also less intense because there is no clock or scoreboard involved.

2011 Greendale Panther Awards BanquetThis year it was held at Klemmer's located just east of Hwy 100 on Oklahoma Ave. Heading up and arranging this whole event was this year's GPABC football representatives; Katie Barczak, Kathy Henderson, Kitty Goyette, and Rosemary Karnowski. As you walked in, you were greeted in a special foyer located outside the main dining area. There you had the opportunity to browse history boards that were very well done and informative. I even saw a picture of Coach Ringelberg with his nice leather helmet back when he played for the Panthers. For me though, this was kind of extra special because I have been associated with the program for 31 years not including the 4 years I played either. It was special because it brought back so many great memories that put this huge smile on my face. It also made me proud because there is so much history and tradition involved within Greendale's program. I bet if you asked any past Greendale alum if they remembered playing there, they would say, "Like it was yesterday." The only down stroke of browsing through the room was that I realized I was getting old. Don't worry sports fans! This guy could still play if he had too! Not a whole game mind you, just 1 or 2 plays maybe.

Also staged throughout the room were several items on display that were part of a fundraising silent auction. The proceeds from this would be used to help the various programs maintain their high standards they have set for themselves. There were things like gifts cards, plaques, clothing, and various electronic devices all up for grabs.

2011 Greendale Panther Awards BanquetAs you walked into the main dining room, you could hear the sound of this year's football highlights being played on a screen in the corner of the room. On the tables were green, white, and black balloons along with a nice center piece highlighted by a little football next to a miniature goal post.

By 7:00 o'clock, everyone was sitting down awaiting the food. This would be served at the table family style, which included baked chicken, shredded beef, green beans, rolls, mashed potatoes with gravy, and for desert, ice cream and cake.

2011 Greendale Panther Awards BanquetAt 8:00 o'clock, Head Coach Rob Stoltz blew the whistle and the ceremony portion would begin. He first read through a rather extensive list of people and organizations so that he could thank them for helping and making Greendale football what it is. He also made special mention that there is no other program like this around. After that, it was time to recognize this year's Varsity players.

Receiving All Woodland Conference 1st team awards were: Kennedy Ringelberg (TE & DB), Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski (OLB), Peter Pekar (OLB), Drake Barczak (ILB), Bobby Hintz (DL), Matt Pulizos (OL), Sam Bryan (OL), Sam Brick (QB), Mike Scheidt (RB), and Brett Nethery (P).

Receiving All-Woodland Honorable Mention were: Nate Miller (ILB), Ben White (DL), Mitchell Brees (DB), Brandon Kais (OL), Jesse Johnston (OL), Chris Halbur (OL), and Brett Nethery (WR).

For a complete list of all of the accolades handed out, click here.

2011 Greendale Panther Awards BanquetNext came this year's team awards. This years Scout Team Play of the Year went to several guys. They were Joe Jankowski, David Johnson, and Ahmad Abidalrahim. Most Improved Player of the Year went to Chris Halbur. Special Teams Player of the Year went to Brett Nethery. Offensive Linemen Player of the Year went to Matt Pulizos. Offensive Player of the Year went to Sam Brick. Defensive Player of the Year went to Drake Barczak. This year's Most Valuable Player went to Kennedy Ringelberg. And finally, the award that the coaches value the most because it is given to the player that excemplifies dedication and hard work both on and off the field, the Pride of the Panther Award went to Brett Nethery.

After the special awards were given out, the freshmen coaches brought up their team for recognition. Coaching the freshmen team this year was Head Coach Chris Muench, Jermaine Murry, and Lucas Pohlmann. After a rough start, the freshmen team finished with a 5-3 record.

Next up was the Varsity Reserve team. They finished up 8-1 this year. Coaching the reserves are Head Coach Keith Ringelberg, Tim Gavinski, Matt Susek, and Jermaine Murry.

2011 Greendale Panther Awards BanquetThe night concluded with the introduction of all of the non-senior varsity players to start with followed by the seniors who have played their last game at Greendale. Coach Stoltz always prepares a special page describing each senior that may include telling a story about a special time or incident that happened during the course of the year, or maybe just some special thoughts that he had about that particular player. After the last player was talked about, everyone got up shuck hands, some people said good bye, and others said that they will see each other again next year.

All I know is that this year is NOW officially over and the next season has NOW officially begun. Can't wait!

Who Would Have Thought!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/21/11

Brookfield East at Greendale (Varsity)After experiencing some major success throughout the 2011 season, the Greendale Panthers would exit out of the first round of the playoffs for the third consecutive year in a row losing to the Brookfield East Spartans 14-7. It was a funny game to watch for it was hard to tell if it was the defenses doing all the damage or was it just both offenses that seemed to find a way to self destruct. Nothing was a given because it looked as though one team had it going and then all of a sudden they lost possession of the ball.

The Panthers had their work cut out for them going into this game as well for they lost their two starting running backs for the year in Mike Scheidt and Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski. In fact, in that same game two weeks ago, Robby Blackwood, who started at an outside linebacker would also have to sit a few games as a result of a concussion. Then that injury list grew longer as the Panther's stud middle linebacker Drake Barczak, who had been anchoring the middle on defense all year, went down early with a knee injury. I've been around high school football for quite a long time and any time a team loses that many key players, it's going to affect things both physically and mentally.

Even though they lost, the most inspiring thing I witnessed was that the Panthers never gave up. You could see other players stepping up to try an offset the setbacks. That is a tribute to the coaching staff. Going into the half, Greendale was down 14-0 but they came out fighting. That all showed when Brookfield was on the 1-yard line going in for what would have been their 3rd touchdown. The Panthers dug in and stood the whole offense up at the line of scrimmage and forced a fumble of which they recovered. They could have easily figured that East was going to score but they didn't. They did what they were inspired to do by an experienced coaching staff. In the end, however, when the clock read zeros, the scoreboard wasn't in their favor and their season would come to an abrupt end. Would things have been different if they had all of their players? Without a doubt, but just like in life, bad things happen and you just have to play with the cards that were dealt to you and move on. Besides, at the end of the day, it's just a silly game when you think about it.

Brookfield East at Greendale (Varsity)Brookfield would be kicking first to start the game. Right off the bat, the Panthers tried something very different on the return. As the ball was caught by Mitchell Brees, he would take a few steps forward and then stop. Then out of the clear blue, he would throw the ball backwards across the field to Gaelan Seibold. He would then take off running and looked to be heading for the end zone, but a East defender just managed to get a piece of his foot enough to trip him up and he would be down on the Panther 37.

Panther senior quarterback Sam Brick would now lead his offense out on to the field and set them up for their first drive on the night. Things were looking good as they slowly and methodically marched down the field to the Spartan 33 when all of a sudden, a low snap got by Brick sending him scrambling to get the ball. That would back them up 15-yards. Then on the next play, running back Jake Zwyicki would get off a nice run, which was called back on a holding penalty. On the very next play after that, they would jump to early backing them up even farther. Then just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, Brick would fumble giving the ball to Brookfield on Greendale's 49.

East would move the ball to Greendale's 32 in 4-plays when all of a sudden, the Panther's would make a huge play as safety Kennedy Ringelberg would make a great interception off of a tipped ball to give Greendale the ball back on their 29.

Unfortunately, the offense couldn't do anything and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

The Spartans would begin this drive from their 35. They too couldn't get a first down and were forced to line up for a punt.

Brookfield East at Greendale (Varsity)After the snap, Greendale would come up with another big play as speedster David Michaels would come off the left side of the line and block the kick, which rolled out of bounds on Brookfield's 35.

Again the Panthers could not do anything and were forced to punt from East's 42.

Brookfield would take over from their 17. Up to this point, the Spartan's running attack was kept in check as they had trouble getting past the Panther's stingy defense. Five plays into this drive, Greendale would take a major hit as middle linebacker Drake Barczak would get rolled up on and would have to leave the game. East could only muster up 3 more plays before turning the ball over on downs on the Spartan's 25.

The Panther's offense was now not looking sharp at this point as they would end up punting again going 3 and out.

It was now well into the 2nd quarter as the Brookfield offense would take to the field and start from their 42. They would soon find their running game again as they marched down to the Panther's 5-yard line in 9-plays. On the very next play, the Panthers would come up with yet another big play as Brees would tip the ball in the end zone, which fell right in the hands of Ringelberg. He would take off running and was tackled on his own 8-yard line.

After a nice run by Zywicki, Greendale soon found themselves on their 27. On the very next play, Zywicki would fumble giving the ball right back to the Spartans with a short field in front of them.

On their very first play, they would run right up the middle and score from 31-yards out for the first score of the game. The extra point try was good giving them the early lead with a score of 7-0 with 2:07 left in the 1st half.

Brookfield East at Greendale (Varsity)The Panthers would start their next drive from their 35. Again they didn't look sharp and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

After a huge kick by Brett Nethery, Brookfield would be taking over from their 27. On their very first play, they would run a bubble pass to the left and would score completing a 1-play 73-yard scoring drive. The point after try was good making the score 14-0 with 1:15 left in the half.

Greendale would make another play on the kick as East would try a hard squib, which Sam Bryan would smother on the Panther's 47. Four plays later, Brick would over throw his intended receiver, which ended up in the hands of Brookfield for an interception.

East would take a knee to end the 1st half of play.

The Panthers would be kicking to open the 2nd half. After the return, East would be starting from their 34. They were now starting to gouge the Panthers up the middle with trap plays and soon found themselves on Greendale's 20 in 5-plays. It was here that the mighty cats stiffened up and forced them to settle for a 32-yard field goal attempt. That kick would be short so Greendale would take over on their 20.

Greendale's offense looked to have gotten their mojo back as they started this drive like they did in the beginning of the game. They would put 14-plays together before coming up a half an inch short on 4th down at the Spartan's 18 after a suspect mark of the ball.

Again Greendale would come up with another big play 2-plays later as Brees would intercept a pass on the 25 and return it to the Spartan's 3-yard line.

Two plays later, Brick would sneak it in from 2-yards out for Greendale's first score of the night. Brett Nethery would make his kick and Greendale now found themselves trailing by a touchdown with a score of 14-7 and 1:08 left in the 3rd quarter.

Brookfield East at Greendale (Varsity)After the ensuing kick, East would start from their 34. Again they would work on the middle of the Panther defense and soon found themselves knocking on the door at the Panther's 1-yard line. Greendale needed to dig deep to keep East from scoring as it was now the 4th quarter. With everyone packed in at the line of scrimmage, the ball would be snapped. All of a sudden, you could see the whole Spartan line stood up by Greendale's at the line of scrimmage. During the melee, senior Matt Pulizos would reach in and somehow knocked the ball loose from the quarterback. Senior Ben White would recover thus stopping East from what appeared to be a sure touchdown.

Greendale would now take over on their 3 with 10:29 left in the game. They would work the ball all the way to the Spartan's 37 when they would be looking at a crucial 4th and 1. It was here where Greendale would call a time out for this might be the biggest play of the game. After the time out, Greendale would reach into their bag of tricks once again. As they entire offense line would make their initial set, they would all of a sudden get up and switch sides. The concept was two fold. They were going to load up the left side of the line and with any luck; the Spartans would jump off sides. Mind you that the officials were aware of this play as typically coaches inform the refs of certain plays before the game starts so that they aren't surprised when the play happens. When Greendale made their switch, a defender clearly crossed the line of scrimmage but the ref did not throw the flag for some reason. Brick would take the direct snap and was immediately stopped in the backfield forcing the Panthers to turn the ball of on downs at the Spartan's 40. Needless to say, this was a blown call by the official that Head Coach Rob Stoltz made sure he knew about.

Brookfield East at Greendale (Varsity)There was now 4:23 left in the game. Greendale would need to make a stop and rather quickly so that they could get the ball back with enough time on the clock. Five plays later, they did that and forced East to punt from Greendale's 42.

The Brookfield punter would get off a clutch kick, as the ball would roll out of bounds at the Panther's 4-yard line. Greendale would try to work their passing game but to no avail. They would end up turning the ball over on downs on their 3-yard line.

East would come in and take three knees to end the game.

Greendale would come up short in the 1st round of the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row, as they would loose by a score of 14-7. If you were to say up front that Greendale would only score 7 points in this game, you would have probably been laughed at. But then again, the game of football can be funny some times. In the end, what stopped Greendale from scoring was Greendale. It always comes down to making plays and there were just not enough made on the offensive side of the ball. The defense, on the other hand, made plenty of plays all night long.

Brookfield East at Greendale (Varsity)For the seniors, they have played their last game as a Panther. Some of these guys have been Panthers for 9 years when they started out their playing days at the youth level. When talking to these guys after the game, they all felt the same way. They all said it's a weird feeling knowing that it's all over. Some may move on to play in collage and some will just live with the memories they have. The underclassmen will have a year to think about what happened and I'm sure they will work hard in the off season and come back to make their own history. A history in what is a very proud fraternity and one that is part of one of the most successful football programs in the state of Wisconsin.

For my last closing remark, I have just one thing left to say, especially to the seniors. "Playing football is not about the winning or losing, it's about the journey."

On behalf of the Greendale Panther Touchdown Club, families and friends, the school, and the alumni, we thank you for all of the time and hard work you put into this great sport. Congratulations players and coaches! This will help you in some way, shape, or form for the rest of your lives.

As for this "journey" thing I mentioned? That continues on...

All Dressed Up And Nowhere To Go!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/14/11

Cudahy at Greendale (Varsity)I find it so funny sometimes how things happen and why they happen. I'm actually thinking that there is no such thing as normal anymore. I know my wife is always telling me that I'm not normal. Maybe they should remove the word from the dictionary. This was to be a big weekend for Panther football fans for two reasons. The first one was that they were playing their last regular season game against the visiting Cudahy Packers. With a win, they would end up undefeated in conference, which is not all that easy to do. This would also earn them a #1 seed for the up and coming playoffs, which are to start in a week. Then out of the 423 schools that play football in the state, 224 would continue on as part of the WIAA playoff structure. As like every year, anticipation is high because everyone wants to see who's playing who and where in the tournament. All of a sudden, we get word that a school is filing a law suite with the WIAA over the interpretation of some rule regarding playoff eligibility. Because of that, the WIAA is postponing the posting of the playoff brackets pending the results of this suite. What does that mean? Well it puts a major problem out there for all of the schools in preparing for their next game. These schools will lose 2 days of prep time, which will undoubtedly make things interesting. I would also have to assume that the games that were supposed to be played this Friday would now be moved to Saturday. This I'm sure will screw up plans for some people out there as well. While this is a first in playoff history, everyone will have to do what they always do in situations like this. Adapt and deal with it.

What is known is that the Greendale Panthers are on a roll. Their offense is at the top of their game and the defense is as stingy as ever. Cudahy found that out Friday as they ended up getting schooled by the Panthers 49-19 in what was not much of a game at all. Greendale finished with a perfect 8-0 record for conference play and 8-1 overall with the non-conference loss to Franklin. They ended up scoring 318 points for the season, which comes to an average of 35.3 points per/game. Their defense allowed 85 points, which comes to a per/game average of 9.4. Those are some impressive numbers to say the least. Hopefully they can continue this success into the playoffs because the caliber of play will now go up as each game comes along.

Cudahy at Greendale (Varsity)Cudahy would be kicking first to start the game. After the return, Greendale would be starting from their 26. Right off the bat, they would punch the Packers in the mouth as Greendale's Jake Zywicki would take a handoff behind his big offensive line and sprint 69 yards all the way to the Packer's 5-yard line. Two plays later, Zywicki would take it in from 5-yards out for the first score of the game. Kicker Brett Nethery would spit the uprights making the score 7-0 with 10:59 left in the 1st quarter.

The Packers would have to start from their 20 after Nethery would kick to the end zone. They would put 9-plays together before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 25.

The Panther's would open this drive with a pass as quarterback Sam Brick would throw a perfect pass down the middle of the field to Nethery for a huge 38-yard gain. After shaking off a bad snap and a penalty, the cats would score 7-plays later as Brick would sneak it in from 1-yard out. Nethery would convert the kick making the score 14-0 with 2:57 left in the 1st quarter.

Nethery would reach the end zone on the following kick so Cudahy would have to start from their 20. Greendale's defense, which is the best in the conference, would apply pressure with back-to-back sacks for losses. On the third play, Gaelan Seibold would then intercept a Packer pass giving the ball back to the offense with a short field in front of them.

Four plays later, Brick would follow his big line into the end zone from 1-yard out for the Panther's 3rd touchdown of the quarter. The extra point try was good making the score 21-0 as the 1st quarter would come to a close.

Cudahy at Greendale (Varsity)With the start of the 2nd quarter, Cudahy would be receiving the kick. After the return, they would start from their 38. On their seventh play of the drive, they would find themselves on the Panther 30 looking at a 4th and 10. They would go for it and attempt a long pass into the end zone, but a very savvy Mitchell Brees would intercept and then drop the ball on purpose knowing that they would get the ball at the 30 with the incompletion versus the 20 if he were to decide to catch it.

Brick would bring his gang back out on the field and line them up on their 20. Four plays later, he would sting the Packers again with another perfect pass to a wide open Nethery down the middle of the field completing a 36-yard scoring strike. He would then follow that up with a kick for the extra point and Greendale was now on there way to blowing this game wide open like they have been doing all year with a score of 28-0 and 8:47 left in the 1st half.

Cudahy would start from their 29 after the ensuing kick and return. They needed to get something going soon or this game would get away from them. That's what they did for on their fifth play; they would run the old quarterback throw back play taking the ball all the way to the Panther 1. On the very next play, Cudahy would sneak it in for their first score of the game. The extra point try was missed so the score would now be 28-6 Panthers, with 6:03 left in the 1st half.

Cudahy at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale would be starting from their 35 as the Cudahy kicker would end up kicking the ball out of bounds. Three plays later, Brick would torch the Packers again as he would find a wide open Kennedy Ringelberg running down the middle of the field for an easy 57-yard touchdown play. The point after try was good and now Greendale was on top 35-6 with 4:38 still left in the 1st half.

Cudahy would not lie down for on the ensuing kick, they would get a nice return all the way to the Panther's 37. Four plays later, they would catch Greendale out of position on a play action fake and complete a 25-yard pass to the right side of the end zone. This time, their point after try was good making the score 35-13 in favor of Greendale with 2:26 left in the half.

The Panthers would steel the momentum right back on the following kick as Ringelberg would catch the ball and race 89 yards up the right side of the field all the way to the house for another Panther touchdown. Nethery would make the kick and now Greendale looked to be running away with this one by a score of 42-13 with 2:12 left in this 1st very busy half.

Cudahy at Greendale (Varsity)After the ensuing kick, Cudahy would start from their 38. They would end up having to punt from their 43 going 3 and out.

After the kick, Greendale would begin from their 43. They would run 3-plays down to the Cudahy 19 before calling a time out as there was only :05 seconds left on the clock. They would call of the services of Nethery to attempt a 36-yard field goal try. He would come up a little short because of the wind so the score would remain 42-13 with :03 seconds left. Cudahy would take a knee to finally end the 1st half off play.

With the wind at his back, Nethery would be kicking to Cudahy to start the 2nd half. That kick would also find the end zone so Cudahy would get the ball on their 20. They would run 13-plays taking the ball to the Panther 8 before Greendale linebacker Peter Pekar would make a one-handed interception in the end zone to put an end to Cudahy's threat.

Cudahy at Greendale (Varsity)The Panthers would now begin from their 20. They would end up turning the ball over on downs after 9-plays on Cudahy's 22.

Cudahy was having issues with Greendale's defense and was forced to punt from their 33 after 6-plays.

Greendale would now send in Josh Ringelberg to drive the bus. Three plays later, he would roll to his right and looked to be in trouble so he ended up forcing a bad pass that was intercepted by Cudahy on Greendale's 27.

The Packers would find the end zone 3-plays later on an 8-yard run around the right end. They would try for the 2-point conversion but failed making the score 42-19 with 8:00 now left in the game.

Cudahy would try an onside kick and almost got it but the official said that the Cudahy player was out of bounds when he fell on the ball. Greendale would end up taking possession on their 34. Coach Stoltz who likes to keep a certain cushion with the score would have to send in his 1st offensive unit this time. Normally he doesn't do that but Cudahy was keeping in all of their starters so he would have to match that so the game doesn't slip away. Twelve plays later, Greendale would again reach the end zone on a 1-yard option keeper by Brick. Nethery would make his kick and the score was now a whopping 49-19 with only 1:40 left in the game.

Cudahy would get another nice return on the ensuing kick. They would end up starting from Greendale's 41. They ran 4-palys before the game would finally come to an end.

Cudahy at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale would win this one rather easily by a score of 49-19. This win also puts them in the elite class of being called an undefeated conference champion. Now the waiting game as they will find out Monday who they will face for the first round of the playoffs. Do not hold me to this but right now, it is looking very likely that we could be playing Brookfield East at home. As soon as we know for sure, we'll post it here along with all of the brackets.

Freshmen

The Grand Finale!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/13/11

Cudahy at Greendale (Freshmen)All good things eventually come to end. The big question is always, how is it going to end? Well the Panther freshmen football team ended their 2011 season in grand style as they demolished the Cudahy Packers 56-12 at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Field. The first thought that came to my mind after the game was how much these guys improved since the first game they played. I'll be honest, after watching them at their first game; I kind of resorted to the fact that they might not win a game this season. I'm sure those who were there for that game would have probably agreed. But then I had to remind myself that these guys were learning for the very first time, one of the most complicated offenses out there. These guys also won the AAYFL Championship last year so you knew there was talent there. All it would take is a little time. Sure enough, after only being able to score 34-points in the first 3 games, they finally got the spread offense down to a science and put up 197-points in the remaining 5 games. What's even scarier is that this freshmen team had several players moved up to the varsity reserve level.

Cudahy at Greendale (Freshmen)I guess the point I'm trying to make is that this class is going to be a force for the next couple of years. When I talk about this team and the varsity reserve team with Head Varsity Coach Rob Stoltz, I can't help noticing a little drool dripping from the corner of his mouth. I'm sure not all of these players realize this yet, but they have what it takes to bring home a gold ball. In fact, I am predicting that! The million dollar question will be if they realize that... and will they work hard together as a team to fulfill this prophecy of mine. Only time will tell...

When I got to the field, It was still raining on an off like it was doing all day. When it comes to rain and football, the Greendale'ites don't really care because they have the artificial turf field. The other thing I observed when I got there was Cudahy's football team. They only had 14-players total. That means that during the game, there was only 1 coach, 3-players, and their ball boy standing on their sideline. I really felt bad because back in the 90's, Cudahy was always a force to be reckoned with. They were always scary fast and loaded with very skilled players. They even managed to get their whole community worked up into lather to the point that they had this beautiful stadium facility built. Hopefully it's just a phase, which seems to be happening to a lot of programs this year within the conference.

Cudahy at Greendale (Freshmen)The Cudahy Packers would be kicking first to start the game. After the return, Greendale would begin their first drive of the night from their 37. Four plays later, quarterback David Wood would throw a bubble pass to Josh Michaels who then cut across the grain and scored from 24-yards out. Kicker Matt Schutte would make the point after try making the score 7-0 with 8:07 left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Cudahy would start their first drive of the night from their 37. They would only manage to get to their 40 before having to line up for a punt as they went 3 and out. On the play, the punter would fumble the ball of which Michaels would recover for Greendale on the Packer's 20-yard line.

On the very first play, Wood would keep the ball on an option play and zigzag his way to the end zone for a 20-yard scoring run. Schutte would make the kick making the score 14-0 with 6:24 left in the 1st quarter.

Cudahy at Greendale (Freshmen)On the following kick, Cudahy would answer back as they carried the ball all the way for a 75-yard touchdown return. They would go for 2 and fail making the score 14-6 with 6:00 left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would start from their 48. On the very first play, Wood would keep it again and run all the way to the Packer's 2-yard line. Three plays later, Wood would fake a pitch from 5-yards out and keep it himself for another touchdown. The point after try was good making the score 21-6 with 5:36 still left in the 1st quarter.

After a Greendale squib kick, Cudahy would take over from their 37. The Packers would run 9-plays before turning the ball over on downs back to the Panthers on Greendale's 30.

The Panthers would execute a nice 13-play drive all the way to the Packer 5 before Wood accidently threw an interception in the end zone. Cudahy would get the ball and start from their 20.

Three plays later, the Packers would fumble of which Greendale would recover on the Cudahy 15. On the very next play, Wood would throw a touchdown pass to Braxton Joehnk in the left corner of the end zone. Schutte would make the kick making the score 28-6 with 5:08 now left in the 2nd quarter.

Cudahy at Greendale (Freshmen)The Packers would try to get something going from their 34 after the return. They would be relegated to 3 and out and had to punt from their 30.

The Panthers now had the ball at midfield. Seven plays later, running back Brady Kais would score on a pitch from 6-yards out. The point after try was good and now Greendale looked to be pulling away with a score of 35-6 and 1:17 left in the 1st half.

After another squib kick, Cudahy would start from their 32. Two plays later, they would fumble again of which Greendale's Eric Martinson would recover on the Packer's 27.

With the clock starting to get short, Greendale would go into their hurry-up offense. Three plays later, Wood would connect with Brad Lachman on the 10-yard line who made a nifty move to avoid a tackler and then ended up in the end zone for another Panther touchdown. Schutte would make the kick and Greendale was now on top 42-6 with just :05 seconds left in the half.

Those 5 seconds would be burned up on the following kick ending the 1st half of play.

Greendale would be kicking first to start the 2nd half. Because of the score, they would be playing with a running clock as a result of the 35-point rule. The rain also finally stopped, which made it a lot nicer out.

After the return, Cudahy would start from their 38. The Panther defense held them to 3 and out and forced them to punt from their 44.

After the return, Greendale would take over from their 33. Three plays later, Kais would take another pitch and sprint 60-yards for another Panther score. Schutte's kick was good making the score 49-6 with 5:44 left in the 3rd.

The Packers would start their next drive on their 31. Seven plays later, Cudahy managed to run one in from 25-yards out for their 2 touchdown of the night. They would try for 2 and fail making the score 49-12 with :31 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

Cudahy at Greendale (Freshmen)After the ensuing kick, Greendale would take over from their 35. The 3rd quarter would end here so the teams would have to switch ends. It was here where the 2nd offense would take over as well. At the helm was quarterback Jake Feinas. He must have gotten his driver's licenses already for he would guide the team to the end zone and score from 5-yards out on an option keeper. This would cap off a 14-play 65-yard drive that pretty much ate up the 4th quarter clock. Schutte would make the kick making the score a rather lopsided 56-12 with 2:03 left in the game.

After the ensuing kick, Cudahy would take over 1st and 10 from their 22. They would run 3-plays before the game would finally end.

Greendale would prove to be too much as they would win 56-12. The Panther's freshmen team would finish 5-3 for their season. What was exciting about this team is that first of all, there were a lot of guys playing, but even more then that, they were all excited about playing. That tells me that the state of football in Greendale High School is in great health all the way around.

These guys will now turn in their equipment and will have to find something else to do Monday, as there would be no more practices this year. The coaches did gather them up in the end zone after the game and thanked them all and congratulated them for a great season. They then reminded the players about what it takes to continue to be successful for the up and coming years. Hat's off to another job well done! Greendale football is alive and well!

Success Breeds Success!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/10/11

Greendale at Cudahy (Varsity Reserve)All I can tell you after watching every varsity reserve game this year is that Greendale is in great shape for the next couple of years. In fact this is how it's been for the last several years, which is why the varsity has consistently enjoyed so much success lately.

That success continued Monday night in Cudahy as Greendale took on the Cudahy Packers for their last game of the season. When the last play of the year was over, the scoreboard read 35-0 as Greendale had their 3rd shutout of the season not counting the cancelled St. Thomas More game. The game was all about big plays behind the arm of freshmen quarterback Josh Ringelberg who put up NFL type numbers in the passing yards department. What is so exciting is that he is only a freshmen so he will be pretty much a household name in the homes or everyone who follows Woodland Conference football the next couple of years.

Greendale at Cudahy (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would be receiving first to start the game. After the return, they would be starting from their 26. It only took 5-plays to reach the end zone as Ringelberg hooked up with Doug St. Onge for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Luckily I knew better then to park my car on the street at the end of the football field because St. Onge would kick it way over the fence and onto a car. Can you say dent? Anyway, the score was 7-0 with 8:29 left in the opening quarter of play.

After the ensuing kick, the Packers would start their first drive of the night from their 20. They would end up punting after 6-plays from their 26 as they had numerous motion penalties that hurt them.

Greendale at Cudahy (Varsity Reserve)After the kick, Greendale would take over on their 37. Four plays later, Ringelberg would connect with St. Onge again who was running down the middle of the field for a 27-yard touchdown pass. The point after try was good again as Greendale added 7 more to their total making the score 14-0 with 4:12 left in the 1st quarter.

After the kick, Cudahy would start from their 29. They would only manage 5-yards before having to punt going 3 and out.

After the kick, Greendale would begin from their 32. Three plays later, Ringelberg would find a different receiver in Cody Kmetz and executed a huge 55-yard pass play for another Panther touchdown. St. Onge would make his kick and Greendale was now all over Cudahy 21-0 with still 1:30 left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale at Cudahy (Varsity Reserve)St. Onge must have been a little juiced up on the following kick as he would kick it over the return man's head which was then gathered on the Cudahy 7. Eight plays later, Greendale's Chad Newton would intercept a Packer pass and return it 40-yards all the to Cudahy's 10. On the very first play, Panther running back Tim Ventura would take a pitch and race around the left side of the line and score Greendale's 4th touchdown of the game. St. Onge would convert the point after attempt making the score 28-0 with 7:59 now left in the 2nd quarter.

After The ensuing kick, Cudahy would start from their 35. The Packers would attempt a pass on first down but Greendale's David Johnson had a different idea as he would intercept the ball on Cudahy's 45.

Greendale at Cudahy (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers had a little trouble with the yellow rags so they would be forced to punt from their 48 going 3 and out.

After the punt and return, Cudahy would be starting from their 24. The Packers would put a nice 11-play drive together but Greendale's Josh Wicks would nip that in the bud as he would intercept the ball on the 3-yard line.

Greendale would just run 3-plays before the 1st half would come to an end.

The Panthers would kick to start the 2nd half. After the return, the Packers would start from their 34. The black cat's defense would make a statement right off the bat, as they forced Cudahy to punt from their 36 going 3 and out.

Greendale at Cudahy (Varsity Reserve)After the return, Greendale would start from their 40-yard line. Two plays later, Ringelberg would torch the Packers again with a long 45-yard touchdown pass to Johnson who was sprinting down the middle of the field. St. Onge would make the point after making the score 35-0 with 7:34 left in the 3rd quarter. Because of the score, the 35-point rule would be initiated for the rest of the game unless the Packers could score and make the margin less than 35-points.

After the ensuing kick, Cudahy would begin from their 28. They would connect 7-plays before having to punt from their 45.

After the return, Greendale would begin their next drive from their 27. They would run 7-plays taking the game into the 4th quarter before looking at a 4th and 7 from their 43. The decision was made to punt the ball away.

Greendale at Cudahy (Varsity Reserve)After the kick, Cudahy would start from their 27. They would string 10-plays together before the clock would tick for the last time this varsity reserve season.

Greendale would shut the Packers out 35-0. After the team assembled in the end zone, an emotional Head Coach Keith Ringelberg congratulated his players for what they have done and then he thanked them for making it fun for not only him, but for the rest of the coaches as well. He went on and thanked them for being a part of something big and for putting in all the time and hard work that was needed to make the season a success. Lastly, he challenged everyone to work hard in the offseason and to comeback next year to continue the success that they have experienced this year.

It's hard to believe that the 2011 Greendale Panther varsity football season has finally come to an end. To say that they had a successful season would be an understatement. These guys finished with an impressive 8-1 record with their only loss coming against Greenfield. It was later discovered that Greenfield played pretty much all juniors, which will affect the out come of a game. Needless to say, it's the stats that Greendale posted from the season as they scored a total of 251 points, which comes to an average of 27.9 points per game while only allowing 72 points on defense, which comes to an average of 8 points per game. That's a winning combination in any book.

Most of the players will now turn in their gear while a handful will still continue the season with the varsity team. All I know is that I can't wait to watch these guys next year.

Varsity

7 And 0 And 1 To Go!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/7/11

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)It's getting close to the end of the regular season as the Panthers headed out to Wauwatosa West High School for their second to the last game. They would be taking on the Trojans who are struggling a bit this year at their newly renovated football stadium, which is really nice by the way. One of the Panthers biggest concerns going into this game was there speed. Tosa has a couple of speed burners that can get away from you if you let them. The game plan of course for the Panthers was to not let them get into the open field. After the game finally came to an end, it looked like their game plan worked as they would hold Tosa to just 7 points and won by a score of 46-7. The Panther's stingy defense actually kept West's offense from scoring, as their only points would come from a 97-yard kick return.

The Trojans would kick first to start the game. After the return, Greendale would begin their first drive of the night from their 44. Right out of the shoot, the Panthers would stay with their ground game behind their huge physical line and the strong running performances of Mike Scheidt, Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski, and quarterback Sam Brick. Five plays later they would find themselves in the end zone on an 11-yard run by Scheidt around the left end. Brett Nethery's extra point try would be blocked so the score would end up 6-0 with 9:35 left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)Wauwatosa would get a nice return on the ensuing kick and begin their first drive of the night from their 47. They would only string 3-plays together before the stingy Panther defense forced them to punt from their 45.

After the punt, Greendale would begin their next drive from their 27. Six plays later, Brick would see his big tight end Kennedy Ringelberg running down the middle of the field who made an amazing one handed catch for a 51-yard touchdown reception. Nethery would make his kick and Greendale was now up 13-0 with 4:54 left in the 1st quarter.

Tosa would now try to get something going as they would start from their 30 after the ensuing kick. Nine plays later, their quarterback would throw an ill advised pass that was intercepted by Greendale's Peter Pekar on the goal line and returned it all the way to the Panther 34.

Six plays later, Brick would find his favorite receiver Ringelberg again loose down the middle of the field for a nice 38-yard scoring pass. Nethery would make the kick and Greendale now looked to be popping this game open early by a score of 20-0 and 10:52 now in the 2nd quarter.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)Nethery would make the end zone with his kick so West would have to start from their 20. They would run 5-plays before the Trojans had to punt the ball away.

After the kick, Greendale would set the offense up on their 40. It just took 2-plays for them to reach pay dirt as Pekar would catch a Brick pass and score from 9-yards out. This time Doug St. Onge would try the extra point kick, which was blocked again so the score would now read 26-0 with 7:03 left in the 1st half.

Tosa would come up with a big play finally on the return as their return man would get loose and rumble 97-yards all the way to the end zone. Their extra point kick was good making the score 26-7 in favor of Greendale, with 6:49 left on the clock in the 1st half.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would start from their 25. They would only get off 3-plays before being forced to line up for a punt on their 34. It was here that the Panthers would try something different as they would fake it. That backfired as the pass was intercepted and returned to the cat's 32.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)That turnover was answered by another turnover as Tosa would fumble on the very first play. Pekar would recover it for the Panthers on their 32.

Greendale had a little problem with a bad snap and a penalty so they were looking at a 3rd and very long so they would quick kick catching Tosa without any deep man.

West now had the ball on their 40. They must have been using a greasy ball because they again would fumble after the ball carrier was nailed by Panther middle linebacker Drake Barczak. The runner would cough up the ball of which Garcia-Bankowski would recover for Greendale on Tosa's 38.

Eight plays later, Greendale would reach the zone again on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Brick. The point after try was good and Greendale now looked to be walking away with this one by a score of 33-7 with 1:42 left in the 1st half.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)The big foot of Nethery would come out again on the following kick so West would be forced to start from their 20. They would only get off 4-plays before the 1st half would come to an end.

Greendale would open the 2nd half by kicking first. After the return, Tosa would begin from their 37. The Panther defense was just too much for them to handle as they were forced to punt going 3 and out.

After the kick, the Panthers would begin from their 30. It was here where Head Coach Rob Stoltz would send in another running back from his talent pool in Jake Zywicki. Three of his runs later, Greendale was knocking on the door at Tosa's 4. Since Zywicki did pretty much of the work, they would give him the ball to finish the job for another Panther score from 4-yards out. Nethery would make his kick as Greendale piled on more points to make the score 40-7 with 8:14 left in the 3rd.

After another long kick, West would be starting from their 20 once again. They couldn't get anything going here either and were forced to punt from their 18.

Greendale now owned the ball on Tosa's 43. They would turn the ball over on downs at the Trojan 41.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)West would finally get a 1st down but on their 5th play, Panther middle linebacker Matt Friede would partially block a Tosa pass that caused the ball to go skyward. Going up and coming down with the ball was Greendale's Robby Blackwood for the interception.

Greendale would bring their offense back out and set up on West's 44. They would run 5-plays before the 3rd quarter came to an end.

After the teams switched ends, Greendale would bring their 2nd offensive unit out on the field. At the helm would be Josh Ringelberg. Three plays later, Greendale was looking at a 4th and 15 from their 28 so they would send out the field goal unit. Nethery would put plenty of leg on the ball, but he pulled the kick so Tosa would now take over on their 28-yard line.

Greendale would also send in their 2nd team defense to finish the game. They would pick up right where the first unit did as they forced the Trojans to punt going 3 and out.

After a nice little return by Gaelan Seibold, the Panthers would end up starting from their 47. On the very first play, Josh Ringelberg would fake a handoff and then bounce off a few defenders before scampering 53-yards to the rectangle for Greendale's 7th touchdown of the night. Nethery would miss the kick wide left making the score 46-7 with 8:34 left in the game. Because of the 35-point rule, the clock would now run continuously.

The overmatched Trojans would begin their next drive from their 33 after the ensuing kick. They would run 7-plays before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 26.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Varsity)Greendale would fail to get a 1st down so they would have to punt from their 30.

Tosa would not have any time left to run any plays as the running clock finally showed all zeros.

Greendale would win easily by a score of 46 to 7. With this win, Greendale would now be the sole Woodland Conference Champions in the Black Division. They have one game left next week as they will host the Cudahy Packers for the regular season finale. This game will still have some importance attached to it for if they win, they would be an undefeated conference champion which guarantees a #1 seed in the playoffs. This gives them the upper hand with having a home field advantage as well.

As for the playoffs, the schedule of events will go like this. After all of the games are finished next Friday night through out the state, the WIAA will then formulate the playoff brackets for all 7 divisions. That comes to a total of 224 teams. After the rough brackets are made, they will be sent out to the respective athletic directors for each school. At that time, the directors can review them and bring up any concerns that might be there. Once that process is done, they will publically publish the brackens sometime after 12:00 noon on Saturday. Stay tuned to this website for we will report the results as soon as they are known.

The Fast Forward Button
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/6/11

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Freshmen)I have to think by now; everyone is familiar with the fast forward button on their video media players. I remember way back in the VCR days when you would be watching something and then laughing when you pressed the fast forward button. Of course it was because everyone was moving so fast and yet so precise. It was kind of like watching the "Keystone Cops" waaaaay back in the olden days. Well that was kind of what it was like when you watched the backfield of the Wauwatosa West Trojan's freshmen team Thursday night. When one of them got the ball, it was like watching a video with the fast forward button pressed. Needless to say, Greendale doesn't really have a button like that so when their running backs got by the Panthers at the line of scrimmage, you could pretty much say good bye. Speed is one thing you can't coach and looking down the road, their varsity team might do some damage the next couple of years.

At any rate, when the game was over and the red glow from their running back's shoes diminished, the Trojans walked away with a 38-21 victory over the visiting Panthers. About the only consolation I heard was when I walked off the field. I over heard a referee say, "We have officiated these guys a few times now and you guys (Greendale) are the only team that didn't end up with a running clock and you also scored the most points against them." Tosa was 6-0 coming into this game.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Freshmen)The Wauwatosa West Trojans would be kicking first to start the game. After the return, Greendale would be starting from their 27. They would run a few plays when all of a sudden; Head Coach Chris Muench looked at the clock and noticed that there was now 11:00 minutes on it. OK... you're probably wondering why I mentioned this. The quarters for freshmen games are 10:00 minutes long. The officials didn't notice that the clock was running the wrong direction. That was a first in my book. Anyway, they got that straightened out as the Panthers were forced to punt from their 27 going 3 and out.

After the punt and return, Tosa would take over from their 39. On their third play, they would run a jet sweep to one of their speed demons who managed to get the edge and took off for a 60-yard touchdown run. The extra point try was good and Tosa was now up on the board first with a score of 7-0 and 6:24 left in the 1st quarter.

The Panthers would end up starting from deep in a hole following the ensuing kick. They would fail to get a first down again so they would have to punt from their 20.

The Trojans would now own the ball and start from their 46. On their very first play from scrimmage, they would fumble a handoff of which Greendale would recover on Tosa's 45.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Freshmen)The Panther's offense now looked to have settled down as they would take the ball all the way to Tosa's 5-yard line in 8-plays. On the next play, however, Panther quarterback David Wood would throw an interception on the 2-yard line that was returned all the way the other direction for another Tosa score. The point after try was blocked so the score would now be 13-0 Tosa, with 9:13 left in the 1st half.

After a short kick, the Panthers would now take over on their 42. Eleven plays later, Wood would throw a 10-yard scoring strike to Josh Michaels in the left corner of the end zone for their first points of the night. John Fauser would make the point after try and Greendale would make the scoreboard, but found themselves still trailing by a score of 13-7 and 5:35 left in the 1st half.

The Trojans would begin their next drive from their 34. Again, they were having problems handing the ball off and fumbled on the first play of which Greendale would recover on the Tosa 21.

Greendale was making another move when all of a sudden; Wood would accidently throw another interception that was returned 40 yards to the Trojan's 35.

Wauwatosa tried that jet option that they like to run and fumbled again only this time they recovered it but not before losing a lot of yards. They would end up having to punt from their 25 as they were looking at a 4th and 20.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Freshmen)After the punt, Greendale would take over from their 27. Seven plays later, Wood threw another touchdown pass to Michaels only this one was from 17-yards out. Fauser was knocked out of the game a few plays earlier so the Panthers would have to go for 2-points instead. On the snap of he ball, Wood would pitch the ball to his running back Brady Kais who made it to the end zone and just like that, Greendale now had the lead with a score of 15-13 and just :18 seconds left in the 1st half.

Greendale would kick and Tosa would run 1-play before the 1st half came to an end.

Greendale would kick to open the 2nd half. After the return, Tosa would have to start from their 39. They looked to be moving again but another botched handoff on their jet sweep caused them to go the other way. They found themselves punting from Greendale's 43 as they were looking at a 4th and 18.

This time, the snapper for Tosa launched it over the punter's head but he did manage to tack it down and get the ball off but the punt wasn't pretty by any means.

Greendale would take over on their 25. They would string 6-plays together before being forced to punt from their 44. With Fauser unable to play, Josh Michaels would do the punting. After a good snap, he would kick almost a perfect spiral that went over the return man's head and rolled all the way to the end zone for a touchback.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Freshmen)Tosa would have to start from their 20. Four plays later, they would get off a monster pass play that went for 54-yards for another Trojan touchdown. They would line up for the PAT but on the snap of the ball, the holder flipped the ball over his head to the kicker who was then tackled immediately so the score would be Wauwatosa 19, Greendale 15 with 3:38 left in the 3rd quarter.

After the kick, Greendale would begin from their 25. It was here that the wheels started to come loose as Wood accidently threw another interception. Tosa would now take over on Greendale's 32.

Four plays later, Tosa would score again on an inside trap play with one of their speedsters from 31-yards out. The kick would hit the crossbar and fall backwards so the score was now 25-15 with 2:38 left in the 3rd.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would take over from their 33. They ended up going backwards and were forced to punt from their 25.

After another nice punt by Michaels, Tosa would have to start from their 30. They looked to be driving when again they fumbled an exchange and lost a lot of yards. They would end up having to punt from their 35 after 8-plays.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Freshmen)Greendale got a little break when the punter had to get a bad snap and inadvertently went to his knees so that meant that Greendale would get the ball at that spot. However, then a flag came flying in a half hour later as an official from the other side of the field said that a Greendale player came in a little hard and hit the punter when he was on the ground. I guess the official that was watching the play from 10 yards away missed that call. To me it looked like more of a continuation play as the Panther player maybe wasn't certain it the punter was down or not but who am I anyway. They would march off 15-yards from that spot so that meant the Panthers would be starting from their 36 instead.

Three plays later, Wood who spent the whole night running for his life when he was trying to pass, would inadvertently throw another interception. Tosa would now have the ball on their 45.

Wauwatosa's speed would come out again for 3 plays later; they would run another trap play up the middle from 55-yards out and scored. It looked like the ball carrier wasn't even touched this time. The extra point try was no good so Tosa now lead 31-15 with 5:37 now left in the game.

After the kick, Greendale would start from their 32. They would run 6-plays before turning the ball over on downs on Tosa's 47-yard line.

Greendale at Wauwatosa West (Freshmen)On their very first play, they would run another inside trap and go untouched for a huge 55-yard run into the end zone. This time they would make the kick so now Tosa was up 38-15 with 3:31 left in the game.

Greendale would start their next drive from their 28. Nine plays later, Wood would hook up with Braxton Joehnk for an 11-yard scoring strike. The try for 2-points failed making the score 38-21 in favor of Tosa with 1:28 left in the game.

The Panther's would try an on-side kick, which didn't meet the required 10-yards so Wauwatosa would take over on Greendale's 47. The Trojan coaching staff now had their 2-team offense in the game. They would fumble on their first play so Greendale would take over on their 48.

The Panthers would run 4-plays before the clock would finally come to an end.

Greendale would come up short this week as they would lose to a very fast Wauwatosa team 38-21. The Panther's just didn't match up to Tosa's speed very well. The freshmen have just one more game left next Thursday as they will host the Cudahy Packers. That game is scheduled for 5:30pm.

Everything Is Cooling Off Except The Panthers!
R. A. Mattrisch - 10/3/11

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)We must be getting close to the end of the football season. Why do I say that? Because when I look at the trees around the football field, they are no longer green. They are shades of yellows, oranges, and reds. That always makes a pretty picture from the stands. Of course the best picture is when you include two football teams duke'n it out on the field as well. That was the case this past Monday night as the varsity reserve Wauwatosa West Trojans were in town to take on the Greendale Panthers. If you would have taken a picture of the scoreboard at the end of the game, you would have noticed that it said 42-24 in favor of Greendale. The Panthers jumped out early and often capitalizing on Tosa turnovers and mistakes. I would have to say that this was a better game to watch because it had all sorts of big plays that got you out of your seat. The only thing I realized after the game was that there is now only one game left. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE THE HECK THE SEASON WENT? They say that the older you get, the faster time flies. That can't be the case with me because I'm only 28. In fact, I have been 28 for the past 23 years. Oh well, I guess all good things eventually come to an end. I will miss watching these guys play.

As for what's up next? That would be winter. I love winter! I love freezing my pie-wagon off. Nothing makes me more happy then getting up on a Monday morning to find a snow drift up to my belt buckle blocking the cars in the drive way... and what about the ice? I love that thrill you get when you hit the brakes and the car keeps going through the intersection. The ultimate, however, has to be when you have a week's vacation on a tropical island and you're all packed and ready to go and then the airport closes because it's the start of a 3-day blizzard. It doesn't get any better than that! This is why I live here in Wisconsin.

Wauwatosa would be kicking first to start the game. After a modest return, Greendale would set up on their 23 with Josh Ringelberg at the helm. They would put an 11-play scoring drive together as Doug St. Onge would take an inside reverse handoff and score from 6-yards out. St. Onge who also does the kicking would miss the kick making the score 6-0 with 4:51 left in the 1st quarter of play.

The Panther specialty teams would get in the act on the ensuing kick as they would smother the return man and forced a fumble of which the cats would recover. This meant that Ringelberg & company would have to get back to work starting on Tosa's 40-yard line.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Get to work they did for on their very first play from scrimmage, Ringelberg would throw a perfect pass to a screaming Doug St Onge for a quick strike 40-yard touchdown pass. The Panther coaching staff would ask the offense to put in a little overtime as they would line up for a 2-point conversion try. On the snap of the ball, Ringelberg would take a 3-step drop and throw a laser to Gabe Kaliebe on a slant route. The score would now change to read 14-0 with 4:36 left in the 1st quarter.

The Trojans would finally start their first offensive drive of the night from their 41. They seemed to like running their speed option as they would run that several times in a row. It worked because 7-plays later they would cross the goal line from 7-yards out for their first points of the night. Instead of kicking, they would line up for 2 and convert making the score 14-8 with 1:07 still left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would begin from their 30. They would put another scoring drive together as Ringelberg would toss a 13-yard touchdown pass to David Johnson completing a 6-play 70-yard drive. St. Onge would make his kick making the score 21-8 with 8:14 now left in the 2nd quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Tosa would end up starting from their 31. On their very first play, the quarterback would mishandle the snap. As he was trying to get to the ball, 3 Panther defenders would jump on him. When the pile was cleared, Greendale would come up with the ball on Tosa's 16.

Six plays later, Panther running back Jake Zywicki would take a pitch and sprinted into the end zone from 3-yards out. The point after try was good and Greendale now lead 28-8 with 5:13 left in the 1st half.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)After the Panther kick, Tosa would start from their 37. They would run 3-plays and were looking at a 4th and 3. They would decide to gamble and go for it which didn't work out so good as half the Panther defense jumped on the ball carrier forcing the Trojans to turn the ball over on downs on the Tosa 41.

Greendale wasn't going to capitalize on this turnover for they ended up giving the ball right back to the Trojans as Ringelberg would accidently throw an interception. Tosa now had the ball on their 22.

This time the cat's defense would hold the Trojans to 3-plays forcing them to punt the ball back to the Panthers.

After the punt, Greendale would take over on their 36. On the very next play, Ringelberg would throw another interception so Tosa would now have the ball 1st and 10 on Greendale's 35.

Wauwatosa would run 4-plays before the 1st half came to an end.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers would kick to start the 2nd half. After the return, Tosa would start from their 43. They ended up going the wrong way and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

After the return, Greendale would start from their 21. Seven plays later, Ringelberg would find Cody Kmetz on a 20-yard slant route for another Panther touchdown. The PAT kick was good making the score 35-8 with 6:44 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Trojans would begin their next drive on their 28. They would run 8-plays and score on with a 5-yard touchdown pass. They would go for 2 again and get it making the score 35-16 with 3:56 left in the 3rd.

The Trojans tried to catch the Panthers off guard as they would attempt an onside kick. They would get the ball but it did not go the required 10-yards so Greendale would take over on Tosa's 49.

For the first time in the game, Greendale would have to punt from the 50 as they would go 3 and out. When the ball was snapped, it ended up going way over St. Onge's head so he had to run like a deer to get the ball. After he did finally get it, instead of trying to kick it, he would use his athletic ability to try and get the 1st down on his own. After running about 30-yards he would finally get tackled just a few yards short of the 1st down marker so Tosa would get the ball on their 45. It was a great effort to say the least.

On the very first play, Panther defender Chad Newton would intercept the ball giving it right back to the offense on Tosa's 46.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)It would only take 5-plays for the home team to hit pay dirt again as Ringelberg would throw a slant pass to Kaliebe from 10-yards out. St Onge would make the kick making the score 42-16 with :46 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

The Trojans would get the ball back and start from their 27. They would run 3-plays before looking at a 4th and 15. They had no choice but to punt the ball away again.

After the punt, Greendale would start from their 39. They would run 7-plays before they were  forced to punt from near midfield.

After the return, Wauwatosa would start from their 15. They would try 3 longs passes in a row of which all were incomplete. They would end up punting from their 15.

After the return, Greendale would now own the ball on Tosa's 43. They would fail to get a 1st down and ended up turning the ball over on downs on Tosa's 39.

Wauwatosa West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)On their very first play from scrimmage, they would run a screen pass to one of their speedsters who would get loose and out run everyone completing a 61-yard scoring play. The 2-point conversion was good making the score 42-28 with 1:28 left in the game.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would take over from their 35. All they had to do was run 3-plays before the game would finally come to an end.

The Panthers would defeat the Trojans 42-24. Their record will now go to 7-1 for the season with one game left to play. Next week they will close their 2011 season at home against the Cudahy Packers. The game is scheduled for 5:30pm.

Passed With Flying Colors!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/30/11

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Coming into this season, the Panther's pass defense or to be more specific, the secondary was a concern for the coaches. The reason being was that everyone was new, which obviously meant that they would be untested. In fact, the coaches didn't even know who would be playing the various secondary positions, which by the way are probably the hardest positions to play. Luckily, there aren't a lot of passing in this conference, which makes it a little easier. However, there is one team that likes to throw a lot. We're talking between 30 and 40 times a game. That would be none other then the Whitnall Falcons. They run a spread attack like Greendale does but their pass to run ratio is way different then Greendale's.

There is a saying out there that goes, "Three things happen when you pass the ball and two of them are bad." That of course being an incompletion, which costs you a down. And the worst on the two, the interception that costs you possession. That was the problem that the visiting Falcons had Friday night as they threw 41 times and only completed 19 for a 46.34% passing percentage. There were 11 dropped balls that should have been easily caught and 2 interceptions that Greendale turned into points. In the end, Greendale's defense would rise to the challenge and hold the Falcons to just one touchdown for the game as they would go on to win 40-7. I would have to think that the secondary is no longer a concern as they passed the ultimate test Friday night with flying colors. In fact, the whole defense is passing with flying colors as they are the stingiest Woodland Conference team allowing a total of 42 points, which averages to 7-points a game. For the season, they allowed 59 points, which averages to 8.42 points per game. I would be remise if I didn't mention that 1 touchdown was actually given up by the offense in the first non-conference game against Franklin. Nonetheless, "Offense wins games and defense wins championships!" That's the recipe for getting it done.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)Whitnall would be kicking first to start the game. That kick would go out of bounds so Greendale would start from their 35. Right out of the shoot, it looked as though Greendale would attack on the ground. They would run 14-plays before Panther quarterback Sam Brick would sneak it in from 2-yards out. Kicker Brett Nether would split the poles and Greendale would draw first blood by a score of 7-0 with 6:00 left in the opening quarter of play.

After the ensuing kick and return, the Falcons would end up starting their first drive of the evening on their 35. Whitnall likes to throw the ball so the Panthers secondary was expected to get a work out tonight. Thirteen plays later, the Falcons would reach the end zone as Travis Karweik would take a handoff up the middle and sprint 19-yards for the score. The point after try was good tying the game up at 7's with 1:24 left in the 1st quarter.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)After another poor kick that ended up short, Panther return man Gaelan Seibold would make his presence known as he snatched the ball up after a bounce and sprinted around to the left side of the field for a 40-yard return. The Panthers would now start with excellent field position on Whitnall's 36-yard line. They would work the ball all the way down to the 4 before an errant snap sailed over Brick's head. Sam would recover the ball but not before losing 20-yards. This would put the Panthers in a 3 and goal from the 24. On the very next play, Brick would roll to his right and find Nethery in the right corner of the end zone for another Panther touchdown. Nethery would follow that score up with another, as he would convert the point after try making the score 14-7 with 10:22 now left in the 2nd quarter.

After the following return, the Falcons would start this drive from their 24. They would run 8-plays all the way to the Panther 14 before they were looking at a 4th and 5. At this point, the Falcon's coaching decided to send in the field goal unit for a 24-yard field goal attempt. After the snap, Greendale's David Michaels would come off the edge and blocked the kick. The ball would end up rolling all the way to Whitnall's 48 where Greendale would take over 1st and 10.

The green machine could only put 6-plays together before turning the ball over on downs at Whitnall's 24.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)The game of football is all about making plays and that's what Greendale's shutdown corner Mitchell Brees did on Whitnall's second play from scrimmage as he intercepted a Falcon pass on the 48 and zigzagged his way all the way to the Whitnall 12.

On the Panther's very first play, running back Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski would take a handoff up the middle for a 12-yard touchdown run. Nethery would make his kick and Greendale was now starting to put some distance between them and the Falcons by a score of 21-7 and 3:59 left in the 1st half.

The birds of prey would start their next drive from their 25 after the ensuing kick. All of a sudden it looked like Whitnall couldn't catch the ball like they were earlier, which ended up costing them. They would put 9-plays together before having to punt from their 43.

After the kick, Greendale would take over on their 30. They could only gain 8-yards before looking at a 4th down. With less than a minute left on the clock, Panther Head Coach Rob Stoltz would send in his ace in the hole punter in Nethery to punt the ball away. After a good snap, he would kick the ultimate dream punt as the ball would travel 50-yards in the air and then roll 20 more yards all the way to the 1 foot line before the Panther cover guys downed the ball.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)With the entire offense lined up in the end zone and only :45 seconds left in the half, you would expect that the Falcons would run something safe and conservative because one slip up here could result in another Panther score. That wouldn't be the case, as they would try a deep pass that was almost intercepted by Brees again. They would run 4 more plays before the half would finally come to an end.

The Panthers would have to kick to open the 2nd half. After the return, Whitnall would start from their 26. They would have to punt from their 23 going 3 and out as passes continued to be dropped by their receivers.

Greendale would end up starting from their 33 following the kick. On their 5th play, Panther running back Mike Scheidt would take a handoff up the middle and work his way to the left sideline where he would turn on the jets and out run everybody for a 54-yard touchdown run. Nethery would have a rare miss on the point after try so the score would end up 27-7 with 8:11 left in the 3rd quarter.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)The Falcons would start from their 20 after the end zone shot by Nethery. It was the same story as before as the Falcons would have to kick from their 33 after 5-plays.

After the kick and roll, Greendale would start from their 22. Seven plays later, Garcia-Bankowski would take a pitch and take off up the field picking up blockers all over the place on his way to the end zone completing a 36-yard scoring run. Nethery would make the kick and it was now looking like Greendale was taking control of this game with a score of 34-7 and 3:15 left in the 3rd.

Whitnall would again have to start from their 20 compliments of Nethery's end zone shot. When you pass the ball, three things can happen and two of them are bad. That was the case because on the second play of the drive, Seibold would intercept the ball for Greendale and take it all the way to the Falcon 2-yard-line. Whitnall would catch a huge break, however, as there was a penalty flag way back so the Panthers would end up on the bird's 44 instead.

On the very first play of the drive, Greendale would insert the dagger as Brick would drop back and throw a perfect strike to Nethery running down the middle seam for another Panther touchdown. In an attempt to get the running clock going, Greendale would go for 2 instead of kicking. That didn't work so the score was now 40-7 with 1:35 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Falcons would begin on their 20 after the ensuing kick. They would run 10-plays before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 5-yard line.

The Panthers would run 5-plays getting to their 31 before Jake Zywicki would fumble the ball to Whitnall.

The Falcons would run 4-plays before they ended up fumbling the ball into the end zone of which Michaels would scoop up and head the other way. He would only make it to the 7 so this is where Greendale's second offense would take over.

At quarterback now for Greendale was Josh Ringelberg. Looking at a 3rd and long, he would run a screen play to his brother Jack who would catch the ball and run 73-yards all the way to Whitnall's 23. They would run 7 more plays before turning the ball over on downs on Whitnall's 14.

Whitnall at Greendale (Varsity)The Falcons had enough time for 8-plays before the game would finally come to an end.

The Panthers would win this game by a score of 40-7. Greendale seemed better rounded offensively as they were able to run and pass affectively utilizing all of the weapons at their disposal. Whitnall likes to live by the pass but you can die by the pass very fast if you're not carefull. They just had too many dropped passes and penalties that hurt them all night long.

With that win, the Panthers are guaranteed the right of being called the 2011 Woodland Conference Champions! The worst that could happen is they would end up sharing it with Eisenhower or Greenfield who only have 2 losses. If Greendale (6-1) wins one of the last two remaining games, they would be the sole conference champions by themselves. They will start with the Wauwatosa West Trojans (1-6) next week. This is a road game that is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.

What Rain?
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/29/11

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)The weather around here lately has been kind of interesting to say the least. We don't get rain all summer long, and then we get rain everyday for almost two weeks straight. Go figure! That's do in part to this spinning toilet bowl low pressure system that has been stuck over Wisconsin for the past week or so. The reason I refer to it as a toilet bowl low is because it reminds me of the spinning water when you flush a toilet. It just spins in the same place the whole time.

Of course playing football in the rain is part of the game. Playing football in the mud use to be a part of the deal at Greendale but that will no longer be an issues thanks to the new artificial turf they have. Trust me when I say that if we still had the grass, the field would have been nothing but a flat mud pie by now. How do I know that? Because I have played and coached on it. Sometimes it was so bad that it looked like a huge tray of brownies. It sure didn't taste like brownies though. The one thing you never wanted to do was take your mouth guard out of your mouth. That's because it usually involved using your hands. You see your hands were all covered with a mixture of mud, dead grass clippings, bird poop, weed killer, fertilizer, and probably someone else's gob. Don't worry mom! Now all the guys have to worry about is the rubber pellets and those are easy to spit out.

At any rate, in keeping with my rather lucrative news reporting contract, I got all of you that didn't want to get wet at Thursday's freshmen game covered. This week the Whitnall Falcons were in town to play Greendale. At least the Falcons were there on time, which was more then I could say for the referees. They all had the game starting at 6:30 so they ended up a little late. Eventually everyone showed up and the game would begin. When the game ended, it was another case like the varsity reserve had as Greendale totally dominated and won by a score of 39-0. If I were a Whitnall fan, I would be concerned because their varsity reserve team and their freshmen team both failed to score any points. That's not good when you're looking towards the future.

Believe it or not, the sun in all its glory was out during warm-ups, but you could see some nasty clouds off in the distance. It was more or less going to be how hard was it going to rain because everyone knew they were going to get wet before the night was over.

Whitnall would be kicking first to start the game. After the return, Greendale would start from their 49. Six plays later, Greendale's quarterback David Wood would pitch the ball to his big running back Brady Kais who would then bust his way into the ends zone from 16-yards out. John Fauser's kick was no good so Greendale would jump on the on the board first with a score of 6-0 and 7:20 left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick and return, the Falcons would start from their 33. Two plays later, Greendale's John Hartung would step in front of a Whitnall pass and return it 35-yards the other way for another Panther touchdown. This time Fauser would kick it through the rain and between the uprights as Greendale would now add to their total with a score of 13-0 and 6:29 left in the opening quarter.

After a nice little return, Whitnall would start from their 49. The Falcons ended up going backwards and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

After a poor kick, Greendale would begin this drive from their 43. They would hook 13-plays together before turning the ball over on downs just 3-yards short of the goal line.

Whitnall now had the ball with their backs against the wall. They would squeeze off 1-play before the 1st quarter came to an end.

After switching sides, the Falcons would run two more plays before Greendale's Josh Michaels would step in front of another Whitnall pass at the Falcon's 15.

The Panthers couldn't do anything as the weather was now going down the tubes rather quickly. They would turn the ball over on downs at the Falcon 15-yard line.

Two plays later, the Falcons would try a flair pass but Panther linebacker Sam Sabinash seemed to appear out of thin air and actually intercepted the ball and ran untouched the other way for a 12-yard touchdown return. Fauser would make the kick making the score 20-0 with 7:09 left in the 2nd quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Whitnall would take over on their 49. Two plays later, the Falcons would turn the ball over again as the quarterback would fumble of which Sabinash would recover at midfield for Greeendale.

Seven plays later, Greendale would cross the goal line again as Panther running back Jordan Deloney would haul the mail from 2-yards out. The extra point kick was blocked so the score would end up being 26-0 with 3:21 left in the 1st half.

Whitnall who as yet to make any kind of threat would begin from their 45 after the ensuing kick. They lost a yard on that series and were forced to punt going 3 and out.

After a nice kick with an even better roll, Greendale would end up starting from their 4-yard line. They would run 6-plays before the 1st half would finally come to an end.

Greendale would have to kick to start the 2nd half. After the return, Whitnall would start from their 38. This time they managed to get 1-yard before being forced to punt going 3 and out.

After the return, Greendale would now have the ball on Whitnall's 49. Six plays later, Wood would hook up with Fauser at the left side of the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Fauser's kick was wide to the left so the score would now be 32-0 with 5:57 left in the 3rd quarter.

After a short kick and return, the struggling Falcons would end up starting from Greendale's 47. Three plays later Greendale's "Sabin-nasty" (Sabinash) would collide with the running back in the back field causing a fumble of which teammate Chris Phillips would recover on the Panther's 36.

Greendale would march all the way to the Falcon's 16 in 10-plays before turning the ball over on downs.

The Falcons would end up staring at a 4th and 4 and would go for it, but Greendale's defense would hold so they would take over 1st and 10 from Whitnall's 20.

Whitnall at Greendale (Freshmen)Two plays later, Deloney would take a handoff up the middle and score from 2-yards out. Fauser would convert the point after try making the score 39-0 with 8:15 left in the game. This would engage the 35-point running clock rule.

The Falcons would take control of the ball and start from their 25 after the ensuing kick. Two plays later, the Greendale defense would snag a tipped pass for another Whitnall turnover so they would take over 1st and 10 from Whitnall's 39.

The Panthers would string together 5-plays before stalling out on the Falcon's 6-yard line.

Whitnall would run 4-plays before the game finally came to an end.

Greendale would win by a score of 39-0. This win would improve their record to 4-2 for the year. They will take to the road next week as they will pay a visit to take on the Wauwatosa West Trojans. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm. That is of course the refs show up on time.

Just When You Think You've Seen Everything
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/26/11

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)At the ripe young age of 51, I have seen my share of football at all levels. I'm talking the NFL all the way down to flag football. I've also coached football for 20 years as well. Last night I headed out to Whitnall High School to cover the varsity reserve game between the Greendale Panthers and the Whitnall Falcons. I obviously knew what Greendale had and I was about to find out what Whitnall had. OK... I didn't think this was possible but I guess it is. When the game finally was over, I reviewed my stats to discover that the Falcons did not get one 1st down the entire game. Usually a team ends up picking up at least one via a penalty or something but not tonight. Because of that stat, you can probably pretty much figure out how the game went and what the final score probably was. In another shorten game via the 35-point running clock mercy rule; Greendale went on to defeat Whitnall 41-0. The game was not that much fun to watch if you like to watch competitive football like I do. I'm not sure what the story was so I will avoid any speculation. I would like to point out that I always base next year's season on what I see this year at the lower level games. You link that to the returning players from this year's teams and you can put a very solid predication together as to what will happen next year. Right now I would say that Whitnall may be in trouble.

Because this game lacked certain aspects, this game recap summery will be somewhat abbreviated and might come off kind of strange. You'll see what I mean as you start reading it.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)Whitnall would line up to kick to start the game. Right off the bat, they would try an on-side kick which failed so the Panthers would start from midfield for their first drive of the game. After two perfect passes that were thrown by Josh Ringelberg were dropped by his wide receivers, he would try throwing to his running back Jake Zywicki instead. On a well designed screen play, he would catch the ball and zigzag his way all the way down to the Falcon's 9-yard line. On the very next play, Ringelberg would keep it himself and sprint around the right side for the game's first score of the evening. Panther kicker Doug St. Onge would drill it through the uprights making the score 7-0 with 9:09 left in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Whitnall would start their first drive of the evening from their 27... 3 and out... punt!

After the kick, Greendale would begin from their 48. Two plays later, Zywicki would take a handoff and skedaddle 40-yards to the end zone for another Panther touchdown. St. Onge would make his kick and Greendale was now on top 14-0 with 6:55 left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)The Falcons would begin from their 20 after St Onge reached the end zone on the kickoff... 3 and out... punt!

After the punt return, Greendale would start at the 50. Eight plays later, Ringelberg would end up throwing an interception in the end zone so Whitnall would get the ball on their 20... 3 and out... punt!

After the punt return, Greendale would start this drive from the Falcon's 40. Two plays later, Ringelberg would hook up with Cody Kmetz for a 40-yard scoring strike. The kick was no good making the score 20-0 as the 1st quarter came to an end.

After the ensuing kick, Whitnall would end up starting from their 35... 3 and out... Punt!

After the punt and return, Greendale would set up the offense on the Falcon's 43-yard line. They would connect 7-plays together before turning the ball over on downs on Whitnall's 18... 3 and out... punt!

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)After the return, the Panther's would begin their next drive from the Falcon's 42. Six plays later, St. Onge would catch a Ringelberg pass on a 19-yard bubble route for another Panther score. The point after try was good and Greendale was now leading 27-0 with 1:44 left in the 1st half of play.

After the ensuing kick, Whitnall would start from their 29... 3 and out... no punt though because the clock ran out to end the 1st half.

The Panthers would kick to start the 2nd half. After the return, Whitnall would start from their 36... 3 and out... punt!

Things got a little exciting on this particular punt play as Greendale's Sam Bauer would take the kick and sprint 70-yards for another Panther touchdown. St. Onge would convert the extra point try making the score 34-0 with 7:55 left in the 3rd quarter.

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)After the ensuing kick and return, Whitnall would take over on their 23. On the very first play, Ringelberg who was now in on defense would intercept a pass and take it to the Falcon's 24 where Greendale would now go on offense.

On the very first play, Zywicki would take a handoff and run straight ahead all the way to the end zone for another Panther score. The point after try was good and Greendale was now on top 41-0 with 7:07 left in the 3rd quarter. As a result of the score, the clock would now continuously run because of the 35-point mercy rule.

After the kick and return, Whitnall would set up their offense on their 31... 3 and out... punt!

After the return, The Panthers would start from Whitnall's 47. All they were doing now was just running the ball up the middle getting 4 or 5 yards a crack. Six plays later they would have to punt for the first time in the game from their 46.

After a huge punt by St. Onge, Whitnall would take over on their 19... 3 and out... punt!

Greendale at Whitnall (Varsity Reserve)Wait a minute! Greendale would end up fumbling the return so Whitnall would get the ball back on the 50-yard line. When I asked an official how that would be officially scored, he said that it wound be a fumble on a change of possession so it would not be considered a 1st down even though the Falcons still had the ball with a new set of downs. Anyway... 4 and out on downs!

Greendale would run 4-plays before the game would finally come to an end.

The Panthers would end up defeating the Falcons 41-0. Watching a game like this was almost kind of painful in a way. I found myself feeling bad for the players on both teams. Nonetheless, it happened and it's over. Greendale will now host the Wauwatosa West Trojans next Monday night. It's hard to believe but this will be the second last game of the season for these guys. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.

Never Judge A Book By Its Cover
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/23/11

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)A long time ago when I was growing up, I remember hearing the saying, "Never judge a book by its cover." When you break that statement down, it simply means that the content of the book doesn't always reflect the way the cover of the book may appear. This statement could also be analogized to other areas as well. Take a football team as an example. I heard about the size of Greenfield well before I got to the game. When I did get there, I was amazed that a team could have that many big guys on a team at the same time. My first thought was, "Oh boy! This could be a problem." Greendale has their share of big guys, but nowhere near the numbers that Greenfield had. Between Greenfield's size, and the fact that they must have suited up their varsity reserves and freshmen, I would be lying if I didn't seem intimidated.

To make a long story short, the cover I saw was not reflective of the content and the content came up short because by the end of the game, Greendale looked much lighter on their feet and quicker. This would ultimately be Greenfield's demise as the Panthers would defeat the Hawks by a score of 35-3. The game started out close in the 1st half but it was just a matter of time before Greendale's big play offense would explode.

Greenfield would be kicking first to start the game. After the return, Greendale would end up starting their first drive of the evening from their 27. In an attempt to keep Greenfield on their heels, they would go with a no huddle and tested all areas of the line of scrimmage. Six plays later, quarterback Sam Brick would run a play action fake and connect with his big tight end Kennedy Ringelberg who caught the ball in between 2 defenders for a 27-yard touchdown reception. Senior kicker Brett Nethery would split the uprights-making the score 7-0 with 9:59 displayed on the clock in the 1st quarter of play.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)After the ensuing kick and return, Greenfield would start from their 19. As they lined up on the line, you could easily notice the size difference, as Greenfield was much bigger. The Panthers would have to offset that size difference with their quickness. That was very apparent as the Hawks could only string 7-plays together before they would be forced to punt from their 23.

After a nice return by Ringelberg, Greendale would begin this drive from the Hawks 47. They would run 7-plays before turning the ball over on downs on Greenfield's 26-yard line.

The Hawks would bring out their wishbone offense and attempt another drive. That didn't happen here as Greendale forced them to kick going 3 and out.

After a beautiful punt and a fair catch, Greendale would begin from their 36. After 6-plays marred by a couple of penalties, the Panthers would be forced to punt from their 36. Nethery who also handles the punting chores would get off a huge kick that rolled all the way to the Hawk's 15.

Here again Greenfield could not sustain a drive as a result of Greendale's speed so they ended up having to punt after 9-plays.

The Panther offense would now come back out on the field and start from their 27. They ran off 2-plays taking the ball to their 45. All of a sudden a bad snap would occur that forced Brick to track it down but not before losing 20-yards on the play. Looking at a 3rd down and a mile, the Panthers would elect to try a quick kick that didn't go to far so Greenfield would take over at midfield.

It was here when Greenfield started to do what Greendale was worried about. They started pounding the ball behind their big offensive line in an attempt to wear Greendale down. They would sew together 12-plays taking the ball all the way to the Panther 15 before the Panthers were finally able to stop them. With one time out left, Greenfield would wait until there was :05 seconds left before calling it and then sent their field goal unit out onto the field. They would make the kick making the score 7-3 with just :02 seconds left on the clock.

Greenfield would then kick to the Panthers who would then just take a knee to end the 1st half of play.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)The Hawks who seemingly had the momentum would be receiving first to start the 2nd half. After the return, they would start from their 25. The Panthers would only allow 6-plays before forcing the Hawks to punt from their 38.

After another beautiful kick, Greendale would see if they could sustain a drive, which they haven't done since the first one of the game. They would be starting from their 26. Three plays later, another errant snap would get by Brick. With the ball heading for the Greenfield goal line, Panther running back Mike Scheidt would hustle to get it and was then tackled on his own 5-yard line. This would make it 4th down so that meant that Nethery would be kicking from the back of the end zone. After a good snap, Nethery would unleash the lethal weapon and kick the ball all the way to the Hawks 40-yard line. When doing the math from where he was standing, he ended up kicking the ball 68-yards, which was a huge shift in field position compared to where they just were.

The Hawks would now bring their offense out onto the field. After a close call with one fumble, they would run two more plays before they fumbled again only this time Greendale's Nate Miller would fall on it giving it back to his offense on their 36.

The Panthers who seemed to be their own worst enemy thus far would line up on their spread offense. This time they would get it together as they would mix it up taking it all the way to the end zone, as Scheidt would scamper in from 4-yards out. Nethery would make the kick and Greendale was now up 14-3 with :59 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

Nethery would reach the end zone on his kick so Greenfield would have to start from their 20. Behind some great secondary play, the Panthers would force the Hawks to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale would spread out the spread (LOL) on their 37. Two plays later, Brick would hook up with Ringelberg again down the middle for a huge 51-yard scoring strike. Nethery would kick it through the uprights and out of the park making the score 21-3 with 11:52 now left in the game.

The Hawks were now in trouble for they aren't known for their big play capability. They would just assume pound it if they can. The problem there is that this uses a lot of clock, which was slowly becoming in short supply.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)After another close call with a fumble on the return, the Hawks would have to start from their 15. With momentum clearly on Greendale's side, their defense was now playing with adrenaline running through their veins. They would push the Hawks back forcing them to punt from deep in their own end zone.

After a poor kick, Greendale would take over on the Hawk's 35. Five plays later, Brick would roll to his left and throw a perfect pass in the direction of none other then Kennedy Ringelberg for his third touchdown reception of the night. The point after try was good and Greendale was now on their way to blowing this game wide open with a score of 28-3 and 8:14 left in the game.

The Panther's specialty teams would take care of their part of the bargain pinning the Hawks deep on their own 16-yard line. It now looked like the Panthers had their second wind as there were at least four Panther players on every tackle. They would force Greenfield to punt again as they went 3 and out.

Greendale would take over on their 41. They would run 2-plays before Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski would take a handoff and did some kind of a magic trick to get loose and score from 41-yards out. Nethery would bang it between the poles making the score a now rather lopsided 35-3 with 5:11 left in the game.

Greendale at Greenfield (Varsity)The now deflated Hawks would begin their next drive from the 20. They would run 10-plays all on the ground before the game would finally come to an end.

The final score would be Greendale 35-Greenfield 3. Going into this game, Greendale knew that they would be undersized so they were banking on their speed and athletic ability to offset that. That appeared to be exactly what happened, as Greenfield just didn't seem to be able to match up with them very well. The Panther's defensive coaching staff also knew that they needed to get plenty of helmets to the ball and that their players had to stay disciplined with their assignments in stopping Greenfield's wishbone offense.

Greendale (5-1) will now return home to play the Whitnall Falcons (3-3). This will be Greendale's homecoming and should be an exciting game so seats in the stands should be filled. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

And The Beat Goes On!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/22/11

Greendale at Greenfield (Freshmen)Maybe a better title for this article would have been "And The Beating Goes on!" The reason being is that this is what the Greendale Panther freshmen football team did Thursday night against their host, the Greenfield Hawks. The Panther's defense made life very miserable for the Hawks and the cat's offense could do pretty much anything they wanted as they defeated the Hawks by a score of 41-6.

The Hawks were their own worst enemy all night committing several turnovers and numerous penalties that just didn't help their cause any. Greendale on the other hand executed their offense to a tee under the quarterbackmenship of David Wood, and the high flying defense led by Sam Sabinash (aka: Sabin-nasty) who were attacking like starved animals and were hitting like Rocky Balboa was hitting that meat hanging at the processing plant in that old movie classic. Hummm! Old movie classic... I remember when that movie first came out! ..... Let's CHANGE the subject!

All I can tell you is that the freshmen team has traveled a long way from that first game they played in week one. I don't think I can recall being as inspired by a group of guys like this before. They have transformed themselves from boys to men in just 4 weeks and I have to believe that they aren't done yet. THAT'S what I love about the game of football especially here in Greendale!

Greendale would be kicking first to start the game. After a decent return, the Hawks would begin their first drive of the night from their 49. Greendale was doing an excellent job of getting plenty of bodies to the ball-eventually forcing a 4th and 2. Greenfield would go for it but were thrown backward at the line of scrimmage so Greendale would take over 1st and 10 from their 43.

Greendale's offense would pick right up where the left off from last week-putting a nice 8-play scoring drive together that finished with a David Wood to Josh Michael pass completion from 10-yards out. John Fauser would convert the point after try giving Greendale the early lead by a score 7-0 with 4:19 left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale at Greenfield (Freshmen)After a monster kick and great coverage, Greendale would force the Hawks to start from their 15. Two plays later, Panther defensive back Brad Lachman would intercept a pass on the Hawk's 30 and return it all the way to the 9 where Greendale would be looking at a 1st and goal.

It would only take 1-play as Wood would pitch the ball to Panther running back Brady Kais around the right side who then did the 10-yard jaunt across the goal line for another Panther score. Fauser would bang it right down the middle and Greendale now found themselves on top 14-0 with 3:19 left in the opening quarter.

Greenfield would attempt to shake that off and start their next drive from their 30. Three plays later they were forced to line up for a punt as they were looking at a 4th and 6 from their 34.

After the return, Greendale would take over from their 35. Nine plays later, the Panthers were looking at a 4th and 6 from Greenfield's 16. On the very next play, Wood would drop back and hit Kais in the right flat on a perfectly executed screen pass. Kais would follow his blockers into the end zone for another Panther touchdown. Fauser's kick was true again and Greendale now added to their total making the score 21-0 with 8:27 now left in the 2nd quarter.

After a short kick and a good return, Greenfield would start with their best field position of the game at midfield. Three plays later, the birds of prey would fumble a toss of which Greendale would recover on the midfield stripe.

Greendale at Greenfield (Freshmen)While trying to move in for the kill, Greendale would go up top right off the bat, but Wood's pass would be slightly under thrown and would fall into the hands of a Greenfield defender on the Hawk's 25.

The Hawks offense would finally manage to get their first 1st down of the game on this drive. In fact they put 7-pays together before looking at a 4th and 8 from their 39. They would line up in their punt formation but on the snap of the ball, they would throw the dice and try a fake instead. The Panthers were not fooled and tackled the kicker who picked up 2-yards which wasn't nearly enough so Greendale would take over at the 41 on the Hawk's side of the field.

Three plays later, Wood would fake a hand off and then took off at a high rate of speed around the left side and scored from 23-yards out. The point after try was good making the score 28-0 with 2:45 left in the 1st half.

Greenfield would begin their next drive after the ensuing kick from their 38. The Panther D was now turning up the heat as they pushed the Hawks back forcing them to punt as they were looking at a 4th and 13.

Following the return, Greendale now had the ball at midfield with just :56 seconds left in the half. They would run 3-plays before the 1st half clock would finally run out.

Greendale at Greenfield (Freshmen)Things didn't go to well for the Hawks in the first half and they won't start out that well either for the 2nd half as they would have to kick to the Panthers to start the game. After the return, Greendale would begin this drive from their 36. Two plays later, Wood hooked up with Fauser, who made a great catch and then would follow that up with a huge run all the way to the Hawk's 8 completing a 42-yard pass play. Two plays later, Wood would found Fauser again running a slant in the end zone for Greendale's 5th touchdown of the game. This time Fauser would hit the left upright so Greenfield avoided a running clock as the score would only end up being 34-0 with 8:00 left in the 3rd quarter.

Greenfield would begin their next drive from their 22. It sort of looked like the Hawks were starting to move the ball, but on the third play; Greendale's Sam Sabinash (Sabin-nasty) busted his way through the offensive line and dropped the quarterback for a 10-yard loss forcing them to punt once again.

This time, however, Greendale would make the mistake as the punt returner tried to pick up a loose ball instead of leaving it. He would mishandle it and fumbled of which Greenfield would recover on their 44.

Greendale at Greenfield (Freshmen)Whatever that Panther player had, he must have gave it to the Hawk player as he would fumble the ball right back to the Panthers. Eric Martinson would recover for the cats at midfield.

Greendale would now start their next march. They sewed together 7-plays before that fumbling disease would hit the Panthers again as they coughed it up 8-yards short of Greenfield's goal line.

The Hawks would attempt to get back on track. They didn't get too far before looking at a 4th and 2 from their 14. Instead of punting, desperation must have set in as they would go for it knowing that if they didn't get it, they were pretty much giving Greendale a touchdown. On the snap of the ball, Greendale's defense stood up the whole front line of Greenfield and stopped the ball carrier 1 yard short of the stick. Greendale would now take over 1st and 10 from the Hawk's 18.

Greendale at Greenfield (Freshmen)It was now the start of the 4th quarter and Greendale found themselves on the 1-yard line. On the snap of the ball, Greendale's Jordan Deloney would cross the goal line for another Panther score. Fauser would make his kick and Greendale was now all over the Hawks 41-0 with 9:56 left in the game. Because the lead was more then 35-points, the running clock rule would now go into effect.

After the ensuing kick, Greenfield would take over from their 33. Seven plays later, the Hawks finally got loose around the right side and ran 20-yards for their first score of the night. They would try for a 2-point conversion and failed so the score was now 41-6 in favor of Greendale with 6:09 left in the game. Because they missed the extra point, the 35-point rule would still remain in effect.

Greendale at Greenfield (Freshmen)The Panthers would begin this drive from their 42 with 6:00 left in the game. They would run 7-plays before being forced to punt the ball away.

After the kick and return, Greenfield would take over on their 25. They would run 6-plays before the game finally came to an end.

Greendale would with big by a score of 41-6. They will return home next week as they will host the Whitnall Falcons. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.

The First Dent!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/19/11

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)How many of you have purchased a new car in your lifetime and would always make it a point of keeping it looking new for as long as possible? You would always take those precautions as to where you park it... who you would let drive it... the types of car washes you would take it too. All of these things were done just so that you could avoid that first dent... That ding that would ruin the perfect paint job and probably make you cry.

Well the car that was driven by the Greendale Panther varsity reserve football team has gone 3 years in the Woodland Conference without one ding or dent. They have gone 3 years in a row without a loss. That all changed Monday night as they finally got their first ding at the hands of the Greenfield Hawks on the home turf of Greendale's Stephen J. Gavinski Memorial Stadium. When the clock finally stopped rolling, Greendale found themselves on the short end of the stick as they would lose to a much bigger Greenfield team 21-7.

It more or less came down to two different styles of offenses. Greendale's offense is more of a quick strike-big play style because they like to pass a lot. Greenfield came in with a wishbone based offense and they just keep it on the ground and pound you for 3 or 4 yards a play the whole game long. Both work well but when you run the spread like Greendale does, you have to be able to execute. You have to be able to block! You have to be able to catch! You have to be able to throw! And you have to be able to run. If you can't do this, you are more than likely in trouble. That's what happened to the Panthers Monday night. There wasn't much of a running game, too many passes were dropped, and there were too many interceptions. Greenfield on the other hand came in and hammered on the Panther defense the whole game on their way to a victory. I'm not going to lie, it's a boring offense to watch but it gets the job done.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greenfield would be kicking first to start the game. After the return, Greendale would start from their 25-yard line. Just two plays later, Panther quarterback Josh Ringelberg would drop back... double pump, and then unleash the perfect pass to a screaming Cody Kmetz down the right side line completing a 77-yard scoring strike. Frankie Rutkowski would make the extra point try and Greendale would jump on the board first with a score of 7-0 at the 9:13 mark in the 1st quarter.

After the ensuing kick and return, Greenfield would take over on their 37. They could only hook together 5-plays before punting from midfield.

As a result of the punt reaching the end zone, Greendale would take over 1st and 10 from their 20. They managed to string 9-plays together-taking the ball all the way to the Hawk's 15 before turning the ball over on downs.

The Hawks would again bring their offense out onto the field. They would pound out 11-plays and score on a little fade route from 6-yards out. The extra point try was blocked so Greendale still maintained the lead with a score of 7-6 and 8:17 now left in the 2nd quarter.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers who have looked good thus far would now set up on their 30 following the kick and return. On the very first play of the drive, Ringelberg would end up throwing an interception so Greenfield would now take over on the Panther's 32.

The Hawks could not reach pay dirt as they would turn the ball over on downs on the Panther's 30-yard line.

The Panthers could only move the ball to their 42 before being forced to punt back to the birds.

After a nice punt and a huge roll by Greendale's Heath Cone, the Hawks would have to start from their own 3. The Panther defense held and forced Greenfield to punt from their 11.

After the kick, Greendale would be starting from Greenfield's 49. Three plays later, Ringelberg would wind up throwing another interception to Greenfield.

Five plays later, the Hawks would cross the goal line again on a 7-yard fade route in the left corner on the end zone. The Hawks would go for 2 and convert making the score 14-7 with just :56 seconds left in the 1st half. After the ensuing kick, Greendale would only get off 3-plays before the half would come to an end.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would have to kick to start the 2nd half. After the return, the Hawks would be starting from their 19. The fired up Panther defense held them to just 3-yards forcing them to punt from their 22.

After a nice little return, Greendale would be starting from their 47. Three plays later, Ringelberg would throw his 3rd interception of the game so Greenfield would take over 1st and 10 from their 31.

The Hawks would now go into their ground and pound game logging in 11-plays before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 22.

The Panthers now looked to be on track as they took the ball all the way to Greenfield's 15 in 8-plays. But here again, another interception was thrown so Greenfield would take over 1st and 10 from their 15.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Hawks picked up right where they left off putting a 9-play scoring drive together for a touchdown. The point after try was good-making the score 21-7 with 7:11 now left in the game.

The Panthers would begin their next drive from their 41. They would put 6-plays together before looking at a 4th and 5 from Greenfields 8-yard line. The pass was incomplete so Greenfield would take over from there.

At this point, all Greenfield was hoping for was being able to control the ball and not let Greendale have it anymore. Well that's exactly what happened as they put a 14-play drive together across the entire field to Greendale's 3 before the clock finally run out.

Greenfield at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The Panthers would suffer their first defeat of the season by losing to a very tough Greenfield team by a score of 21-7. The Hawks would end up running 66-plays to Greendale's 36-plays so that should give you an idea of how this game went. Credit needs to be given to the Panther defense for making the Hawks work for every inch they got but in the end, expecting to win a game with 4 turnovers and many miscues is very difficult to do. This also marks the varsity reserve's first conference loss in over 3 years. Without a doubt, that is quite an amazing accomplishment to say the least.

The Panthers will now hit the road and face the Whitnall Falcons. This game will start at 6:30pm instead of the normal 5:30.

Defense Steps Up To The Plate
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/16/11

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)So far this season, Greendale has not had too much trouble putting up enough points on the board to win. In the game against the visiting South Milwaukee Rockets last Friday night, that was a different story. With only being able to put up 14-points, the Panthers had to rely on their defense to win this game as they narrowly got by a tough South Milwaukee team 14-7.

South Milwaukee was one of the favorites coming into this season, but they suffered a surprising loss to Greenfield two weeks ago. That can be dangerous for opposing teams because that is all a team needs to turn them medieval. That didn't appear to be the case early in the game as Greendale put up two quick scores, but then it became reality, as South Milwaukee took control and owned the 2nd half. What ultimately hurt the Rockets were untimely penalties and failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Of course Greendale's defense had a little something to do with that too. Nonetheless, Greendale did what they had to do to remain undefeated in the Woodland Conference-Black Division.

South Milwaukee would kick first to start the game. After a short kick and a short return, Greendale would start their first drive of the night from their 29. They would slowly and methodically execute 8-plays before crossing the goal line, as quarterback Sam Brick would take it in from 5-yards out. Senior kicker Brett Nethery would easily convert the extra point kick and Greendale would jump on the scoreboard first with a score of 7-0 and 8:39 left in the opening quarter.

The Rockets would start their first drive of the game from their 18. They looked to be marching when all of a sudden; the Panther's defense dug in and started making plays. South Milwaukee would eventually be forced to punt from their 38.

Brick would set the offense up on their 45 after the return. They only managed 5-yards before being forced to punt the ball away.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)After a towering kick that hung up forever, the ball would eventually be downed by Greendale on the Rocket's 3. The defense would hold them to just 5-yards so they were forced to punt from their own end zone.

On the snap of the ball, the Panthers would come hard and got a little to close as they collided into the punter bringing out the yellow hankies. This would be enough for a 1st down so the Rocket's drive would continue with a new set of downs.

The Panther defense lead by one of the better linebackers in the area in Drake Barczak saw to it that the they would not let the Rockets get a first down. That would become reality as they would have to bring out their punting unit once again going 3 and out.

After the return, Greendale found themselves starting from midfield. Seven plays later, Greendale would reach the end zone again as Brick would sneak it in behind big Matt Pulizos from 1-yard out. Nethery's kick was true and Greendale now increased their lead by a score of 14-0 with 8:20 now left in the 2nd quarter.

Again the Panther's specialty teams slipped up as they would let the return man loose up the middle of the field. Gaelan Seibold would eventually catch him from behind on the Greendale 8-yard line.

The Panther's defense would now be put to the test as their backs were against the wall. Well they passed the test with flying colors as they forced the Rockets to turn the ball over on downs on Greendale's 15-yard line.

The cats seemed to be moving the ball once again but 5-plays later, Brick would throw an interception on the Rocket's 44.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)Greendale's stingy defenders would take to the field once again. This time they would let South Milwaukee get off 6-plays before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 30. This was the second time where South Milwaukee got deep into Panther territory but couldn't score.

With 1:10 left in the half, Greendale would take over. Three plays later, Brick would throw another interception on the Rocket's 28. The Rockets would run 1-play before the 1st half would finally come to an end.

The Panthers would be kicking to start the 2nd half. After a modest return, South Milwaukee would begin from their 30. Four plays later, Greendale would suffer a close call as one of the Rocket running backs got free and looked like he was going to easily score. Panther safety Kennedy Ringelberg who is one of the faster players on the team would track down the running back and then smartly punch the ball loose at the 2-yard line. The ball would roll into and then out of the end zone so by rule, it should be a touchback and Greendale's ball. The referees who were out of position ruled it a touchdown and it appeared that the Rockets would now be on the board. The close call part comes in the form of a penalty flag that was throw on the Rockets way back near the original line of scrimmage. That would nullify the touchdown so instead of kicking the extra point, the Rockets would have to bring their offense back out and continue their drive from their 40.

South Milwaukee would continue this drive for fourteen more plays before turning the ball over on downs on Greendale's 18. Here again, the Panthers would show them the door, but they wouldn't let them in.

Greendale's offense would finally step on the field for the first time in the half. They could only sting 4-plays together before they were forced to punt once again.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)With not much rest, the cat's defense would have to suck it up and go back to work as the Rocket's would set up on their 34. Thirteen plays and a lot of time later, South Milwaukee would reach the end zone on an inside counter play from 17-yards out. The extra point kick was good and the score was now 14-7 in favor of Greendale with 8:09 now left in the game.

After the ensuing kickoff, Greendale would begin from their 31. At this point in the half, Greendale only has run 4-plays in 16:00 minutes of play. They would put 9 more plays together before turning the ball over on downs on South Milwaukee's 30-yard line.

The defense who now had a little time to rest would take to the field. It was apparent that they still had plenty of reserves in the tank as they started making plays-forcing the Rockets to turn the ball over on downs on the Rocket 31.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Varsity)There was now only 2:48 left in the game and Greendale needed to score or at the very least, use up the rest of the clock. Without taking any chances, they would keep it on the ground-pounding out 7-plays before the game finally came to an end.

Greendale would win this defensive battle by a score of 14-7. The offense seemed to have started out the game on track in the 1st half, but then derailed in the 2nd half. The defense, however, stepped up to the plate making the Rockets work for every inch they got.

The Panthers (4-1) will now travel to Greenfield (3-2) to play the Hustling Hawks. The Hawks who are surprising people this year defeated a tough Whitnall team last week by a score of 39-34. This will be another tough test for the Panthers for they know that Greenfield always brings their A game. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

Power Has Been Restored!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/15/11

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)I just wanted to inform all of you Greendale football fans out there that the power has been finally restored to the freshmen football team Thursday night in Greendale. After several weeks of playing in the dark, the Panthers came out fast and furious, and maybe even a little ravenous, as they took it to the visiting South Milwaukee Rockets with a score of 40-21. Greendale took advantage of numerous Rocket turnovers and kept making big plays all night both on offense and defense. When watching the team play, it seemed like everyone played with confidents and control. Sure... there will always be a few areas that needed work but all-in-all, the mental mistakes were kept to a minimum. I think what the coaches look for is improvement from week to week. Yesterday showed that there was a lot of improvements! Passes were on target, catches were caught, kicks were true, and big plays were made. The Panthers record now moves to 2-2 for the year, as they will ready themselves for a visit to Greenfield next week.

It was another beautiful late summer evening for football. The sun was out with a slight breeze that wasn't strong enough to affect anything. South Milwaukee would end up kicking first to start the game. After a weak kick, the Panthers would start from their 48. Ten plays later Panther quarterback David Wood would complete an 8-yard pass to Zach Schultz in the right side of the end zone capping off a 10-play 52-yard scoring drive. Panther kicker John Fauser would bang it through the uprights giving Greendale the early lead by a score of 7-0 with 5:54 left in the 1st quarter.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)After the ensuing kick, South Milwaukee would begin on offense from their 28-yard line. They would hook up 10-plays before the world would be turned upside down. The center ended up snapping the ball over the quarterback's head so he was attempting to recover the ball. The only problem was that he was out number by a bunch of hungry Panthers. With bodies flying all over the place, Greendale's Jake Feinas would scoop it up and race 70-yards the other way for a Panther touchdown. Greendale would try for the 2-point conversion and failed making the score 13-0 with 1:29 left in the 1st quarter.

The Rockets would again go on offense-starting from their 23. On the very first play, the fullback would fumble of which Greendale would recover and just like that, the Panthers were looking at a short field as they took over 1st and 10 from the Rocket's 20.

Like a hungry beast staring at a steak, the Panthers would pounce as Wood would throw a pass to Fauser in the end zone as he would have to jump high and make a beautiful fingertip catch. Fauser would convert the point after try and Greendale was all over South Milwaukee by a score of 20-0 and 1:08 still left in the 1st quarter.

The Rockets would set up the offense on their 37 following the ensuing kick. They would run 4-plays before fumbling again, but this time they would recover it. That was 3rd down, however, so they would have to punt the ball away.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)After a huge 42-yard kick return by Brad Lachman, Greendale would take over on the Rocket's 29. Five plays later, Wood would sneak it in from 2-yards out for Greendale's 4th touchdown of the game. Fauser would split the uprights again making the score 27-0 with 6:04 now left in the 1st half.

South Milwaukee's specialty teams would get a nice return on the ensuing kick-giving their offense the ball on the Cat's 45. Two plays later, they would score on a 6-yard quarterback keeper up the middle for their first points of the evening. On the extra point try, the ball just cleared the crossbar by inches making the score 27-7 with 5:23 left in the half.

On the ensuing kick, the Rockets would execute the perfect onside kick-catching Greendale somewhat off guard. They would recover it of Greendale's 46. The Panther defense was starting to flex their muscle as they forced the Rockets into a 4th and 12 situation from Greendale's 47. In somewhat of a surprising move, they would go for it only to end up being sacked for a 10-yard loss so Greendale was now in control of the ball from South Milwaukee's 44.

Three plays later, Wood would throw another pass in the direction of teammate Josh Michaels who made a great catch completing a 25-yard scoring strike. The hold was botched on the extra point try making the score 33-7 with 2:26 left in the 1st half.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)The Rockets would begin their next drive on their 34. They would string 8-plays together before the 1st half clock finally run out.

Fauser would be kicking first for Greendale to start the 2nd half. After another nice return, South Milwaukee would begin from their 46. The Rockets must have been playing with a slimy ball as they fumbled again of which Greendale's Chris Phillips would recover on the Panther's 46.

Three plays later, Wood hooked up with Fauser for another monster pass and just like that, Greendale was knocking on the Rocket's hatch from their 15. Three plays later, Wood connected with Michaels on a 10-yard slant pass for another Panther score. The point after try was good as Greendale now extended their lead with a score of 40-7 and 7:57 left in the 3rd quarter.

South Milwaukee would begin their next drive from their 35. Eight plays later, Greendale's defense would come up big again as Schultz would intercept the ball on his 45.

This time the Panthers would be looking at a 4th and long and would have to punt for the first time in the game.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)After the return, the Rockets would take over from their 36. Thirteen plays later, they would cross the goal line with a 1-yard quarterback sneak. The extra point try was no good making the score 40-13 with 7:48 now left in the game.

The Rockets would again try another on-side kick but this time the Panthers were ready as they would cover the ball up on South Milwaukee's 48. The Panthers would stitch 6-plays together before turning the ball over on downs at the Rocket's 20-yard line.

Six plays later, South Milwaukee would throw the ball down field by a bunch of players from both teams. It kind of looked like watching the steel ball in a pin-ball game as it was being tipped around by at least 4 different players. What matters in a situation like that is who comes down with it last. It would be Greendale's Ron Weber so Greendale would take over 1st and 10 from their 32.

Three plays later, Greendale would fumble and South Milwaukee would recover on the Panther's 44.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)Two plays later, the Rockets would complete a 21-yard touchdown pass for their third TD of the night. They would go for 2 and get it making the score 40-21 in favor of Greendale with 2:10 left in the game.

The Rocket tried another on-side kick but Greendale would recover it at the midfield stripe. This time the Panthers turned the ball over on downs near midfield so South Milwaukee would take over with :32 seconds left in the game.

Knowing that they time was in short supply, the Rockets would attempt a long pass. That would abruptly come to an end as Phillips would get his second takeaway of the game for Greendale.

South Milwaukee at Greendale (Freshmen)All the Panthers had to do was take a knee and the game was over. The Panthers played like a complete football team as they would come out on top by a score of 40-21. They will now have to make the long drive all the way to Greenfield next Thursday as they will play the Greenfield Hawks. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30.

To Panic... Or Not To Panic... That Was The Question!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/12/11

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)The undefeated Greendale Panther varsity reserve football team headed out to South Milwaukee Monday to play the Rockets of South Milwaukee High School. If you suffer from anxiety or have panic attacks, it was probably a good idea that you weren't there at the start of the game because this one might have triggered the shakes and the sweats and maybe even some shortness of breath. But if you got to the game at the start of the second half, your physiological issues would have been spared because you would have witnessed what Greendale has been doing all season thus far. Making big plays on both offense and defense and dominating the game. After trailing 7-6 in the 1st half, Greendale came out in the 2nd half in an offensive frenzy scoring 22 unanswered points to defeat the Rockets 28-7 keeping their undefeated record of 5-0 intact for the 2011 season.

South Milwaukee would be kicking first to start the game. After a short return, the Panthers would start their first drive of the game from their 33. They would only move the ball 5-yards before being forced to punt-going 3 and out.

After a close call with a high snap over his head, Greendale's punter Heath Cone some how managed to get the ball and scrambled to get free and then kick the ball away. The Rockets would end up starting their first drive of the night from their 37. South Milwaukee looked to be playing straight ahead smash mouth football as they just kept running straight ahead. They would string 7-plays together before throwing a deep pass down field of which Greendale's Tyler Voss would intercept on his own 2-yard line. Greendale was in a hole but they kept the Rockets from scoring.

Again the Panthers would end up going 3 and out punting from deep in their own end of the field.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)The Rockets would have great field position as they ended up starting from Greendale's 33. It sure looked like they were going in until an untimely penalty backed up the Rockets. They ended up looking at a 4th and 3 on Greendale's 16. On the snap of the ball, the Panthers came with a huge push followed by a large swarm to stop the Rockets dead in their tracks. Greendale would take over 1st and 10 from their 17.

Two plays later, Greendale just like that, found themselves on the Rocket's 45. On the very next play, Panther running back Jake Zywicki would take a hand off from Josh Ringelberg and would scamper in from 45-yards out for the game's first score. Frankie Rutkowski's extra point try was blocked-making the score 6-0 with 8:30 now left in the 1st half.

With the wind at his back, Rutkowski would get off a huge kick forcing the South Milwaukee return man to back up. After falling to his knees with the ball, then dropping the ball and picking it up, the Panthers would meet him on the 10 with a rude awaking. It wasn't sure why the whistle didn't blow when the runner's knees hit the ground on the 2-yard line but hey, it was a full moon. It was here where the Rockets started their ground and pound stampede. The put a 15-play scoring drive together as they literally ran the Panthers over eventually scoring with a run from 4-yards out. The extra point attempt was good giving the Rockets the lead by a score of 7-6 with :38 seconds left in the 1st half. At this point in the game, Greendale only had one scoring drive on offense and the defense didn't look like they could stop anything.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)With a few ticks left on the clock, the Panthers would start from their 38. They would run a play and then quickly line up for one last play before the half would end. On the snap of, Ringelberg would quickly pump the ball towards Cody Kmetz and then he would let it fly on a sideline and go route to Kmetz, which was complete and he was off to the races. It looked like he might score with no time on the clock, but he was pushed out on a last ditch effort by a defender just 2-yards short of the goal line. The clock was used up so that was it for Greendale as they trailed 7-6 at halftime.

The Panthers would have to look for a spark on defense to start the 2nd half as they would be kicking first. After the return, South Milwaukee would start from their 22. Something must have sparked because for the first time in the game, Greendale stopped the Rockets dead in their tracks-forcing them to punt going 3 and out.

After a poor kick, Greendale would be looking at a short field starting on the Rocket's 32. On the second play, Zywick would rip off another big run taking the ball to the Rocket's 9. Even though he was breathing hard from the previous run, the coaches would give him the ball again and would score off left tackle. The Panthers would try for 2 since they missed their previous extra point try. On the snap of the ball, Ringelberg would keep it himself and cross the goal line and Greendale now regained the lead with a score of 14-7 and 8:06 left in the 3rd quarter.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)After the ensuing kick, the Rockets would take over on their 27. It looked like they would pick up right where they left off as they strung 10-plays together before eventually being forced to punt.

After the kick, Greendale would be starting from their 16. They only managed a few yards before having to punt back to the Rockets.

South Milwaukee would now take over on their 43. They would string 8-plays together and looked to be going in as Greendale was still having a little trouble stopping the stampede style of offense. Just like that, the Rockets would fumble of which Greendale would recover on their 11-yard line dodging a huge bullet.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)The mighty-mighty Panthers would now put a nine-play 89-yard scoring drive together as Ringelberg would pitch the ball to Zwicki on an option left play from 4-yards out. This was Greendale's third TD of the night. The Extra point try was good and Greendale was now on top 21-7 with 5:44 left in the game.

The Rockets would be starting from their 35 after the ensuing kick. The Panther defense seem to have woken up finally, as they forced a 4th and 4 for the Rockets. Being behind and running out of time, they would go for it from their 41. One the snap of the ball, the Panther defense came like a tsunami and stopped the Rockets at the line of scrimmage and would take over 1st and 10 from South Milwaukee's 41.

Greendale at South Milwaukee (Varsity Reserve)Seven plays later, Panther running back Jake Hagmayer would score from 2-yards out. The point after try was good and Greendale increased their lead to a score of 28-7 and 1:36 left in the game.

Following another nice kick, the Rockets would have to start from their 21. They would run four running plays and didn't bother to call time outs to end the game.

After a sleepy first half, the Panthers must have gotten a wake up call from the front desk at half time and basically dominated the 2nd half.

They will now head home next week as they will host the Greenfield Hawks. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30.

"Resilient!"
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/9/11

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)That's the word that head Panther coach Rob Stoltz uses to describe his team. "Things sometimes don't go the way you want them," Stoltz says. "But you gotta love how the guys never seem to panic or give up. That's the sign of a confident and mature football team."

Whenever Eisenhower and Greendale get together for a football game, you can pretty much expect that it will be a good one. Last Friday night's game was no exception. The game was full of weird formations, strange plays, helmets flying off, big plays, and when it was all over; Greendale would wind up on top by a score of 27-25. Both teams looked to have trouble stopping each other as they went back and fourth all night. What ultimately determined the outcome had to be turnovers and the missed opportunities. Needless to say, I'm sure all of the fans that were lucky enough to have a seat at the game where entertained throughout the evening.

Eisenhower would kick first to start the game. After a short little return, Greendale would begin their first drive of the game from their 31. They would run 9-plays before calling on senior Brett Nethery to punt the ball away from Ike's 35. His corner kick just was a tad far and end ended up in the end zone giving Eisenhower the ball on their 20.

The Lions who were playing a shotgun version of the Wing-T would put 8-plays together before fumbling the ball near midfield of which Greendale's Drake Barczak would recover. Greendale would take over from their 45.

The Panthers failed to get the yardage needed for a first down so they would have to punt going 3 and out.

This time Nethery would pin Ike deep-forcing them to start from their 13. Two plays later, Greendale's Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski would intercept an Eisenhower pass and return it all the way to Ike's 12.

Two plays later, Greendale would cross the goal line as quarterback Sam Brick would scamper around to his left and run it in from 7-yards out. Nethery would convert the point after try-making the score 7-0 Panthers, with :59 seconds left in the opening quarter.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)On the following kick, things got interesting as Eisenhower would break free up the sideline for a huge return. There was a penalty way back so the Lions would end up having to start from their 11 instead. Here they looked to be moving up the field but were eventually forced to punt from their 45.

The Lions would line up in a regular punt formation but would then split into a special spread alignment of which there were 3 receivers bunched up to the right and all of the linemen lined up to the left-leaving the center all by himself. The center would then snap the ball to the short man who would then throw a pass to his right to one of the receivers. The other two players would then block for him and they would gain 15-yards, which was plenty for their 1st down.

Nine plays later, the Lions would cross the goal line from 3-yards out for their first score of the game. The extra point try would fail, as the ball would hit the left upright making the score 7-6 in favor of the Panthers with 5:43 left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale would start their next drive from their 25. Eight plays later, Brick would roll to his left and looked to be in trouble. Somehow he managed to get a pass off right in the hands of Peter Pekar who slashed across the field and scored-completing a 34-yard scoring play. The point after try was true adding to the Panthers total with a score of 14-6 and 2:38 left in the 1st half.

Ike would now try to answer back as they would start from their 29 after the ensuing kick. Instead of staying with their ground game, they decided to go to the air. They failed miserably as all 3 passes were incomplete-forcing them to punt from their 29.

After a poor kick, Greendale would take over near midfield. Three plays later, Brick would be blindsided while attempting to throw down field and would cough the ball up of which Ike would recover on Greendale's 44.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)With 1:22 left, Ike would see if they could tie this game up before the half would end. Four plays later, they would reach the end zone with a 4-yard slat pass. They would go for 2 and the tie but they were stopped short making the score 14-12 in favor of Greendale with :26 seconds left in the 1st half.

The Panthers would get the ball back after the kick and just take a knee to end the 1st half of play.

Greendale would have to kick to start the 2nd half. It was here that the specialty teams who were having an awesome year thus far stumbled and let the return man for Ike loose and up the field. Nethery who was the kicker was all that was left between the ball carrier and the end zone. Backing up like a hockey goalie, he would manage to get a piece of the runner enough to slow him up so that help could catch up and make the tackle. New Berlin now had the ball on Greendale's 42.

Eight plays later, Ike would score on an 8-yard touchdown pass at the right side of the end zone. Again they would try for 2 and fail, but now they had the lead with a score of 18-14 and 8:13 left in the 3rd quarter.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)Eisenhower would then try a pooch kick for some reason, which backfired as one of the up men for Greendale would snag the ball on a fly and get a little return up to the 37-yard line. Twelve plays later, Brick would be attempting to pass but couldn't find anyone open so he was forced to run. After a little bit of scrambling, he would eventually get tackled for a huge lose forcing the Panthers to have to punt the ball away. The kick would make the end zone so Ike would be starting from their 20.

On the Lion's third play, they would commit another turnover as they ended up fumbling the ball of which Pekar would recover for the Panthers on Ike's 44.

Seven plays later, Greendale would reach the money zone again as Brick would take it himself from 5-yards out. This time Nethery would just miss to the left with his kick but Greendale would regain the lead by a score of 20-18 and 1:12 left in the 3rd.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)New Berlin would attempt to get the lead back as they would have to start from their 21. Four plays later, they found themselves having to punt as they were looking at a 4th and 10.

Greendale's Kennedy Ringelberg would get a nice little return up to the Lion's 47 where they would now go on offense. On the second play in the drive, Panther running back Mike Scheidt would finally shake loose and ran like a deer all the way to the end zone completing a 40-yard jaunt. The extra point was good and Greendale now had a little breathing room as they led by a score of 27-18 with 10:53 now left in the game.

Ike would begin their next drive from their 18. Five plays later, they would stun the Panthers as they hooked up on a monster 71-yard pass completion for a touchdown. This time they would kick the extra point and Ike now found themselves just 2 points behind Greendale with a score of 27-25 and 8:20 left in the game.

Greendale would assume control of the ball after the ensuing kick and would start from their 29. They would squeeze off 5-plays before being forced to punt from Ike's 44.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Varsity)Nethery would pin them deep again as Eisenhower would have to start from their 15. Six plays later, Greendale's Drake Barczak would come up big sacking the quarterback for a major loss. The Lions were now looking at a 4th and 20.

New Berlin's game plan from the get-go looked to be that of keeping the ball out of Greendale's hands as much as possible by sustaining long ball control drives. Even though they had a long way to go, they were going to have to try and make some kind of play. Originally, they were going to go for it with their normal offensive set, but then they called time out. When they came back on the field, they came with their punting unit instead. Just like earlier in the game, they would split from that set so the Panthers knew something was up. On the snap of the ball, the up man would get the ball and throw to his left to one on the receivers by the side line. This receiver would then attempt to throw another pass down field, but Garcia-Bankowski was not fooled for Greendale, as he would smartly bat the ball down knowing that they would get the ball way up at Ike's 26.

The Panther offense would now take to the field and would have one mission. They wanted to chew up as much clock as they could and to not turn the ball over. They would run 6-plays before they ended up turning the ball over on downs on Eisenhower's 7. When the Panther coaches looked at the clock, there was still :05 seconds left, which meant that Ike would have one more play.

On the snap of the ball, the Eisenhower quarterback was running around in his end zone and then unleashed his pass. The ball would fall incomplete and the game was over.

Greendale would win this time as they defeated the Lions by a score of 27-25. This by far was one of the better games to watch if you are a high school football fan. It had everything you could imagine. These two teams have a storied history and will always bring their "A" games.

The Panthers will now host the South Milwaukee Rockets next week. The Rockets were stunned last week as they lost on the road to an up and coming Greenfield team by a score of 24-7. That was the Rockets first loss of the season so I'm pretty sure that they will not want to let that happen again. In other words, you can expect another game just like the one that happened.

Freshmen

A lightening Strike Followed By A Gentle Rain
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/8/11

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)After a week off, the Greendale Panther's freshmen football team returned to work Thursday as they were hosting the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions. It was another perfect night for football as this game would serve as an opening act to another football game that would start right after, which would be none other, then our beloved Packers. In fact, the game was moved up a half hour just because of that game. Not a bad move if I do say so myself!

Unfortunately, things didn't end up the way the Panthers were hoping for as they would fall victim to a much bigger Eisenhower team 27-6. It was pretty much the same story as the last game with Greendale unable to sustain any kind of drives long enough to find the end zone. In this particular game, the defense had a little trouble handling Ike's big fullback who was a load to bring down.

Greendale, would receive first to begin the game. After a nice return by Brady Kais, the Panthers would start from their 39. On the very first play, Greendale would go up top into the wind as Panther quarterback David Wood would connect with Josh Michaels for a huge 67-yard scoring strike. The extra point kick was blocked so Greendale would draw first blood with a score of 6-0 and 9:41 left in the 1st quarter.

Ike would start their first drive of the night on their 23 after the ensuing kickoff. They would put 7-plays together before being forced to punt from their 36.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)After the return, Greendale would find themselves starting from their 40-yard line. The Panthers at this point seemed to have no trouble moving the ball because 4-plays later; they were knocking on Eisenhower's door at the 9-yard line. It was looking like the Panthers were going to jump all over the Lions but on the very next play; Wood would be intercepted in the end zone. The Eisenhower defender would return the ball all the way to midfield but there was a block in the back so Ike would take over 1st and 10 from their 39.

This time the Lions would keep it going for 8-plays later, they would score through the air from 16-yards out for their first score on the game. On the point after attempt, Greendale would jump off sides so Ike decided to bring the offense out instead of kicking. That didn't work for Greendale stuffed them in the backfield so the score would be tie 6 to 6 with 2:46 left in the opening quarter.

After the kick Greendale would end up starting from their 20. They would run off 5-plays before being forced to put from their 40-yard line.

Ike now had the ball on their 38. They would run one play before the 1st quarter would come to an end. A few plays later, Ike would score as the quarterback would hand the ball off to his big fullback who would then rumble into the end zone from 21-yards out capping off a 6-play 62-yard scoring drive. The point after try was good making the score 13-6 with 8:04 left in the 1st half.

The Panthers would now try to answer back as they would begin from their 24. This time the black cats couldn't get the necessary yardage to move the sticks so they would have to punt from their 27.

The Lions would take control from their 45 after the kick. Three plays later, Panther defensive back Brad Lachman would intercept the ball giving it back to his offense on the Panther 25.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)Greendale's offense could only string 5-plays together before being forced to punt the ball away.

The Lions would start this drive from their 33. They would only get off 6-plays before the clock finally ran out-ending the first half.

Greendale would kick first to start the 2nd half. Things looked like they were going to go Greendale's way for the Eisenhower return man was having a problem getting a grip on the ball, but then the worm would turn as he would eventually secure it and then run all the way to the Panther's 16-yard line, which would be where they would start their first drive of the 2nd half. Three plays later, Ike's quarterback would be rolling to his right and then find a back side slant wide open in the end zone for another Eisenhower touchdown. The point after try was good and the Lions now were on top 20-6 with 8:12 left in the 3rd quarter.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would take over on their 30. They would only manage to gain a yard so they would have to punt going 3 and out.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)The Panthers would catch a huge break as the Lion's return man would fumble the ball on the play of which Greendale would recover on the Eisenhower 41. Apparently that wasn't meant to be for on the very next play, there would be a mix-up in the backfield for Greendale and they would fumble the ball giving it right back to the Lions on their 45.

Seven plays later, Ike would cross the goal line on a screen pass from 23-yards out. The point after try was good and now Ike was on top 27-6 with 2:20 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Panther's would end up starting their next drive from deep in a hole on their 12. They were doing an excellent job of moving down the field, but then they started going the wrong way as a result of a few quarterback sacks. They would eventually be looking at a 4th and 30 and were forced to punt from their own 26.

New Berlin would now have the ball on Greendale's 48. They would end up having to punt going 3 and out. This time the Panther's front line managed to get close enough to block the punt. As a result, they would take over right there 1st and 10.

The Panthers looked to be on their way again. They managed to get to the Lion's 8 and were looking at a 4 and goal. After a time out, they would run a slant pass over the middle, which was wide open but the Panther receiver could not hold onto the ball so Greendale had to give it up on downs just 8-yards from pay dirt.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale (Freshmen)The Lions now looked to have their #2 offense in the game. They would only manage to get it to their 14 before being forced to punt the ball away.

Greendale would have great field position on Ike's 27-yard line after the return. They would squeeze off 3-plays before throwing an interception back to the Lions.

Ike would take over on their 26 with 1:00 left in the game and Greendale having no time outs left. All Ike needed to do was kneel down 3 times and the game would end.

Greendale would come up short losing to the Lions 27-6. They will play next week at home against the South Milwaukee Rockets. This game is scheduled to start back at the normal time of 5:30pm.

Varsity Reserve

Checkmate!

Coach Ringelberg makes a move that lead his Panthers to victory over Eisenhower.
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/6/11

Greendale at New Berlin Eisenhower (Varsity Reserve)It's only the 4th week in the varsity reserve season and I found myself standing on the sidelines in a sweatshirt and sweatpants already. This was a far cry from sweating at the last game I watched them play. Greendale didn't play last week because St Thomas More couldn't field a team so the big question everyone was asking themselves was, how was this going to affect their play? I'm here to report that this had no affect whatsoever! In fact, they looked better then the last time I watch them as they defeated the New Berlin Eisenhower Lions on the road 21-14 in what was a very interesting chess match. Sure the score was close but if you were at the game watching it, you had this sense that Greendale was in total control from the get go. Defensively they were aggressive and won the battle up front, and offensively they out executed the Lions with their passing attack. New Berlin didn't help their cause as they compiled close to 100 yards in penalties and had several turnovers. Greendale would have had one more take-away on a punt play when they covered up a loose ball after an Eisenhower return man fumbled it on the catch, but for some reason while the ball was in the air after the kick mind you, a ref blew the whistle so by rule; the play has to be re-played from the previous spot. I gotta tell you, I've never seen that before in over 35 years of watching high school football.

It was a beautiful nigh for a game. The sun was still out and the football field was in prefect shape. Greendale would be receiving first to start the game. After the kick return, Josh Ringelberg would lead the offense out onto the field and line them up on their 23-yard line. They would run 3-plays before having to punt the ball. It was here were the rouge whistle incident occurred so they actually had to punt twice.

This time the return man held onto the ball and there was now phantom whistle so Ike would start their first drive on the night on their 37. The Panthers backed them up a bit and eventually forced them to punt going 3 and out.

Greendale at New Berlin Eisenhower (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would begin this drive from their 45. They would run 7-plays before looking at a 4th and 5 from Ike's 25. It was here where a cool and calm Ringelberg would roll to his right and find Doug St. Onge down field for a 10-yard gain, which was enough to keep the drive alive. Six plays later, Greendale would cross the line that pays as running back Jake Zywicki would power his way from 1-yard out for a score. St Onge, who does the kicking for Greendale, made the extra point try and with 1:35 left in the 1st quarter, Greendale found themselves on top by a score of 7-0 after capping off a 14-play 55-yard drive.

After the ensuing kick, the Lions would begin from their 41. They ran 3-plays gaining just 1-yard before they were forced to punt for the second time in the game.

It was now the start of the 2nd quarter as Greendale would take over on their 39. Eight plays later, they would turn the ball over on downs at Eisenhower's 43.

It took the Lions 10-plays to finally reach the end zone as they scored on a 6-yard pass play. The point after try was good tying the game at sevens with 2:50 remaining in the 1st half.

Greendale at New Berlin Eisenhower (Varsity Reserve)On the ensuing kick, St. Onge looked to be on his way but was tackled from behind on Eisenhower's 46 and that was after running 45-yards down the field. The offense would not partake in any success as was forced to punt going 3 and out.

The Lions would find themselves starting from their 14 following the kick. They would run 5-plays before the 1st half would come to an end.

Greendale would be kicking to Ike to open the 2nd half. Behind the strong leg of St Onge, Eisenhower would have to start from their 11-yard line. On the Lions third play, they would connect with a slant pass but the receiver then was clocked hard enough to jar the ball loose of which Greendale Liam Duffy would recover. Greendale now had the ball 1ts and 10 on Ike's 32.

Greendale at New Berlin Eisenhower (Varsity Reserve)On the very first play, Ringelberg would connect with St Onge down field for a 27-yard pass completion and just like that, the Panthers were on the door step looking at a 1st and goal from the 5. On the next play, Ringelberg dropped back for a pass and soon found a set on purple covered arms around him but somehow he would shake loose and then weave and bob his way into the end zone for Greendale's second touchdown of the game. The point after try was good and Greendale now regained the lead 14-7 with 8:06 left in the 3rd quarter.

Greendale pinned Ike deep on the kick again forcing them to start from their 13. The Panther's defense would hold forcing the Loins to punt going 3 and out.

After a poor kick, Greendale would now take over on Eisenhower's 26. On their 3-play, Ringelberg would be running on a quarterback keeper to his left when he was hit hard and fumbled the ball. Eisenhower would now take over on their 15-yard line.

Again the black cats would force the Lions to punt from their 22 after 3 plays.

Greendale would begin this drive from Eisenhower's 47. On the very first play, Greendale would throw the ball deep but Ringelberg's pass was slightly under thrown and was picked off by the Lions on their 21-yard line.

The Lions could not get the necessary yardage for a first down so they were forced to punt right back to the Panthers.

Greendale would begin this drive from their own 19. They would run 2-plays before the 3rd quarter would come to an end. It was here where head Panther coach Keith Ringelberg would make his move. Based on seeing how the Lions were defending them, he had two of his receivers split out way wider then normal on the wide side of the field. By doing that, he would make it almost impossible for the Eisenhower safety to get over there for support on any deep pass unless he would adjust and move over. When Ringelberg started barking out the signals, the safety never moved so this meant that one of the two wide outs should be open. On the snap of the ball, it would be St Onge screaming down the seam with no one near him so Ringelberg threw the perfect pass to complete a 68-yard scoring strike-capping off a 3-play 81-yard scoring drive. The extra point kick was good and Greendale now lead 21-7 with 9:48 left in the game.

After the ensuing kick, Eisenhower would take over 1st and 10 from their 35. They would finally start completing some passes and soon found themselves on Greendale's 7-yard line after 6-plays. On the seventh play, they would score with a 7-yards pass into the end zone. The point after try was good making the score 21-14 in favor of Greendale with 7:28 left in the game.

Greendale at New Berlin Eisenhower (Varsity Reserve)After the return and a major face masking penalty, Greendale would begin from Eisenhower's 45. The Panthers looked to be moving down field and taking a lot of clock with them when on their eight play of the drive, Ringelberg's pass would be tipped and then fell right in the hands of an Eisenhower player so the Lions would get the ball back on their 15 with 3:44 left in the game.

The Lions look to be on their way for a possible game tying march, but on Ike's sixth play, Greendale's Sam Bauer would come up huge-intercepting the ball on Greendale's 28 with 2:08 left in the game. All Greendale needed to do was drag their feet and get one 1st down to end this game.

The Panthers were running safe plays forcing the Lions to burn all of their time outs. All that was needed for Greendale was a 1st down and the game would be over. Well, that didn't happen and Greendale was forced to punt from their 22 with 1:20 left on the clock. On the first punt, Eisenhower was coming hard to try and block the punt but they would run into the kicker after the ball was gone bring out the yellow flags. Even though, the Greendale coaches knew that Ike was trying to block the kick, they would elect to take the 5-yard penalty, which wasn't enough for the first down and kick again knowing very well that they had an opportunity to take more time off the clock. On the next punt, the exact same thing occurred. Eisenhower would get somewhat close to blocking the ball, but they would have trouble avoiding St Onge who was doing the kicking. Greendale again took the 5-yard penalty and was able to erase more time off the clock. On the third try, they would miss the punter and catch the ball on their 45 with :54 left in the game.

Greendale at New Berlin Eisenhower (Varsity Reserve)With no time outs left, New Berlin had no choice but to throw the ball. You have to keep in mind that when you pass the pall, 3 things can happen and 2 of them are bad. Well on the first pass attempt the not-so bad thing happen as the ball would fall incomplete. On the next play, however, the worst of the bad things would happen as the ball was throw deep and tipped by a Eisenhower player and then fell right in the hands of Greendale's Alex Roloff for a Greendale Panther interception. All Ringelberg needed to do was take two knees and the game was over.

Greendale would defeat the Lions 21-14. This would move their record to 4-0 for the year. They will be on the road next week as they will play the South Milwaukee Rockets on Monday the 12th of September. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30pm.

Panthers Take No Prisoners!
R. A. Mattrisch - 9/3/11

Greendale at St Thomas More (Varsity)Wouldn't you know it? It hasn't rained in a month, it's a holiday weekend with a rare Saturday afternoon game, and it has to rain. Of course we needed the rain but why couldn't it wait until night-time? Needless to say, the game was delayed about an hour and a half as lightening and thunder passed through the area. The officials are the ones that make the call on and they are the ones directly responsible for the safety of the players on the field. Their guidelines are such that a half hour must go by without seeing any lightening before the game will be allowed to happen. It's not the rain that is the issue, but the lightening instead. You can always play football in the rain. The players don't care... The coaches don't care... And of course the fans don't care... NOT!... At any rate, the game did happen even with the light showers throughout the afternoon.

Greendale at St Thomas More (Varsity)You have to wonder if St Thomas More thought that there was still a tornado going on because they were totally blown off the field by a much larger Greendale team, as the Cavilers ended up on the wrong end of a lopsided scoreboard-losing to the Panthers 48-0. The size difference was just too much for St Thomas More to overcome as Greendale could pretty much do whatever they wanted in the game. This was Greendale's second shutout victory in a row, which is not always easy to do. All I know is that the Panthers are now firing on all cylinders, as Panther quarterback Sam Brick seems to have got his mojo back and the defense is getting stronger and stronger each week-taking no prisoners whatsoever. I think the rest of the Woodland Conference maybe in trouble!

Greendale would kick first to start the game. After a short return by St. Thomas More, they would start their first drive of the game from their 19-yard line. The Panther defense was all over them like a dirty shirt forcing More to punt going 3 and out.

Following the punt and return, Greendale's quarterback Sam Brick would line his offense up on their 45. They would run 3-plays before Brick would loose the slippery wet ball while attempting to throw a pass down field. More would recover the loose ball on their 37.

Again More could not get the first down so they would have to punt from their 25.

Greendale at St. Thomas More (Varsity)With a misty light rain still falling, Greendale would take over from their 46. Behind strong running performances by Mike Scheidt and Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski, Greendale would power their way into the end zone, as Scheidt would score from 11-yards out. Senior Brett Nethery would make the point after try-making the score 7-0 with 5:40 left in the 1st quarter of play.

St. Thomas More would attempt to get something going from their 23 following the kick and return. On the very first play, Panther middle linebacker Drake Barczak would breech the offensive front of More and collide with the running back hard enough to force the ball loose of which he would recover himself.

Greendale would now take control as the ball rested on More's 22. On the very first play, Brick would make a play-action fake and throw a pass to his tight end Kennedy Ringelberg who was wide open over the middle for a 22-yard scoring strike. Nethery would make the kick-making the score 14-0 with 5:16 left in the opening quarter of play.

The Cavilers would start their next drive from their 10 following the ensuing kick. They just could not do anything against the overpowering Panthers defense and were forced to punt from their own end zone.

Greendale was looking at another short field, as they would line up on More's 27. Four plays later, Brick would find Nethery in the end zone on a slant route for another Panther score. This time, the holder mishandled the wet ball so the kick would never get off the ground. Greendale now found themselves leading 20-0 with 1:23 still left in the 1st quarter.

Greendale at St. Thomas More (Varsity)The Cavilers would begin this drive from their 20. They were still looking for their first 1st down of the game. That wouldn't happen here either as they were forced to line up for their fourth punt of the game, which was now in the 2nd quarter.

Following a poor kick, Greendale would take over on More's 42. It looked like the Panthers were in the end zone again, but it was called back on a penalty. They eventually turned the ball over on downs at the Caviler's 15-yard line.

St. Thomas More found themselves punting again as they went 3 and out.

Greendale again was looking at a short field as they would begin from More's 22. Two plays later, Brick would find Ringelberg running a skinny post over the middle for a nice 17-yard scoring strike. The point after try was good as Greendale now looked to be blowing this game wide open with a score of 27-0 and 6:50 left in the 1st half of play.

More would start their next drive from their 20 as Nethery would make the end zone with his kick. They still could not get on track and would have to punt going 3 and out.

Following a nice return by Ringelberg, which was called way back by a penalty, Greendale would end up starting from their 27. Nine plays later, the Panthers would cross the goal line again as Garcia-Bankowski would run over a defender from 3-yards out for a touchdown. The point after try was good-making the score 34-0 with 2:16 still left in the 1st half.

Greendale at St. Thomas More (Varsity)Greendale's specialty teams, which are in a league of their own would cover the kick forcing More to start deep in a hole on their 13. Three plays later, disaster would strike, as they would fumble of which Zack Henderson would recover for Greendale.

With the ball sitting just 15-yards away from More's goal line, Greendale would take over. Two plays later, Brick would throw a dart to Ringelberg who was running a sideline route in the end zone. Nethery would convert the kick as Greendale piled on more points as the score now read 41-0 with 1:13 left in the half.

More, who was still looking for a 1st down would begin from their 23. With no luck at all and nothing to lose, they would go for it on 4th down. It was here where they would throw a pass down the left side line but sophomore Mitchell Brees, would make a spectacular one handed interception right in front of the Panther bench for Greendale.

With just :39 seconds left in the half, Greendale would rattle of 5-plays before the clock would finally run out.

The pesky drizzle seemed to have subsided to start the 2nd half. For the 2nd week in a row, Greendale would end up initializing the 35-point rule, which means the clock would only stop by a time out or an injury. What made matters worse, the Cavilers had to kick to the Panthers to open the 2nd half.

On the return, Scheidt looked to be on his way for a touchdown return, but the official saw that he stepped on the side line so the Panthers would have to settle for starting on More's 30 instead. Panther head coach Rob Stoltz would now call on freshmen quarterback Josh Ringelberg to drive the # 2 offense. They would run 4-plays before turning the ball over on downs on More's 32.

Greendale at St. Thomas More (Varsity)On the Caviler's first play, they would finally get their first 1st down of the game as they were now facing the #2 defense for the Panthers. They didn't go much farther then that, as they turned the ball over on downs at the midfield stripe.

With the clock still continuously running, the Panthers would put a nice 13-play scoring drive together as Josh Ringelberg would sneak it in from 1-yard out. The extra point try was good and now Greendale found themselves on top by a score of 48-0 with 8:07 now left in the game.

More would begin from their 19 following the return. They looked to be putting their best drive of the game together taking it all the way to the other side of the field. On their eighth play though, they would throw an ill-advised pass of which Greendale's Liam Duffy would intercept at the Panther's 10-yard line.

Greendale would soon find themselves on More's side of the field behind a nice run from Jack Ringelberg who is Josh's twin brother. The Panthers would finally take a knee on the Caviler's 22 to end the game.

The final score would be Greendale 48, St Thomas More 0. This will most likely be the last time these teams will play each other for St Thomas More will be switching to a different conference next year through some WIAA realigning in the state. More is not a big school and is seemingly over matched by the other larger schools in the Woodland Conference.

Greendale will return home next week, as they will play host to arch rival New Berlin Eisenhower. The Lions are 2-1 and are coming off a loss last week against Pewaukee by a score of 9-6 at home. These two teams always put on a good show. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00pm.

R. A. Mattrisch - 9/2/11

Pasta Night! When it comes to food, there are many ethnic categories to choose from. All kidding aside, I think Italian is one of the favorites. You can't beat pizzas and pasta dishes. I actually think I could eat pasta every night! I know my son got through college eating pizza every night. Here at Greendale, a tradition was started by Head Coach Rob Stoltz. While playing sports in college, he picked up on the benefits of eating proper meals prior to athletic events.

One of the biggest boosters to a body's performance is carbohydrates. In fact you may have heard about how tri-athletes and marathon runners always load up on carbohydrates the night before so that their bodies have the necessary energy to last and perform in the particular event being held. That’s no different in football either. So what Coach Stoltz did was initiated a plan of which the mom's (usually senior moms) organize a huge Italian pasta style meal for the entire varsity football team to partake in the night before the game. Making a meal for a family of 5 is one thing but making a meal for a family of 55 is a whole different animal. The fact that we’re talking about huge football players makes it even more intimating.

Pasta Night!Well the Friday night before the St. Thomas More game, a few moms got together for their turn at hosting the pasta meal. Katie Barczak and Sandy Asmusen were the official hosts this time around. They would enlisted the help Kathy Henderson and Molly Scheidt to help because putting on a spaghetti dinner this size requires lots of extra help and hands. Needless to say, there were a lot of happy players and coaches at the end of the evening and all departed by saying thank you.

I would be remise if I didn't mention Matt Barczak and Wayne Henderson who helped with the clean up duty!

Executed!
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/26/11

Greendale at New Berlin West (Varsity)The title of this article could be interpreted two ways. It could be interpreted as what the Greendale Panthers did to the the New Berlin Vikings Friday night, which wouldn't be very proper, or it could be interpreted as what Greendale's offense finally did after a rough first game. Needless to say, that is what the title is referring too! Their offense finally got back on track as they would put up 49 unanswered points against the Vikings in what ended up to be a very one sided game. They executed in all areas of the game. Usually when a team does that, they will come out on top.

New Berlin had a great season last year making the playoffs, but graduation hit them hard leaving a bunch of young and inexperienced players behind. If you were to look at their game program, you would have noticed that they only had 8 seniors on the team. This will hurt them this year of course, but it won't hurt them next year and maybe the year after because they will return 52 out of the 60 players from this year's squad. Needless to say, things will be very different next year so watch out!

New Berlin would be kicking first to start the game. After the return, the Panthers would start from their 35. They would get off to a great start as quarterback Sam Brick would only need to hand the ball off 6 times in a row before running back Mike Scheidt would eventually finish the job from 8-yards out-capping off a 6-play 65-yard scoring drive. Panther kicker Brett Nethery would make the extra point kick making the score 7-0 with 9:42 left in the 1st quarter.

Nethery, who is proving to be a great asset to the specialty teams, would reach the end zone for a touchback-forcing West to start from their 20. It seemed as though Greendale's defense picked up right where they left off from last week as they forced the Vikings to punt-going 3 and out.

Greendale would begin their next drive from their 20. This time they would mix it up a bit with the run and the pass-executing their offense with precision and accuracy. On the 5th play, Brick would find one of his big receivers Kennedy Ringelberg in the right flat who then ran through 2 defenders all the way to pay dirt. That play would cover 37-yards for the score. Nethery would make his kick and Greendale now was up 14-0 with 5:11 left in the opening quarter of play.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Varsity)West would begin their next drive from their 15 following the kickoff. They finally looked to get things going-taking the ball all the way to the Panther's 8 before they would fumble the ball. This would abruptly end their first big drive of the game as Greendale's Sebastian Garcia-Bankowski would recover the ball for the Panthers.

Greendale looked to have another march going. Five plays later, however, Brick would throw his one and only interception of the game so West would take over on their 24.

The Panther's quick and rangy defense would again force the Vikings to punt going 3 and out.

After a poor punt, Greendale would end up starting from New Berlin's 32. Five plays later, Scheidt would take a hand off and scamper in from 8-yards out for Greendale's third touchdown of the game. The point after try was good and Greendale was now on top 21-0 with 8:34 left in the 1st half.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Varsity)West would be starting from their 20 again compliments of Nethery's thunder foot. They would get off 5-plays before having to line up for another punt. It was her that Greendale's specialty teams would come up huge as big Matt Pulizos would get to the punter and blocked the kick, which would eventually roll into the end zone. Greendale's Drake Barczak would smother the ball logging in another Panther touchdown. The point after try was good making the score 28-0 and 6:26 remaining in the 1st half.

Nethery would again reach the end zone. The Vikings offense could not resume their earlier success for they ended up punting-going 3 and out.

Greendale would begin their next drive from the 38 following the kick. On the very first play, Garcia-Bankowski would fumble-giving the ball right back to the Vikings on Greendale's 40-yard line.

Nothing would become of that turnover, however, as the Panther's swarming defense pushed West backwards forcing them to punt from their 44. The kick would reach the end zone so Greendale would being from their 20.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Varsity)After a nice catch by Panther receiver Gaelan Seibold, Greendale quickly found themselves on New Berlin's side of the field. A few plays later, Brick would find a wide-open Nethery in the right corner of the end zone-completing a 19-yard scoring strike that would cap off a 5-play 80-yard drive. The point after try was true again and Greendale was now up 35-0 with 1:17 left in the half.

After the ensuing kick, West would try to get something going from their 25 but the Panther hunters would have nothing to do with that as they pushed the Vikings backwards eventually forcing them to punt-going 3 and out. With :41 seconds left on the clock, Greendale would take over near midfield. On their 5th play, Brick would find Nethery running an out route and looked to have gone out of bounds to stop the clock. The officials didn't see it that way so Greendale had to quickly rush their field goal unit on the field to attempt a 19-yard field goal. The kick just missed to the right so the final score would remain 35-0 as time expired in the first half.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Varsity)Greendale would be kicking to start the 2nd half. Because of the 35-point rule, the clock would only stop on a time-out or for an injury. West would have to start from their 24. Two plays later, a heads up play by Ringelberg would give the Panthers the ball back as he would strip the Viking ball carrier of the ball and then would fall on it on West's 24-yard line.

Two plays later, Brick would make an amazing fake on a hand off and then sneak around the left side undetected to score from 12-yards. The kick was good and now the score was 42-0 with 8:47 left in the 3rd.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Varsity)The Vikings would start from their 20 after another monster kick. They would run 8-plays before having to punt from their 49.

Greendale would now line up with their #2 offense in the game. They would have two freshmen in the backfield. At quarterback was Josh Ringelberg, and at running back would be his twin brother Jack. The coaches felt that both of these players were very accomplished considering their age so they wanted to get them some playing time. They would squeeze off 3-plays before the 3rd quarter would come to an end.

Greendale would resume their drive now in the 4th quarter. All of a sudden, the Panthers found themselves on New Berlin's 9 after 2 nice runs by Jack and a face-masking penalty. Four plays later, Josh would sneak it in from 2-yards out for what would be Greendale's last touchdown of the night. This made the coaches very happy because not only did they just complete a 9-play 95-yard scoring drive, these guys would be around for another 3 years. Nethery would make the kick making the score 49-0 with 7:14 left in the game.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Varsity)The thunder foot would make the end zone so West would be starting from their 20. The 2nd team defense was now in to finish the game. Three plays later, disaster would strike New Berlin again as they would fumble of which Greendale's Mike Pietruszynski would recover on West's 20.

With the clock still running, Greendale would take over. They would run four vanilla plays to take time off the clock before turning it over on downs on West's 20-yard line with 2:00 left in the game. The Viking's goal at that point was to try and avoid another shut out for the second week in a row. Three plays later, they would come up 24-yards short of reaching that goal as the clock finally ran out.

Greendale would walk away a winner by defeating the New Berlin Vikings 49-0. The Panther will be on the road next week, as they will play the St. Thomas More Cavilers at St. Francis High School. This game will be played on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm because St Francis has a home game that Friday night.

A Little Rough Around The Edges
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/25/11

Greendale at New Berlin West (Freshmen)The Greendale Panther freshmen football team started their 2011 season Thursday night as they were on the road in New Berlin playing the New Berlin West Vikings. The results were not in their favor after the clock stopped ticking. Their defense put on a stellar performance, but the offense could not get off the ground. After a scoreless 1st half, the Vikings offense, which did not have a 1st down the first half somehow managed to put 7 points on the board, which was enough to defeat the Panthers by a score of 7-2. The biggest problem was that Greendale could not sustain any kind of drive during the course of the game. When they did look like they had something going, they would shoot themselves in the foot with either a turnover or a penalty. For those of you that were at the game, it looked like Greendale was the better team because New Berlin was having more issues on offense then Greendale was. Nonetheless, the final score is all that matters.

Greendale would kick to start the game. The Vikings would begin their first drive of the evening on their 39. They would fail to get a first down so they had to punt from their 47.

After the ensuing kick, Greendale would begin from their 23 with David Wood at the helm at quarterback. Four plays later, Panther running back Brady Kais would fumble of which New Berlin would recover on the Viking's 39-yard line.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Freshmen)West would run 2-plays before the center snapped the ball over the quarterback's head which forced the quarterback to scramble after it but not before losing 15-yards on the play. West would now be forced to punt from their 10-yard line.

With the ball resting on the Viking's 36, Greendale would begin their next drive looking at a short field. They would end up turning the ball over on downs, however, at New Berlin's 28.

On the very first play, the Viking center snapped the ball over the quarterback's head again netting a 10-yard loss. They would run two more plays before having to punt again from their 17.

Greendale would be looking at another short field as they would begin from West's 33. They would get off one plays before the 1st quarter would come to an end. With the 2nd quarter under way, Wood would complete a nice pass to Josh Michaels who would come down with it on New Berlin's 11-yard line. They would run a few more plays before looking at a 4th down and goal as the ball rested on the 6 so the Panthers where going to go with the field goal. Kicker John Fauser, who did a great job the other night for the varsity reserve game would do the kicking. After a perfect snap and hold, Fauser would just miss to the right so New Berlin would dodge the bullet and get the ball back on their 20.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Freshmen)The Vikings who have yet to get a first down this game would fail to do so again and would have to line up for another punt from their 28.

The Panthers would try to get something going this time from West's 49-yard line. Again they failed to get a first down so they would elect to punt from New Berlin's 33 in hopes of pinning the Vikings deep in their end of the field. The Vikings have yet to cross over into Panther territory thus far.

After the kick, and a nice little return, New Berlin would start from their 22. They would only manage 3-yards in three plays so the were forced to punt once again from their 25-yard line.

With 1:22 left in the first half, Greendale would take control on West's 43. They would attempt 3 pass plays of which all of them fell incomplete so they were forced to punt once again.

After the kick, New Berlin would take over on their 4-yard line. Instead of trying any kind of play, they would just take a knee with the intention of ending the first half.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Freshmen)The Panthers would be getting the ball first to start the second half. The kicker would chili-dip the the kick so it ended up going to one of the up-backs for Greendale. In attempting to secure the ball, he would get hit and ended up fumbling of which New Berlin would recover on Greendale's 35-yard line. This was the best field position for New Berlin thus far in the game.

On the Vikings first play, they would run an inside counter and get their first 1st down of the game. Two plays later, the Vikings would connect on a 20-yard pass play for the game's first score. The point after try was good and the Vikings found themselves on top 7-0 with 8:16 left in the 3rd quarter of play.

After the ensuing kick, the Panthers would begin from their 40. Three plays later they would be forced to punt as they were looking at a 4th and 7.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Freshmen)The Vikings would begin their next drive from their 16 following the kick. After the quarterback fumbled again, New Berlin was looking at a 4th and 16 so they would have to punt again too.

On the punt, Greendale would catch a break as the punter would mishandle the ball and Greendale jump all over him on West's 15. Two plays later, Kais would mishandle a pitch of which West would recover so the Vikings would take over 1st and 10 from their 10-yard line.

The Panther's defense would bring the pressure and get to the quarterback on the Viking's 2. On the very next play, West's quarterback would roll out to his left and complete a pass for another rare first down. They would run 6 more plays before the 3rd quarter would come to an end.

New Berlin was looking at a 2nd and 8 on their 44 to start the final quarter. They would run another play before looking at a 4th and 1 on Greendale's 49. You would expect the Viking's coaching staff to punt knowing that their offense was having some major problems but instead they would go for it. On the snap of the ball, Greendale's aggressive defense got a huge push and dropped the runner for no gain so Greendale would take over on downs on their 49-yard line.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Freshmen)It looked like Greendale finally had a drive going but on their 6th play, they would be called for an illegal block so they would be backed up 15 hard to get valuable yards. Now they were looking at a 2nd and 16. Two plays later, Wood would find Brad Lachman down field who caught the ball on New Berlin's 2-yard line. Greendale would have trouble getting any kind of forward moment going and soon found themselves looking at a 4th and goal from the 3. They would try a pass that fell to the ground but there was a flag as New Berlin was found guilty of pass interference. Greendale would catch a huge break for they would get a new set of downs from the 3-yard line. The Panther's were still having a major issue moving the ball forward. Three plays later, Wood would be tackled for a 5-yard loss so Greendale was now looking at a 4 and goal from the 10. With the run game not working, Greendale would attempt a pass, but Wood would get sacked for a 5-yard loss so the Vikings would dodge another bullet and take over on downs from their 15.

The Vikings would end up getting pushed backwards and eventually were looking at a 4th and 16 from their 9-yard line. They would line up for a punt and instead of kicking, the West coaching staff decided to have the punter run into the end zone and take the safety so that they would have more breathing room to get a kick off safely. This was a very unusual move with the score being so close because there still was still 1:20 left on the clock and if Greendale were to score a touchdown, they wouldn't even have to kick the extra point for they would already be leading.

Greendale at New Berlin West (Freshmen)As a result of the safety, New Berlin would get a free kick from their 20. They ended up punting the ball out of bounds which meant that Greendale would get the ball on New Berlin's 45. With 1:10 left on the clock, Greendale would be lining up for what could be their last attempt to win the game. On the very first play, however, Wood would end up throwing an interception squelching any chance of a come from behind win for the Panthers. All New Berlin had to do was down the ball a few times and the game would be over.

The final score would be New Berlin 7, Greendale 2. Even though both offenses were having trouble, New Berlin managed to make one play that resulted in a score while Greendale kept knocking on the door several times, but the door would never open.

The Panthers were to play St. Thomas More next week but More was unable to field a team so that game has been cancelled. The athletic department at Greendale is trying to put together another game with someone else but at the time of this article, that has not been accomplished yet. Stay tuned to this website for as soon as a game is scheduled, we will announce it here.

A Runaway Train!
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/23/11

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The term runaway train usually means a train that can't stop for some reason. It could be because there are no brakes, or because of the mass weight, the train is moving too fast, or maybe even the conductor fell asleep. Needless to say, it's a serious mater because there is no stopping it. That's kind of what New Berlin West's Varsity Reserve football team must have felt like because there was no stopping the Panther train Tuesday night. The only thing that did stop the Panthers was the scoreboard because when the clock stopped, the game stopped. The only lights left on the scoreboard where the ones that made a 70 for Greendale and a 0 for New Berlin West. This was without a doubt one of the most lopsided games that was ever played at Greendale's Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium.

This started off bad from the get go for New Berlin. By that I mean they couldn't even get to the game on time because the bus company they were contracted with forgot about them. Their coaches were making phone calls and eventually a bus did pick them up. When they did get to the game, it was already a half hour past the scheduled start time. That wasn't all that bad because the worst thing that would happen was that the Vikings would get a 15-yard penalty. Well, maybe that wasn't the worst thing that would happen.

Please bare with me here because this re-cap will seem kind of long and out of sorts.

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would be receiving first to start the game. Because of the 15-yard penalty, the Vikings would be kicking farther back then normal. As a result, the Panthers would be starting from the Viking's 47-yard line. On the very first play, Panther quarterback Josh Ringelberg would run an option play of which he would keep and ran 47-yards for the first touchdown of the game. Greendale's kicker John Fauser would make the point after try making the score 7-0 with 9:43 left in the 1st quarter.

The Vikings would begin their first drive of the night on their 15-yard line following the kick. They would only manage 9-yards before being forced to punt from their 24.

After fielding the kick with a running catch, Panther return specialist Jake Zywicki would return the kick 51-yards to pay dirt for Greendale's second touchdown of the afternoon. The point after try was good making the score 14-0 with 7:22 left in the opening quarter of play.

Following Fauser's kick, New Berlin would start from their 29-yard line. Again they failed to move the chains so they were forced to line up for a punt from their 27.

Ringelberg would bring out his Panther offense and start from their 46. Five plays later, Josh Ringelberg would pitch the ball to his brother Jack for a 14-yard touchdown run. The point after try was good making the score 21-0 with 5:13 left in the 1st quarter.

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Following the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings would start deep in a hole again on their 14-yard line. The Panther's defense was all over the them again forcing them to punt going 3 and out.

After the punt, Greendale would begin this drive from their 23. On the very first play, Ringelberg would see Panther receiver Dave Johnson streaking down the middle of the field and complete a pass for a nice 77-yard touchdown completion. Fauser's kick was true again increasing Greendale's lead by a score of 28-0 and 2:52 still left in the 1st quarter. At this point in the game, all 28 of Greendale's points were scored by freshmen.

The Vikings would set up on their 35 following the kick. On the second play from scrimmage, the Viking quarterback was running around to his left when Ryan Jarmes came up hard and popped the ball loose, which ended up falling right in the hands of Panther linebacker Parker Bychinski who took in from 32-yards for yet another Panther touchdown. The extra point try was good making the score a rather lopsided 35-0 with 1:58 left in the 1st quarter.

The Vikings who were still looking for their first 1st down of the game, would begin from their 30. The bad news for them was that they failed to get their 1st down but the good news was that the 1st quarter was almost over.

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)With :13 seconds still left in the 1st quarter, Greendale would begin their next drive from their 21. They would get off 1-play before the first quarter would finally come to an end.

To start the 2nd quarter, Jake Hagmayer would step in at quarterback. Four plays later, Hagmayer would hand the ball of to Jack Ringelberg who scampered 51-yards for another Panther score. This time the point after try was missed making the score 41-0 with 7:55 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Viking return guys weren't able to get to the ball on the kick so they would have to begin this drive from their 10-yard line. When it rains it pours for on New Berlin's third play, their quarterback slipped and fell in the end zone while rolling to his left, which enabled most of the Panther's defense to fall on him for a 2-point safety. The score would now read 43-0 with 6:18 left in the 1st half.

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)By rule, West would have to kick from their 20-yard line. The Panthers would end up with the ball at the midfield stripe for their next drive. It didn't take long for the Panther's to move the ball, as Zywicki would take off on a huge run down to the Vikings 9-yard line. Three plays later, Hagmayer would sneak it in from 3-yards out for Greendale's 7th touchdown of the game. The snap on the extra point try was mishandled so the score would now end up Greendale 49 - New Berlin 0 with 3:08 left in the first half.

Still looking for that elusive 1st down, New Berlin would start this drive from their 41. Again the Panther's defense was too much-pushing the Vikings back 10-yards and forcing them to punt once again.

After the kick, Greendale would be starting from New Berlin's 48. Three plays later, Hagmayer would pitch the ball to Jack Ringelberg again who ran around the right side and reached the end zone completing a 44-yard touchdown run. Fauser's kick was good blowing this game wide open by a score of 56-0 with :47 seconds left in the 1st half.

The Vikings would start their next drive from their 39. They would squeeze off 2-plays before the first half finally came to an end.

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)The rules would change a little bit to start the 2nd half. Because the Panthers were leading by more then 35-points, the clock would now continuously run. Greendale would be kicking to start the 2nd half.

After the return, West would begin from their 32. Low and behold, the Vikings completed a slant pass for their very first 1st down of the game. Their new found success would come to an abrupt end for 2-plays later, Bychinski would intercept a pass on West's 48 and return it all the way to the 5 where Greendale would take over first and goal.

Three plays later, Hagmayer would cross the goal line for another Panther score. The point after try was good making the score 63-0 with 4:58 left in the 3rd quarter.

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)Things started to really fall apart for West for on the kickoff, they would fumble and Josh Ringelberg would recover it for Greendale on West's 30-yard line. Nine plays later Josh Ringelberg would take it himself from 2-yards out for Greendale's 10th touchdown of the game. The point after try was good making the score 70-0 as the 3rd quarter came to an end.

The Panther's would be kicking first to start the final quarter. New Berlin would wind up starting from their 30-yard line. They ended up going the wrong direction again and were forced to punt as they were looking at a 4th and 20.

New Berlin West at Greendale (Varsity Reserve)After the punt, Greendale would set up shop on West's 35. They would put together 7-plays before turning the ball over on downs at New Berlin's 9-yard line.

West would run 6-plays before the running clock finally ran out.

The final score would be Greendale 70, New Berlin West 0. This was not a pretty game by any means and I'm sure that both teams were glad when it was over. The Panthers will be home again next Monday, as they will host the St Thomas More Cavilers. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30. That is of course the bus shows up.

All It Takes Is 1 To Get It Done!
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/20/11

Greendale at Franklin (Varsity Reserve)When you sit back and think about it, all sport competitions deal with numbers in some way, shape, or form. In some sports, you win having the lowest number such as in golf or racing. The majority of sports, however, are won by who scores the most points. Football is one of those sports. In fact, Greendale's Varsity Reserve football team was on the road and took advantage of that logic as they defeated the Franklin Sabers 7-6 in a lightening delayed Varsity Reserve game this past Saturday. There was some weather moving through the area and it was raining pretty much since the game began. There was also some thunder in the distances so the officials were keeping their eyes on the skies. Needless to say, there was one ground strike far away that one official saw and he wisely delayed the game and had the players and fans seek shelter.

Greendale at Franklin (Varsity Reserve)After the ensuing kick, Greendale would begin their drive from their 23. They were forced to punt, however, going 3 and out.

On the following Franklin possession, they would put 6-plays together before turning the ball over on down back to Greendale on Greendale's 24-yard line.

Greendale was in the middle of nice drive when the game was temporarily halted because of lightening with :48 seconds left on the game clock.

After a 45 minute delay, both teams would take to the field to warm up and then to pick up where they left off. The nice part now was that the rain has stopped and there was blue sky quickly approaching.

When the game resumed, Greendale was forced to punt after their 8th play.

Franklin would get the ball back and turn the ball over on downs on Greendale's 25 of which Greendale would now take over from.

Greendale at Franklin (Varsity Reserve)It was here that Panther quarterback Josh Ringelberg would orchestrate a 15-play scoring drive as he would complete a 9-yards pass in the end zone to Nate Miller who had to jump high in the air over a defender to get the ball. Greendale's Doug St. Onge would drill the point after try and the Panthers had a slim 1-point lead by a score of 7-6 and 1:15 left in the first half.

Franklin would take the ensuing kick and hook up 4-plays before having to punt from their 40.

Greendale would have time for only one play before the clock finally ran out to end the 1st half.

Greendale at Franklin (Varsity Reserve)Greendale would receive to start the 2nd half. After a nice return by St. Onge, the Panthers would start this drive from their 28 with a different quarterback in Jake Hagmayer. He failed to move the team far enough for a first down so they would have to punt the ball away going 3 and out.

Franklin would begin their next drive from their 20. They would run 2-plays before Joey Paul would intercept a pass for the Panthers in Franklin territory.

Unfortunately, The Panthers would end up turning the ball over on downs at the Saber 21-yard line.

Three plays into this Saber drive, they would fumble of Greendale would recover on Franklin's 35.

Greendale at Franklin (Varsity ReserveJosh Ringelberg was now back in at quarterback. He would help take his team on a 10-play drive deep into Saber territory before turning the ball over on downs at the Saber's 10.

Franklin would but 7-plays together and move the ball all the way down to Greendale's 18 before turning the ball over on downs with 8:20 now left in the game.

Greendale would now try to burn off as much of the clock as possible. They would put 7 plays together before throwing an interception to Franklin. It was now their ball 1 and 10 on their 37-yard line with 4:44 left in the game. It was looking like it would be up to the defense to hold on for the win.

Greendale at Franklin (Varsity ReserveWell the Panther "D" did that and forced Franklin to turn the ball over on downs with 3:02 left on the game clock. Greendale was now setup up their offense on their 42-yard line.

Ringelberg & company managed to hook together 6 more plays before having to punt. There were only :12 seconds left in the game.

Franklin would manage to get off a long pass play and were now sitting on their 30-yard line with .06 seconds left on the clock. They were down to what looked to be the last play of the game. Of course Murphy's Law would have to happen as Franklin ran another pass that was incomplete, but Greendale was called for defensive holding so Franklin would get one more crack with no time on the clock and the ball resting on Greendale's 40-yard line. After the snap of the ball, the Saber quarterback threw it as far as he could but it fell to the ground and the game was now officially over.

Greendale at Franklin (Varsity ReserveThe final score would be, Greendale 7, Franklin 6. Greendale will now need to rest up for in 3 days, they will be playing again as they will host the New Berlin West Vikings. The game is Tuesday and is scheduled to start at 5:30.

An Offensiveless Start!
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/19/11

Franklin at Greendale (varsity)ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The summer must be over because the 2011 high school season was about to begin. The Panthers were scheduled to play a non-conference home game against their neighbors to the south, Franklin, who is a member of the Southeast Conference. It was a beautiful night for a game, as everyone seemed anxious for football. In fact, there wasn't a seat left in the house as both communities would come out to not only watch a little football, but to support their respective teams. Both teams won their conferences last year but as a result of heavy graduation losses; they would both be out looking to see what they were packing for this year.

Greendale would open the 2011 season by receiving first. They would begin from their 20-yard line after the kicked sailed into the end zone. They didn't start off the way they were hoping as they were forced to punt going 3 and out.

After a nice punt by senior Brett Nethery, Franklin would start their first drive of the year from their 23. Three plays later, Greendale's Kennedy Ringelberg would intercept a pass on his 44 to give his offense another shot.

Again the Panthers couldn't get anything going and were forced to punt after 3-plays. This time Nethery got off a nice 49 yarder of which the ball rolled out at the Saber 2-yard line. Needless to say, Franklin will be starting from a very deep hole.

The Panther's defense, which was playing very well, forced the Sabers to punt from their own end zone. Ringelberg would make the catch and managed to get the ball to the Franklin 35 where Panther quarterback Sam Brick and the boys would start their next drive.

Franklin at Greendale (varsity)It was starting to seem like there were problems developing as the Panthers ended up turning the ball over on downs at the Saber's 27. Greendale was still looking for their first first down of the game.

Nine plays later, the Sabers finally hit pay dirt as they would run the ball in from 2-yards out. The try for the extra point was good making the score 7-0 Franklin, with 11:57 now left in the 2nd quarter.

After the ensuing kick and a nice return, the Panthers would begin their next drive from their 27. Things here really starting to go south for on the very first play, a mix-up occurred in the backfield as Brick threw a quick backwards pass that bounced off the face mask of an un-expecting Mike Scheidt and as a result of the pass being backwards, by rule, it was a free ball so with a gimmie bounce, a Franklin player would grab the ball and run 21-yards the other way for another Saber touchdown. The extra point try was good and just like that, the Panthers found themselves trailing by a score of 14-0 with 11:41 left in the 1st half.

The Panthers who were still looking for a first down, would start this drive from their 20. There finally looked to be a heartbeat as they hooked up 6-plays while picking up a couple of first downs along the way. But just like that, there would be a code blue, as Greendale's running back Mike Scheidt would fumble the ball ending the biggest drive of the day thus far for Greendale.

Franklin would set their offense up on their 41. They managed to put an 8-play drive together only to have it stall out on Greendale's 40-yard line. They had to kick that managed to roll into the end zone so Greendale would be forced to start from their 20 once again.

Franklin at Greendale (varsity)After a nice catch and run by Ringelberg, Scheidt would then take a stretch handoff around the left side and scamper 55-yards down the left sideline for the Panther's first score of the season. Nethery who also handles the extra point chores, would make the kick and Greendale was now down by a touchdown with a score of 14-7 and 3:03 left in the half.

The Sabers would start their next drive from their 20 after another Nethery kick made it into the end zone. They only managed 4-plays before they would have to punt back to the Panthers.

There was now 1:21 left on the clock and Greendale had the ball on their 34. They managed to string 9-plays together before the clock finally ran out to end the first half.

Greendale would kick first to start the 2nd half. Again Nethery reached the end zone forcing Franklin to start from their 20. The Panther's "D" who were holding up very well, forced the Sabers to punt after just 3-plays.

With the halftime adjustments in, the Panther's coaching staff was hoping that they could get the offense back on track, as they would begin this drive from their 37-yard line. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to work at this point as they were forced to punt after 3-plays.

Franklin would start their next drive from their 27. They would string 9-plays together before stalling out on Greendale's 37. Instead of going for it on 4th down, they decided to punt knowing that field position would be the key since both offenses were having trouble sustaining long drives.

Franklin at Greendale (varsity)After a rather poor punt, Greendale would take over on their 22. Three plays later, Brick would end up fumbling the ball giving it right back to the Sabers on Greendale's 44. It was looking like Greendale was their own worst enemy thus far.

The Saber cats ran 8-plays before being forced to settle for a 28-yard field goal attempt. The kick was good making the score 17-7 with 11:54 now left in the game.

The Panthers somewhat anemic offense would again attempt to get something going. They would be starting this drive from their 26 following the kick. They just couldn't get the car started again and were forced to punt the ball away.

After the kick, Franklin would begin this drive from their 37. Two plays later, something positive finally happened for the Panthers as the Sabers fumbled the ball of which Greendale would recover on the Saber’s 25-yard line. They couldn't reach the end zone, but they did split the uprights and Nethery kicked a 29-yard field goal that just barely made it over the crossbar. The score was now Franklin 17, Greendale 10, with 8:09 left in the game.

Franklin at Greendale (varsity)Greendale's specialty teams were doing an outstanding job as they covered the ensuing kick and made the tackle on the Saber's 21. Franklin would squeeze off 6-plays before being forced to punt once again.

Greendale ended up deep in a hole as a result of that kick forcing them to start from their 3-yard line. They rattled off 6-plays before having to line up for another punt.

It was here that one of the few highlights would occur. While standing on his own 20, Nethery would take the snap and boot a perfect spiral that traveled 77 yards with a roll and almost stopped on Franklin's 1 yard line, but the ball just crossed the goal line at the end so Franklin dodged a bullet and were able to begin their drive from the 20 instead.

Franklin at Greendale (varsity)At this point, there was only 3:42 left on the clock so Greendale needed to make a stop if they wanted any chance to at least tie if not win the game. After moving 60-yards in 7-plays and taking a lot of clock with them, Franklin was now in a position to line up in the infamous victory formation because Greendale was out of time outs. This formation is used by everyone and is probably the safest play in the playbook. Its purpose is to just start the clock so that it can run out. All that happens is the center snaps the ball to the quarterback and then the quarterback who is usually surrounded by 3 or 4 other players forming a safety net, kneels down and the play is over. I have been around football for 35 years and what happened next was a first. After running two kneel down plays prior, Franklin would need one more to end the game. On the snap of the ball, the quarterback somehow mishandled the ball and fumbled of which Greendale recovered. The only problem now was that there was only :31 seconds still left on the clock and they were out of time outs.

Franklin at Greendale (varsity):31 seconds is plenty of time for the style of offense Greendale plays, but it would be a mater of executing it in order to get the results they needed. Well the execution needed was not there as all 4 passing attempts missed their marks and Greendale was forced to give the ball up to Franklin with :09 seconds left in the game. They managed to run the victory play one more time without incident and the game finally came to an end.

The final score would be, Franklin 17, Greendale 10. This isn't the end of the world by any means as this was only a non-conference game. There have been seasons in the past where this happened of which Greendale would then run the table in conference play. We'll find out next week as the Panthers will begin conference play against the New Berlin West Vikings. They will be playing on the road at New Berlin, which will start at 7:00pm. The Vikings are coming off a major beating as they lost 43-0 to cross-town rivals New Berlin Eisenhower.

Greendale Village Days!
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/15/11

2001 Greendale Village Days!Every year, the Village of Greendale puts on a community wide celebration of which anyone and everyone can attend. There are rummage sales, games, various areas for entertainment, friendly competitions, good music, good food, and of course the parade. This 3 day event is usually the second weekend in August every year. It's just a fun way for everyone to get out of the house and mix it up with friends, family, and neighbors.

On Sunday, there was the big parade that draws everyone down to the curbs of beautiful downtown Greendale. It is here where they can enjoy all sorts of different things that may tickle their fancy. This year, the GPTC wanted to spread the word of their existence so they entered a rather hot looking car that was driven by one of the hottest looking coaches in the area. Greendale's own Rob Stoltz who was accompanied by his oldest daughter Ellery. Following the car were members of this year's football team. They walked behind tossing candy to anxious customers young and old a like.

2001 Greendale Village Days! The GPTC has been doing their little thing to raise money too. They host a dunk tank fundraiser booth so that they can gather some funds for various items that will help out the high school football teams in some way, shape, or form. Of course the best job is staying dry behind the table and collecting the money. The worst job is sitting on the plank above a tub of ice cold water-waiting for some lucky sadistic soul to hit the target with a softball and drop you into the water. They will laugh and high five their friends while you are trying to fight off the sudden body shock. While the actual temperature wasn't known, it was estimated that the water was at the mid to upper 40 degree mark. That's enough to cause several physical reactions in one's body. I won't get into too many details but just imagine shivering uncontrollable for an hour or so.

As like in the past, a lot of the dunkies are football players. They are either asked or volunteer to sit the bench for 1/2 hour and sometimes an hour shift. They all said the same thing. The best part of doing that is climbing down-knowing that you won't be getting wet and cold anymore. They do know, however, that it is a way that they can help give back to what the Touchdown Club does for them.

2001 Greendale Village Days! There are also a few other special guest as well. Probably the most infamous one is the Panther Head Coach himself, Rob Stoltz. As you can imagine, the players just look forward to him sitting the bench because this is really the only way they can get a free shot at him and not have to deal with any consequences.  So they hope anyway!

A lot of special people who are members of the GPTC volunteered to help out during the 3 day ordeal. Many thanks to every one that helped out and a special thanks to those individuals who were willing to sacrifice their bodies to help earn money for the club. Hopefully those brave souls have finally stopped shivering by now.

The weekend was a success none-the-less and now it's time to buckle down because this Friday, the Panthers will have to buckle up to do battle with cross-town foe Franklin. The game will start at 7:00pm at Greendale's Stephen J. Gavinski Memorial Stadium.

Practice Has "NOW" Officially Begun!
R. A. Mattrisch - 8/5/11

First days of practice at Carroll College. The 2011 high school has now officially begun. Not just here in Greendale, but throughout the entire state of Wisconsin. The one thing different about this year is that the entire football season has been moved up a week so instead of having 3 weeks to get ready, there will be only 2 weeks and then the first games begin. "We're not worried about that at all here." said Head Coach Rob Stoltz. "We made use of some creative ways to get some practice time in during the off season, plus the guys come back from last year with a general working knowledge of our system, which is a huge thing for us. We can just dive in-get the personnel set, and get out timing down." Other schools may find themselves in a pickle if they didn't do something similar because 2 weeks is not a very long time to get an entire football team ready for a season.

First days of practice at Carroll College. For the last several years, the Panther coaches have taken their team out to Carroll College in Waukesha for a very intensive training camp. They hold a series of practices all day long for 2 days while taking breaks for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the college's main dinning hall. "We like to do this for several reasons," Stoltz explains. "It get's the guys out of the house and away from distractions so that they can concentrate of football, it helps build team unity, and it gives them an early taste of what it's like living on a college campus."

The weather for this year was much more tolerable compared to the 90+ degree heat from last year. Last year there was no air-conditioning in the rooms either so the players and coaches were pleasantly surprised this year when they found out that the buildings that they were staying in were air-conditioned.

First days of practice at Carroll College. The team practices on Carroll College's main football field. They also have access to the locker room and the training room. They will finish their two day event and then get back on the bus and head back home before the weekend. Come Monday, they will pick up right where they left off only on their field. They have all of this week to tweak things in before they head down to Kenosha Tremper for a quad-team scrimmage. This will be the last full contact test before they begin their regular season the following Friday night when they host the Franklin Sabers.

3rd Annual Greendale Passing Tournament
R. A. Mattrisch - 7/23/11

3rd Annual GHS 7 on 7 Passing TournamentThis past Saturday, Greendale High School in conjunction with the Touchdown Club hosted their 3rd annual passing tournament that was held at Stephen J Gavinski Memorial Stadium.  This all day 7 on 7 affair included seven teams from the area. They included, Brookfield East, Racine Horlick, Racine Park, Cedarburg, Pius, Westfield, and of course Greendale.

This event puts 7 offensive players from one team against 7 players from another team and the object of the game is simple. The offense has to try and score from 40 yards out while the defense has to prevent them from scoring. The offense only gets 1 first down at the 20 yard line and must pass only. If they score they get 7 points. If the defense stops them on downs or by way of an interception, they would get 3 points. Each game would be divided into two 15-minute halves. One team will be on offense the first half and then they are on defense the second half.

The tournament starts out by everyone playing each other once. Their overall record will the determine how they are seated for the final single elimination bracket. After all of the dust settled and the last drop of sweat fell to the turf, Racine Park ended up winning in the final game against Cedarburg.

Offseason Clinic Begins!
R. A. Mattrisch - 7/21/11

2011 Offseason clinic. The 2011 season has sort-a-kind-a begun with a summer clinic put on by the Panther coaching staff on Greendale's turf field. This clinic is the first step in knocking off the dust and and to get the players ready for the up and coming season.  70 players fought through the 90+ degree heat as they were taught some basic fundamental drills and were shown plays needed to run Greendale's highly sophisticated spread offense.

"We have been doing this for several years now," said Head Coach Rob Stoltz. "There is just so much work and so many questions that need to be answered and taken care of. This just helps us as a coaching staff to start roughing things in for when the season begins."

Greendale will hold a few more practices like this before the season officially begins on August 3rd. The Panthers will practice the rest of that week and then the following week before heading down to Kenosha Tremper for their annual 4 team scrimmage on August 13th. Then their season begins as they will host cross-town power house Franklin for the season opener on August 19th.
